MIDNIGHT REWIND: Akira (1988)

"The future is not a straight line. It is filled with many crossroads. There must be a future that we can choose for ourselves." πŸ’Š

It is time for our third installment in our Midnight Rewind segment! This week, we are discussing possibly the greatest anime of all-time: Katsuhiro Ôtomo's 1988 masterpiece Akira!

The year is 2019. 31 years after being destroyed during World War III on July 16th, 1988, Tokyo (now 'Neo-Tokyo') has been rebuilt and is a thriving metropolis.

Shōtarō Kaneda is the leader of a biker gang. His friend Tetsuo is injured in an accident and taken to a top-secret government facility. After developing uncontrollable telekinetic powers, Tetsuo turns against his friends and the city.

00:00:00.363 --> 00:00:07.650
Hey everyone, this is Jennifer Hale and you're listening to the number one show on the Citadel, the Oblivion Bar podcast.

00:00:07.892 --> 00:00:08.993
I should go.

00:00:13.304 --> 00:00:20.501
Welcome to the Oblivion Bar podcast with your host Chris and Aaron Noles.

00:00:36.590 --> 00:00:40.182
Hello everyone and welcome to episode 185 of the Oblivion Bar podcast.

00:00:40.182 --> 00:00:42.914
I'm your 60 year old man with telekinetic powers, Chris Hacker.

00:00:42.914 --> 00:00:48.427
And joining me is the leader of the American capsule bike gang charter, my cohost and BFF Aaron Oles.

00:00:48.427 --> 00:00:51.493
You could at least tell me your name, you cold bitch.

00:00:52.747 --> 00:00:54.790
Welcome everybody back to the Oblivion Bar podcast.

00:00:54.790 --> 00:00:59.027
We are doing our third installment in the Midnight Rewind segment.

00:00:59.027 --> 00:01:02.191
This is of course our celebration of all things anime.

00:01:02.191 --> 00:01:09.498
And this week, Aaron, we are talking about possibly, probably, I think the greatest anime of all time.

00:01:13.612 --> 00:01:15.418
1988 Akira.

00:01:15.418 --> 00:01:17.569
first of all, I guess I should say we're dumb Americans everybody.

00:01:17.569 --> 00:01:20.222
Is Akira how we're supposed to say it?

00:01:20.463 --> 00:01:21.204
Akira.

00:01:21.204 --> 00:01:21.965
Akira?

00:01:21.965 --> 00:01:22.757
Akira.

00:01:22.757 --> 00:01:25.600
See that's just too, that's too fluent for my tongue.

00:01:25.600 --> 00:01:29.126
It feels, it feels like a little too like I'm moving my tongue too much.

00:01:29.126 --> 00:01:30.016
Akira.

00:01:30.016 --> 00:01:31.378
I can't say it like that.

00:01:31.715 --> 00:01:32.656
No comment.

00:01:32.974 --> 00:01:35.337
Because I, again, I'm a dumb American.

00:01:35.337 --> 00:01:37.165
I've officially just leaned into it.

00:01:37.165 --> 00:01:37.996
full blown weeb.

00:01:37.996 --> 00:01:45.237
that's, that's, have, have no, no like dignity left to try and save.

00:01:45.237 --> 00:01:53.769
So I'm a full blown weeb and I will do my best to, pronounce these things as closely as possible without sounding like a complete douchebag.

00:01:53.805 --> 00:01:55.305
I'm sure the listeners appreciate it.

00:01:55.305 --> 00:01:57.025
I definitely appreciate it.

00:01:57.025 --> 00:02:00.385
You are the subject matter we've of the show.

00:02:00.385 --> 00:02:04.525
So we appreciate the fact that you're willing to take that sacrifice for us.

00:02:04.525 --> 00:02:12.306
And again, I think part of the reason I just want to speak briefly about sort of Minaret Rewind and why we decided to do it is sort of a twofold.

00:02:13.406 --> 00:02:22.086
Aaron pointed out many times throughout the history or the beginning history of the podcast that we did not really focus on anime, even though I think we both sort of liked it.

00:02:22.099 --> 00:02:22.849
I sort of liked it.

00:02:22.849 --> 00:02:24.390
You've always loved it.

00:02:24.610 --> 00:02:33.593
But it gave us not only an excuse to talk about anime, but it also gave me specifically an opportunity to learn more about not only anime, but also manga.

00:02:33.593 --> 00:02:41.735
since we started Minet Rewind, I've even started to read manga like you have without, without being prompted, without studying.

00:02:41.735 --> 00:02:45.516
Like free ren is one of my favorite mangas currently going on volume five.

00:02:45.516 --> 00:02:48.617
I read up to volume three of Akira.

00:02:48.899 --> 00:02:52.401
So like I'm just sort of doing this on my own because it is an incredible art form.

00:02:52.401 --> 00:02:54.943
So Aaron, I appreciate you for that.

00:02:54.943 --> 00:03:09.478
One thing that you don't really realize, you especially coming into this podcasting industry is how many, I mean, we all know that the comic book industry, the nerd industry, it just filled with a plethora of nerds and sub genres.

00:03:09.737 --> 00:03:26.175
And when those two, when multiple genres start co-mingling, and I'm going to name drop Daniel Warren Johnson, I'm going to name drop Christian Ward, like when we do these interviews, because unfortunately some of the interviews, our audience doesn't get to see.

00:03:26.575 --> 00:03:37.241
one of the coolest things about doing this show is when we see some of our favorite artists when we're doing these interviews and in the background and in their office, you can kind of get a little bit of a peek behind the curtain of who they are.

00:03:37.443 --> 00:03:43.516
And when they have like, there's this very specific Akira anniversary collection of all of the manga.

00:03:43.516 --> 00:03:47.090
And when they all have it in the background, you're like, I have that too.

00:03:47.090 --> 00:04:03.640
know, like that makes you feel so much more connected and so much more aware of Like what goes into this, you know, this just being a nerd and the fact that we all share so much connectivity and so much connective tissue between the lines.

00:04:03.640 --> 00:04:05.102
It's amazing.

00:04:05.102 --> 00:04:06.942
Yeah, it seems silly to put up those walls, right?

00:04:06.942 --> 00:04:08.581
I mean, I see it sometimes in comics too.

00:04:08.581 --> 00:04:10.042
We're like, well, I only read Marvel.

00:04:10.042 --> 00:04:10.961
I only read DC.

00:04:10.961 --> 00:04:11.981
I only read small press.

00:04:11.981 --> 00:04:13.301
I only read love and rockets.

00:04:13.301 --> 00:04:14.042
That's so silly.

00:04:14.042 --> 00:04:16.541
We can enjoy all of these things separately or together.

00:04:16.541 --> 00:04:17.201
It's fine.

00:04:17.201 --> 00:04:18.422
It's not a big deal.

00:04:18.422 --> 00:04:21.221
that's rule number one here.

00:04:21.221 --> 00:04:23.302
It's tip your bartenders 20 % or more.

00:04:23.302 --> 00:04:24.841
Don't yuck anyone's yum.

00:04:24.841 --> 00:04:26.362
And Aaron always gets off first.

00:04:26.362 --> 00:04:28.081
That's our three main rules of the podcast.

00:04:28.081 --> 00:04:29.134
That's it.

00:04:29.134 --> 00:04:31.021
I think I highlight muscle mommies.

00:04:32.461 --> 00:04:32.742
All right.

00:04:32.742 --> 00:04:40.036
Well, Aaron, before we get into our midnight rewind of Akira, can you please tell the listeners how they can support the Oblivion Bar podcast?

00:04:41.800 --> 00:04:42.867
Absolutely.

00:04:42.867 --> 00:05:14.428
Absolutely absolutely friggin lately If you want to support the oblivion bar podcast, there's multiple ways that you can do this You can consider checking out our patreon for your support you get access to bonus episodes each week called the grid grid grid a Behind-the-scenes look at how we prepare each episode with episode transcripts, which is basically like a study guide to the episode I love them because if there's study guide for us, but also since we release them before the actual episodes come out You can go and do some homework and kind of keep up with us and even argue with us if you want to, which we love.

00:05:14.428 --> 00:05:22.617
Fuckin have a conversation, This one is definitely one that you want to check out this as we get into this minute rewind, it is long winded.

00:05:22.617 --> 00:05:27.233
So please take a look at it so that my work doesn't feel like only Aaron and get to see it.

00:05:27.865 --> 00:05:32.646
There's also a whole bunch of other exclusive goodies like, you know, Patreon polls as well.

00:05:32.646 --> 00:05:37.065
We give out exclusive nicknames to people that have been a Patreon member for so long.

00:05:37.185 --> 00:05:50.725
know, the other thing that's really cool and Chris just recently did this, we had some some of our our Patreon members start posting about it is he sends out he sends out every once in a while, just whenever he has a plethora of things just to give away, he will send out.

00:05:50.725 --> 00:05:52.526
Yeah, it's from us.

00:05:53.069 --> 00:06:01.509
So what I need to start doing is bringing you like a whole bunch of stuff to take home when we make a ton of stickers like I have a ton of stickers, cards, everything.

00:06:01.509 --> 00:06:05.850
Anyways, he just packages this stuff up and sends it to all of our Patreon listeners.

00:06:05.850 --> 00:06:12.970
And it's so amazing because we love it when you guys post about it and show us what you got, because a lot of times it's completely randomized.

00:06:12.970 --> 00:06:14.610
So somebody may get something.

00:06:14.610 --> 00:06:16.870
Somebody may get something else, you know, I don't know.

00:06:16.870 --> 00:06:17.649
Or Chris doesn't know.

00:06:17.649 --> 00:06:19.790
It's just so much fun.

00:06:20.127 --> 00:06:20.718
Not just that.

00:06:20.718 --> 00:06:26.406
You can also give the Patreon a seven day free trial just by going to patreon.com forward slash oblivion bar pod.

00:06:26.406 --> 00:06:27.817
Check it out the link in our show notes.

00:06:27.817 --> 00:06:33.894
And that's not the only way to support the show, but you can also drop us, you know, five stars or review on your favorite podcasting platform.

00:06:33.894 --> 00:06:34.774
You can talk about us.

00:06:34.774 --> 00:06:35.757
You can share us.

00:06:35.757 --> 00:06:37.899
You don't have to put money in just to be supportive.

00:06:37.899 --> 00:06:40.161
We appreciate every little thing.

00:06:41.026 --> 00:06:48.470
will echo all of that and I will end it there Aaron, because we need to get into our, again, very long discussion of Akira.

00:06:48.470 --> 00:06:52.466
So let's go ahead and get into this next midnight rewind segment.

00:07:04.353 --> 00:07:20.798
This whole planet's suffering! like this for anything in the world.

00:07:49.240 --> 00:07:57.526
Alrighty, here we are into our next midnight rewind segment.

00:07:57.526 --> 00:08:01.940
Aaron, I love that intro music and you heard it everybody.

00:08:01.940 --> 00:08:14.838
are here talking about Akira, also I thought this thought, Aaron, while we're sort of discussing the do to do this movie, to do this anime again, one of the greatest animes of all time.

00:08:14.838 --> 00:08:20.189
not only one of the greatest animas, I would argue maybe one of the greatest movies of all time, just in general.

00:08:20.189 --> 00:08:22.415
kind of feels like we're blowing our load a little early, right?

00:08:22.415 --> 00:08:25.812
Like this is the third midnight rewind and we're already doing Akira.

00:08:26.298 --> 00:08:27.598
No, no, no.

00:08:27.598 --> 00:08:30.180
If anything, like this is the perfect time, you know.

00:08:30.180 --> 00:08:30.490
Sure.

00:08:30.490 --> 00:08:32.240
I think that, you know, great things come in three.

00:08:32.240 --> 00:08:35.822
We've covered two very amazing ones so far.

00:08:35.883 --> 00:08:45.466
We'll talk about those in a second, but I feel like third is a great place to have just this segment for Akira.

00:08:45.486 --> 00:08:46.076
know, it's.

00:08:46.076 --> 00:08:50.038
Yeah, this is and there's so much more out there.

00:08:50.038 --> 00:08:51.750
Yes, this is one of the greatest.

00:08:51.750 --> 00:08:53.090
Is it the greatest?

00:08:53.090 --> 00:09:00.509
That will be discussion for future iterations of this show, but like there's still some amazing ones out there.

00:09:00.509 --> 00:09:03.743
And the other thing is with Midnight Rewind, it doesn't just have to be movies.

00:09:03.743 --> 00:09:05.424
It can also be shows as well.

00:09:05.424 --> 00:09:08.447
can, you know, it's the world is our oyster.

00:09:08.447 --> 00:09:13.373
country, the Eastern animation is our oyster.

00:09:13.389 --> 00:09:14.529
That's true.

00:09:14.529 --> 00:09:21.990
Now, if this is your first time listening to our midnight rewind segment, again, Aaron just sort of hinted at a moment ago, episode 143.

00:09:21.990 --> 00:09:22.990
I think that was last year.

00:09:22.990 --> 00:09:25.389
We discussed Princess Mononoke as our very first entry.

00:09:25.389 --> 00:09:35.429
And then also last year in the later part of the year, we talked about the psychological thriller and the blueprint for Christopher Nolan's inception.

00:09:35.429 --> 00:09:38.009
2006 is Paprika for episode 160.

00:09:38.190 --> 00:09:39.638
One of best soundtracks ever.

00:09:39.638 --> 00:09:40.599
one of the best soundtracks ever.

00:09:40.599 --> 00:09:41.889
it's not even it's like people.

00:09:41.889 --> 00:09:42.879
What's the weird?

00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:44.280
Remember the weird.

00:09:44.697 --> 00:09:50.004
so yeah, again, everyone, it's a it's a fun segment.

00:09:50.004 --> 00:09:51.655
We talked a little bit again in the beginning of the show.

00:09:51.655 --> 00:09:58.671
But I think the main thing that you should really take away from this is that Aaron and I are not here to review this.

00:09:58.671 --> 00:10:00.511
These movies are these shows or whatever.

00:10:00.511 --> 00:10:02.202
Like this is a total celebration.

00:10:02.202 --> 00:10:03.013
Yeah.

00:10:03.673 --> 00:10:04.423
Right.

00:10:04.501 --> 00:10:05.892
We may critique things here and there.

00:10:05.892 --> 00:10:12.868
I don't think there's really much to critique with our first three entries, to be honest, when it comes to Princess Mononoke, Paprika and now Akira.

00:10:12.868 --> 00:10:17.552
It's hard to critique these because most of these are some of the greatest animes of all time.

00:10:17.552 --> 00:10:31.714
I do have one small critique that we'll get into later here with Akira, but I do think that like down the road, when we start experimenting with this segment and doing more maybe personal favorites or ones that are just an interesting, you know, film or television series to talk about.

00:10:31.714 --> 00:10:42.131
We will offer critiques, I think in reality and sort of the main goal of all this is to just celebrate, you know, the Japan animation movement where Aaron and I were when we saw these movies for the first time.

00:10:42.383 --> 00:10:45.686
cause again, we grew up in the era where this was not all readily available.

00:10:45.686 --> 00:10:47.287
Crunchy roll wasn't really a thing.

00:10:47.287 --> 00:10:51.831
Funimation was a thing, but it didn't have like the reach that it has now.

00:10:51.870 --> 00:11:02.296
And it's because, shameless brag here, our generation demanded this that now everyone, I mean, again, you could argue that anime is the largest and most successful it's ever been.

00:11:02.296 --> 00:11:14.755
We were the era and you know, I wouldn't want to take all the credit, like really those born in the seventies and the eighties and, you know, early nineties as well, cause I have to include you.

00:11:15.817 --> 00:11:34.186
We really are the ones that really brought a lot of this, these like Japanese, like I don't want to say fandoms, but titles franchise to the United States because with, with the power of becoming like of being able to import things, you know, to be able to order internationally.

00:11:34.186 --> 00:11:53.306
And that includes, you know, the anime movement people, people before dubbing in a lot of video games and a lot of movies and such from, from overseas, people went out of their way to learn things like Japanese in order to play like PlayStation games that were only in like only released in Japan.

00:11:53.306 --> 00:11:56.813
Some of these Dragon Ball Z games that I owned for like the dream cast.

00:11:56.813 --> 00:11:57.313
whatever.

00:11:57.313 --> 00:11:58.933
They were only in Japanese.

00:11:58.933 --> 00:12:01.833
had no idea what their names were, who they like, what they said.

00:12:01.833 --> 00:12:16.278
I just know that that, you know, super saiyan for Goku fighting on, you know, in this Dragon Ball GT game was insane, you know, and, it was a It was a lot of the like side scroll or not side scrollers like the Mortal Kombat style like arcade fighting games.

00:12:16.278 --> 00:12:22.993
Yeah, I had a couple those as well like Marvel versus Capcom like before, imagine that just being full, full anime characters.

00:12:22.993 --> 00:12:24.894
And it was just an amazing time.

00:12:24.894 --> 00:12:39.081
Again, being able to import these things and unfortunately without having, you know, subtitles for a lot of it or dubbing, it just, it just wasn't there, but it was still, it still created this, this subculture, the sub fandom that was just so amazing.

00:12:39.081 --> 00:12:41.374
And again, like you said, Chris, none of it was on demand.

00:12:41.374 --> 00:12:45.485
You know, when it started finally being popular, it was maybe midnight.

00:12:45.485 --> 00:12:49.485
on like a Saturday night or a Friday night on the sci-fi channel.

00:12:49.485 --> 00:12:50.826
And that was it.

00:12:50.826 --> 00:13:05.645
Like that was the only time that you could get, you could stay up if your parents let you, if your dad let you, if your mom let you to watch these, oh my God, just pushing every limit of, you know, obscenity and sensors on, you know, on TV.

00:13:05.645 --> 00:13:06.385
And it was insane.

00:13:06.385 --> 00:13:13.926
I remember seeing some of my first like anime boobs watching a vampire hunter D on, on a sci-fi channel.

00:13:13.926 --> 00:13:14.750
was insane.

00:13:14.750 --> 00:13:16.913
Next on the SciPie Channel.

00:13:16.913 --> 00:13:19.477
It's a dramatic form of animation.

00:13:19.639 --> 00:13:23.676
Subject and material may be graphic and provocative at times.

00:13:25.238 --> 00:13:29.285
It's a stark place and a desperate time.

00:13:29.808 --> 00:13:33.897
A brave young girl and a hunter for hire.

00:13:38.125 --> 00:13:41.076
fierce battle for her life.

00:13:42.658 --> 00:13:47.249
his name and a world ravaged by mutants and demons.

00:13:47.311 --> 00:13:49.254
Vampire Hunter 3, next.

00:13:53.662 --> 00:13:55.974
We get a pair of anime boobs in this one as well.

00:13:55.974 --> 00:13:57.184
We'll talk about those here in a bit.

00:13:57.184 --> 00:14:02.307
But I will say that like speaking from a 90s baby perspective, it was syndication for me.

00:14:02.307 --> 00:14:05.830
It was tsunami and Cartoon Network and a little bit of sci-fi.

00:14:05.830 --> 00:14:08.351
And I've talked about that some previous midnight rewinds.

00:14:08.351 --> 00:14:14.515
Anime and manga felt sort of taboo a little bit growing up in the Midwest here in America.

00:14:14.515 --> 00:14:15.356
Like, yeah.

00:14:15.356 --> 00:14:18.938
And part of that taboo-ness came from the fact that it wasn't readily available.

00:14:18.938 --> 00:14:20.720
You had to stay up till midnight to watch it.

00:14:20.720 --> 00:14:30.315
If you just so happen to wake up from like a early you know, nap or something and you're on sci fi channel and it's, you know, one or two in the morning and you've got ghosts in a shell plan.

00:14:30.315 --> 00:14:32.496
You're like, I've never seen anything like this before.

00:14:32.496 --> 00:14:33.277
Right.

00:14:33.277 --> 00:14:43.591
So I had that thought in my head for a while, but again, as we've gotten further and further into our culture and we say this every single time, and think it's worth reiterating when you go to New York comic con, you don't see a Batman.

00:14:43.591 --> 00:14:45.772
You see a giant Goku and giant Luffy.

00:14:45.772 --> 00:14:46.508
All right.

00:14:46.508 --> 00:14:47.078
Yeah.

00:14:47.078 --> 00:14:47.399
Yeah.

00:14:47.399 --> 00:14:52.162
You, you see these like Akira Toriyama like style.

00:14:52.682 --> 00:14:58.138
I think it was like last year was this sand sand something game that just recently came out too long ago.

00:14:58.138 --> 00:14:58.638
Yeah.

00:14:58.638 --> 00:14:58.938
Yeah.

00:14:58.938 --> 00:15:10.607
It's like, it's this style has become so, synonymous with anime, with Dragon Ball, which with video game, there's so many different video games now that are just based, like, what was it?

00:15:10.607 --> 00:15:11.739
What is it called?

00:15:12.299 --> 00:15:18.653
it's like, like the guy who like, like farms like goo and you know, it's yeah.

00:15:19.953 --> 00:15:20.374
Yeah.

00:15:20.374 --> 00:15:20.433
Yeah.

00:15:20.433 --> 00:15:23.774
It's you know, it's these fun little like your dragon quest.

00:15:23.774 --> 00:15:24.114
Thank you.

00:15:24.114 --> 00:15:24.614
Perfect.

00:15:24.614 --> 00:15:26.394
There's like all these certain ones.

00:15:26.394 --> 00:15:32.193
One of my favorite games ever that has not made a reappearance since the Xbox 360 was called blue dragon.

00:15:32.193 --> 00:15:41.374
It was very that same style and yeah, it's so insane how again, you said it best.

00:15:41.374 --> 00:15:43.557
It was almost taboo.

00:15:43.662 --> 00:15:46.721
at a certain time because it was such a nerdy thing to enjoy.

00:15:46.721 --> 00:15:52.280
was such a weird, like small thing, but like everybody, I don't give a fuck.

00:15:52.682 --> 00:15:57.341
So many people secretly loved watching Toonami and everything it had to offer.

00:15:57.341 --> 00:16:02.101
That's why it's so popular now, but it used to be such a hidden thing.

00:16:02.101 --> 00:16:03.481
used to be such a thing like, oh, don't watch it.

00:16:03.481 --> 00:16:04.761
Fucking anime isn't for nerds.

00:16:04.761 --> 00:16:07.662
know, man, yeah, yeah.

00:16:07.662 --> 00:16:11.758
I'll tell you, like I talked, I reached out to my, my, you know, one of my oldest.

00:16:11.758 --> 00:16:15.918
Best friends, Constantine, who I met in high school.

00:16:15.918 --> 00:16:18.577
We always tell the story like we met, like he was riding bikes.

00:16:18.577 --> 00:16:19.278
I was riding bikes.

00:16:19.278 --> 00:16:20.577
I was like, man, you we talked.

00:16:20.577 --> 00:16:22.097
was like, hey, you want to go ride bikes together?

00:16:22.097 --> 00:16:23.018
I was like, fuck yeah.

00:16:23.018 --> 00:16:24.857
So we became friends.

00:16:24.878 --> 00:16:26.957
He introduced me as friends.

00:16:26.957 --> 00:16:30.498
He became like, became my anime guru.

00:16:30.498 --> 00:16:32.278
He introduced me to Evangelion.

00:16:32.278 --> 00:16:37.326
He introduced me to everything that Dragon Ball was and could have been.

00:16:37.326 --> 00:16:38.797
and like so much more.

00:16:38.797 --> 00:16:41.059
Like he had like the try gun statues.

00:16:41.059 --> 00:16:44.592
He had the characters and I was like, this is so fucking cool.

00:16:44.592 --> 00:16:45.624
And so I'm so lucky.

00:16:45.624 --> 00:16:48.437
So I reached out to him for a statement about a cure, which I'll read later on.

00:16:48.437 --> 00:16:52.660
And I just think this is such a good way to reach so many more people, you know?

00:16:52.660 --> 00:16:54.433
Sorry, I know I'm going off on tangents here.

00:16:54.433 --> 00:16:55.224
No, no, it's okay.

00:16:55.224 --> 00:16:58.225
Cause it sort of leads me into my relationship to anime as well.

00:16:58.225 --> 00:16:59.676
We'll get into Akira here as well.

00:16:59.676 --> 00:17:01.116
I'll tie it all together.

00:17:01.116 --> 00:17:02.907
Again, growing up, I liked Pokemon.

00:17:02.907 --> 00:17:03.697
I liked Dragon Ball Z.

00:17:03.697 --> 00:17:11.520
I liked Yu-Gi-Oh, but I still just didn't fully embrace it until probably my early twenties, I would say, when I met you in the army.

00:17:11.520 --> 00:17:14.662
And I, I'm almost positive, Aaron, you can tell me if you remember this or not.

00:17:14.662 --> 00:17:16.952
I'm almost positive that I saw this movie for the first time with you.

00:17:16.952 --> 00:17:17.803
Yeah.

00:17:17.803 --> 00:17:18.413
Okay.

00:17:18.413 --> 00:17:19.493
I thought that was correct.

00:17:19.493 --> 00:17:21.434
And I remember it blowing me away.

00:17:21.434 --> 00:17:34.296
Akira to me, kind of feels like that movie that I've only finished maybe I've seen it 10 times, but I finished it four times, you know, for whatever reason, I don't know why I like watching rewatching it for this rewind watching the ending.

00:17:34.296 --> 00:17:36.593
I'm like, wow, I feel like I've only seen this maybe once or twice before.

00:17:36.593 --> 00:17:37.512
Right.

00:17:37.554 --> 00:17:39.105
And I've read the manga, you've read the manga.

00:17:39.105 --> 00:17:40.746
We'll talk about the differences here in just a bit.

00:17:40.746 --> 00:17:49.500
But I curious, one of those movies that it feels like there's a big gap in the middle missing, like the opening is incredibly strong.

00:17:49.500 --> 00:17:56.680
The ending is super pervasive, but the middle There's something, and again, we'll talk about it as we get through this thing.

00:17:56.839 --> 00:18:05.443
before we get into that, and before we get into the summary here, Aaron, I want to ask you, when it comes to Akira, can you remember where you saw it for the first time, how you saw it?

00:18:05.443 --> 00:18:06.444
What was the setting?

00:18:06.444 --> 00:18:07.615
What's your preferred version?

00:18:07.615 --> 00:18:09.250
Give me all the things.

00:18:09.250 --> 00:18:14.714
the audience can't see this, but I'm wearing this Akira shirt that I've actually had for longer than we've been friends.

00:18:14.714 --> 00:18:17.126
I got this from a thrift store.

00:18:17.126 --> 00:18:25.753
actually got this and the same one in like a bigger or possibly a smaller size when I was in high school, going to a thrift shop and I was like, holy shit, this is cool.

00:18:25.753 --> 00:18:33.430
So it's got, it's got a Canada and it's got the clown bike gang leader, like just like squaring off over the Akira logo.

00:18:33.430 --> 00:18:36.609
And it's one of my favorite fucking shirts ever.

00:18:37.094 --> 00:18:43.609
but I want to say the first time I saw this was definitely again, like midnight rewind sci-fi channel.

00:18:44.270 --> 00:18:48.795
remember my dad again, my dad, which we didn't have.

00:18:48.795 --> 00:18:49.414
Okay.

00:18:49.414 --> 00:18:53.398
So not to be too like involved in my childhood, my dad and I didn't have a whole lot in common.

00:18:53.398 --> 00:18:56.580
My dad was a sports aficionado.

00:18:56.580 --> 00:18:58.462
He boxed, he played football, basketball.

00:18:58.462 --> 00:19:00.624
He coached, like women's leagues.

00:19:00.624 --> 00:19:09.165
He coached, he professional at one point and he, you know, he coached me and my brother when, when I did, you know, give you did the sports ball?

00:19:09.165 --> 00:19:10.826
when I did sports ball.

00:19:11.286 --> 00:19:24.066
my brother who continued to do that for years was kind of, I always kind of felt like he was like the favorite, but there were these moments that he and I had together where, you know, playing video games, like that was the kind of thing that we had together.

00:19:24.066 --> 00:19:31.306
And then also watching like anime movies, cause he was the one that let me stay up and watch anime with him on these nights.

00:19:31.306 --> 00:19:37.986
And you know, there was the Lensman, which is based off of a Phil, a Phil Doc Smith.

00:19:38.541 --> 00:19:48.556
or LL Doc Smith, book series, vampire hunter D like I've told you about, and then Akira, know, Akira was one of those that he and I watched together.

00:19:48.556 --> 00:19:56.990
And it was just, I think the first time I saw it, I think like, that's the one thing like I always, it inspired me to like want to ride motorcycles.

00:19:56.990 --> 00:20:07.970
It inspired me to enjoy like things like cyberpunk, bright color lights, like these leather jackets, the whole look, the whole aesthetic of what, of everything that Akira was.

00:20:07.970 --> 00:20:10.300
What is called like neo futurism?

00:20:10.413 --> 00:20:12.973
Almost cyberpunk neo futurism.

00:20:12.973 --> 00:20:15.574
And I just I fell in love with it.

00:20:15.574 --> 00:20:21.653
And it was only on like, you know, an old school television, you know, back in the in the early 90s.

00:20:21.753 --> 00:20:29.594
And yeah, which is like in a dark living room sitting on the floor, just like watching eyes, eyes just super glued to the screen.

00:20:29.594 --> 00:20:31.173
And, know, I'll never forget.

00:20:31.173 --> 00:20:35.874
And I think, again, this was one of those ones where it was like you never heard a soundtrack like Akira.

00:20:35.874 --> 00:20:37.259
That was one of the first.

00:20:37.259 --> 00:21:08.551
Vinyl's of a soundtrack that I soundtrack that I ever bought was the Akira soundtrack on vinyl because it just sounds so like beautiful like just you know being able to sit there and it's it's crazy because While you're listening to it You can just see the city of Neo Tokyo like in your mind and it's so crisp and so vivid because of every little detail that is put into almost every scene if not like every square inch of every scene in this movie There's only one Akira, right?

00:21:08.551 --> 00:21:15.444
And I will say sort of to build off that from my end, I do remember seeing it in passing growing up.

00:21:15.444 --> 00:21:37.377
I remember my friends really liking it again, folks that I hung out with because they liked Dragon Ball and Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! They really liked Akira, but I think my appreciation for this film didn't happen until much later in life because of again, as you said, the detail and you know, Studio Ghibli in my opinion is sort of, it's sort of my anchor to anime like as a, you know, art form, right?

00:21:37.377 --> 00:21:42.101
But Akira, there's only one, there's like eight incredible Studio Ghibli films.

00:21:42.101 --> 00:21:44.942
There's one Akira, right?

00:21:44.961 --> 00:21:51.684
So again, you reintroducing that to me much later in life, I'd say I was like 21 or 22 at the time.

00:21:51.806 --> 00:22:03.922
It has been a continuous pervasive piece of art that has stuck with me throughout all these years that when I talk to people up until here recently, I would tell them, you know, I, don't know.

00:22:03.922 --> 00:22:05.472
I'm not really much into manga.

00:22:05.472 --> 00:22:07.433
don't really, I would call it manga.

00:22:07.530 --> 00:22:09.537
Back then I would call I don't really like manga.

00:22:09.537 --> 00:22:13.045
You know, I don't like anime I don't like my manga.

00:22:13.045 --> 00:22:13.375
All right.

00:22:13.375 --> 00:22:17.058
I like my supermans and my spider-man I like my American made comics.

00:22:17.261 --> 00:22:18.301
It was an American made.

00:22:18.301 --> 00:22:19.461
I don't want nothing to do with it.

00:22:19.461 --> 00:22:20.882
Get it out of here.

00:22:21.942 --> 00:22:25.902
Akira was one of those sort of like.

00:22:26.122 --> 00:22:31.382
But I like Akira, but I like Pokemon kind of, you know, you know, rebuttal.

00:22:31.382 --> 00:22:34.082
So we sort of danced around enough.

00:22:34.082 --> 00:22:35.122
Let's get into this thing, Aaron.

00:22:35.122 --> 00:22:39.922
Let's do the summary and I'm going to let everyone know before we get in all this.

00:22:39.922 --> 00:22:42.701
Aaron, again, being the subject matter, weep.

00:22:42.701 --> 00:22:47.050
I'm to let him take a lot of this and then I will just sort of react to it.

00:22:47.050 --> 00:22:50.154
It's very different compared to our usual dynamic.

00:22:50.154 --> 00:22:53.922
It's usually me like presenting things to Aaron and then him reacting to it.

00:22:53.922 --> 00:22:57.066
We're going to switch sides here for Minute Rewind as we often have.

00:22:57.548 --> 00:23:05.940
Yeah, so the year is 2019, 31 years after being destroyed during World War 3 on July 16th, 1988.

00:23:05.940 --> 00:23:12.162
Tokyo, now known as Neo Tokyo, has been rebuilt and is a thriving metropolis.

00:23:12.162 --> 00:23:15.182
Shotaro Kaneda is the leader of a biker gang.

00:23:15.182 --> 00:23:22.765
His friend Tetsuo is injured in an accident and taken to a top secret government facility after developing uncontrollable telekinetic powers.

00:23:22.765 --> 00:23:25.645
Tetsuo turns against his friends and the city.

00:23:26.806 --> 00:23:28.709
I feel like a pretty good grasp on the story.

00:23:28.709 --> 00:23:30.291
mean, this thing's about a lot of this.

00:23:30.291 --> 00:23:32.309
This story is about a lot of things, right?

00:23:32.309 --> 00:23:34.117
It's about the effects of war.

00:23:34.117 --> 00:23:40.847
It's about class and our system, government control, jingoistic scientific experiments.

00:23:40.847 --> 00:23:41.986
Like there's so many things.

00:23:41.986 --> 00:23:50.087
conspiracies, government corruption, again, human experimentation, know, the perversion of science.

00:23:50.087 --> 00:23:54.809
This is about so perversion of man, perversion of science.

00:23:54.809 --> 00:24:20.022
again, yeah, it's so, this movie truly is a layered approach to what it looks like when people at so many different levels of society just want more and more control, whether it's natural or unnatural, whether it's for the good of mankind or whether it's for the good of themselves, like in a selfish extent.

00:24:20.224 --> 00:24:26.862
again, you have this, yeah, we'll get into it, but there's just, there's so many layers, know, Shrek would love this movie.

00:24:26.862 --> 00:24:27.751
It's like a parfait.

00:24:27.751 --> 00:24:29.563
It's got layers.

00:24:29.563 --> 00:24:35.493
I will say that like the number, you know, me again, as I often do, I'm looking, I'm like, what is the core?

00:24:35.493 --> 00:24:36.174
Where's the hook?

00:24:36.174 --> 00:24:37.375
What is the story really about?

00:24:37.375 --> 00:24:47.518
And what I sort of glommed from the story is it kind of feels like everyone is no longer worried about surviving extinction.

00:24:47.518 --> 00:24:50.608
They're feeling, they're trying to figure out how to adapt to it.

00:24:50.608 --> 00:24:56.332
The very first shot of the movie and of the manga as well is the explosion from Akira.

00:24:56.332 --> 00:24:58.603
Well, you don't know that.

00:24:58.603 --> 00:24:59.403
at the beginning of the movie.

00:24:59.403 --> 00:25:00.374
Yeah, you don't really know.

00:25:00.374 --> 00:25:10.691
You just know that there's just this what looks to be like a nuclear, some kind of just explosion of in the, know, in this in this city.

00:25:10.810 --> 00:25:13.603
And there's nothing that really explains what sets it off.

00:25:13.603 --> 00:25:21.116
You're just kind of take you're just honestly, you're just dropped in the middle of this story that's already started decades before.

00:25:21.261 --> 00:25:21.932
So, yeah.

00:25:21.932 --> 00:25:23.282
And I kind of like that, right?

00:25:23.282 --> 00:25:27.145
Like it kind of seems like this world's already so lived in by the time we get to it.

00:25:27.145 --> 00:25:36.213
And, you know, in terms of trying to adapt rather than trying to survive, these folks have already survived a cataclysmic event, or at least most of them have.

00:25:36.213 --> 00:25:47.923
It's how they adapt and how you can sort of take control of the moment, take control of yourself and your environment and your situation in this very lucid sort of erratic environment.

00:25:47.923 --> 00:25:51.511
A lot of people thrive in those situations and unfortunately it feels like our world.

00:25:51.511 --> 00:25:52.842
Chris is getting political again.

00:25:52.842 --> 00:25:59.605
Kind of feels like our world is slowly trending this way where like empathy is it's like almost gone.

00:25:59.605 --> 00:26:03.997
There's like a there's like a wave of folks in our world that have a shred of empathy.

00:26:03.997 --> 00:26:11.109
Aaron and I have like a an ounce of empathy compared to what used to be required to be a good person 50 years ago.

00:26:11.109 --> 00:26:11.705
Right.

00:26:11.705 --> 00:26:15.829
I think that's going to be kind of the going forward.

00:26:15.829 --> 00:26:20.794
That's going to be a lot of determining factors in how society is going to.

00:26:20.794 --> 00:26:27.709
At some point, we're going to hit a tipping point where it's like these bubbles that burst, whether it's like crypto, whether it's the housing market.

00:26:27.709 --> 00:26:36.726
There's going to be this implosion of society to where the people that don't give a fuck and then the people that do give a fuck are going to kind of go head to head.

00:26:36.750 --> 00:26:38.069
or it'll flip completely.

00:26:38.069 --> 00:26:40.210
It'll stop being 40, 50 or 40, 60.

00:26:40.210 --> 00:26:42.130
It'll be 60, 40, you know?

00:26:42.130 --> 00:26:44.250
And then that's when the world really fucking changes.

00:26:44.250 --> 00:26:44.990
Yeah.

00:26:44.990 --> 00:26:46.069
You know?

00:26:46.069 --> 00:26:59.529
And I will say that like, I find it really interesting that the people that we're most supposed to care for is a insane biker group that are being run by a bunch of degenerate crazy people.

00:26:59.529 --> 00:27:03.250
Like we're supposed to love Tetsuya and Kaneda in this movie.

00:27:03.250 --> 00:27:04.609
Again, we should talk about this really quickly.

00:27:04.609 --> 00:27:05.470
Is it Kaneda?

00:27:05.470 --> 00:27:06.529
Is it Kanata?

00:27:06.605 --> 00:27:08.506
That was that's actually in my notes.

00:27:08.506 --> 00:27:20.286
according to the 1988 dubbing, which is my favorite, it's Canada, like Canada, Canada, Canada or Canada.

00:27:20.885 --> 00:27:22.346
That's, who, Oh yeah.

00:27:22.346 --> 00:27:23.586
Tetsuo is Tetsuo.

00:27:23.586 --> 00:27:27.374
Um, and then in the 2001 dubbing it's Canada.

00:27:27.374 --> 00:27:27.713
Okay.

00:27:27.713 --> 00:27:31.932
See, how I canada is how I been saying it.

00:27:32.074 --> 00:27:33.134
You're going to say canada.

00:27:33.134 --> 00:27:34.871
I'm going to say canada to really confuse the listener.

00:27:34.871 --> 00:27:36.618
potato, yeah.

00:27:37.375 --> 00:27:38.496
And we'll just go from there.

00:27:38.496 --> 00:27:44.481
But point being is that, and I'll end it here, we're supposed to care about these two people and the folks that sort of surround them.

00:27:44.481 --> 00:27:50.188
And they are both insane people, but it's the environment that made them that way.

00:27:50.188 --> 00:27:52.449
Bad people aren't born, they're created.

00:27:52.509 --> 00:27:56.617
And these two people are part of a generation that know nothing but this.

00:27:56.617 --> 00:27:57.160
Exactly.

00:27:57.160 --> 00:27:58.073
This is one of the...

00:27:58.073 --> 00:28:02.055
And I'm not getting anywhere near as political as you are.

00:28:02.882 --> 00:28:06.992
The revolution about to be televised, you picked the right time but the wrong guy.

00:28:07.778 --> 00:28:09.441
The wrong guy.

00:28:13.530 --> 00:28:27.196
The only thing I'm gonna say about these two characters who are the main, like who really are the main standout characters, because you have the general, you have several other people who stand out, but Kaneda and Tetsuo, I'm just gonna call him Kaneda, Kaneda and Tetsuo.

00:28:28.097 --> 00:28:36.501
Kaneda is a natural leader, people, like he's got that charm, he's got that bravado that people naturally follow.

00:28:36.854 --> 00:28:41.796
people want to be around because he feels confident and he feels like he empowers the people around him.

00:28:41.797 --> 00:28:48.760
Where you have somebody who is like Tetsuo who is like he just comes off as like a weaker person.

00:28:48.760 --> 00:28:49.861
People pick on him.

00:28:49.861 --> 00:28:51.041
He's been picked on his entire life.

00:28:51.041 --> 00:28:52.722
He's been treated like shit.

00:28:52.781 --> 00:29:02.659
And that's the difference is you have one person who was probably treated like shit also who just decided that he was going to step into this direction of being a confident like I don't give a fuck.

00:29:02.659 --> 00:29:05.413
Like I'm going to beat your ass before you beat mine attitude.

00:29:05.413 --> 00:29:26.357
versus somebody who was probably struggling with that good or bad righteousness versus evil in themselves and just kind of like couldn't make that decision but then is thrust into this position where he is given these powers and now it's I mean I would if you've ever seen the movie Chronicle, which is very much very much a mirror of this movie.

00:29:26.357 --> 00:29:36.976
It's three kids who are all given powers and one is the kind of the week the kind of picked on youth and has like a hard life.

00:29:36.976 --> 00:29:45.182
Dad's like parents are abusive and then he gets these powers and he just doesn't know how to tolerate them or handle them as they continue to grow.

00:29:45.182 --> 00:29:51.768
And he just thinks that he that's this is the only way he's going to get power and therefore he takes advantage of them and it doesn't turn out in his favor.

00:29:51.768 --> 00:29:56.352
So again, very much mirror the same concept as as Akira.

00:29:56.352 --> 00:29:58.953
One thing I'm gonna say Akira is considered a forerunner.

00:29:59.258 --> 00:30:05.903
We talked about this earlier of the second wave of anime fandom commonly referred to as Japan animation as as the Japan animation movement.

00:30:05.903 --> 00:30:08.193
It began in the early 1990s.

00:30:08.193 --> 00:30:12.797
Like I said, know, Chris, you were at the forefront of it earlier in your life.

00:30:12.797 --> 00:30:15.449
And I was kind of already kind of hit my stride a little bit.

00:30:15.449 --> 00:30:25.945
I think I was about five, six years old, you know, once I hit the 90s and then again, like eight or nine is really again, early 90s is when I started watching it on TV.

00:30:25.945 --> 00:30:28.693
So it gained a massive cult following.

00:30:28.693 --> 00:30:37.974
Akira is credited with setting the scene for anime franchises such as Pokemon, Dragon Ball, and New Aruto to become globally cultural phenomenon.

00:30:38.763 --> 00:30:40.034
Yeah, absolutely.

00:30:40.034 --> 00:30:41.625
And that's again, I'm part of that generation.

00:30:41.625 --> 00:30:52.298
And what I found really interesting is that when Tokyo was chosen to host the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 2013 bidding process, several commentators claimed that Akira had predicted this future event.

00:30:52.298 --> 00:30:52.897
Yeah.

00:30:52.897 --> 00:30:55.115
Like so in February of 2020.

00:30:55.115 --> 00:31:02.921
And again, the pandemic is sort of this weird time where I don't really know how to contextualize it even now.

00:31:02.921 --> 00:31:08.781
And we're five years past it still like we're still in 2025 dealing with some of the effects of that time.

00:31:08.781 --> 00:31:19.821
during the coronavirus pandemic, 147 days before the Olympics, a scene from Akira is called for the cancellation of the 2020 Olympics or a graffiti stating just cancel it 147 days before the event.

00:31:19.821 --> 00:31:25.241
Again, we see that also in the film, let a social media trend calling for the cancellation of those Olympics.

00:31:25.241 --> 00:31:28.162
And of course it was postponed until 2021.

00:31:28.342 --> 00:31:38.847
So if you look carefully during the scene where Tetsuo first begins to hallucinate, you can see a series of events that happens in the movie like Tetsuo's rampage on the city, his fight with Kaneda.

00:31:38.847 --> 00:31:44.821
however you want to say it, Tetsuo's mutation, Kairi's death and his flashback when he first met Kaneda.

00:31:44.821 --> 00:31:50.385
So Aaron, this is one of the more interesting things that I found while doing research for this episode.

00:31:50.385 --> 00:31:55.628
Akira roughly costs 700 million yen or 5.5 million USD to produce.

00:31:55.628 --> 00:32:05.675
There was however a 30 plus year rumor that the film actually cost 1.1 billion yen or $9 million at the time, which would have made it the most expensive anime of all time.

00:32:05.675 --> 00:32:10.563
However, that has been since debunked by Crunchyrolls reporter Darryl Harding in 2020.

00:32:10.563 --> 00:32:23.051
Now Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron is the most expensive anime of all time at $294 million or 43.525 trillion yen.

00:32:23.992 --> 00:32:25.492
Isn't that crazy?

00:32:26.994 --> 00:32:34.000
is so I mean to think that any movie would cost a trillion of anything of any kind of currency is mind boggling.

00:32:34.000 --> 00:32:36.601
But yeah, just just absolute madness.

00:32:36.601 --> 00:32:37.549
Now, Aaron.

00:32:37.549 --> 00:32:41.109
Again, as I mentioned in the intro, I've only read up to the third volume of the manga.

00:32:41.109 --> 00:32:42.029
You have read everything.

00:32:42.029 --> 00:32:47.609
So you may be more of an expert in this, but I did want to point out some of the main differences between the movie and the manga.

00:32:47.609 --> 00:32:59.069
So while most of the character designs and the settings were adapted from the manga faithfully, the plot and some of the characters introduced later in the manga differ considerably, which continued publication two years after the film's release.

00:32:59.069 --> 00:33:07.630
Now there were some espers outside of 25, 26, 27, 28, 28 being a Kira who we don't see in the film and Tetsuo at 41.

00:33:07.965 --> 00:33:09.096
that are shown in the manga.

00:33:09.096 --> 00:33:14.371
see a lot more of those, not only in the manga, but we get more time with each of those espers throughout the manga.

00:33:14.372 --> 00:33:23.561
You can also get much more of a back story from Lady Miyoko, who we see in the movie as sort of a protester religious type, but you find out in the manga that she's actually number 19.

00:33:23.561 --> 00:33:33.076
She's one of the test subjects that survived the first Akira explosion, which is absolutely, it feels to me like a wild missed opportunity to include her in this movie somehow.

00:33:33.134 --> 00:33:48.473
This, I don't know how they would ever do it, but if they could ever turn the actual anime, or not anime, the actual like manga into that and go into depth and go into like the journey of it all, it would be amazing.

00:33:48.473 --> 00:34:10.213
Especially with the amount of stuff that we have now that it's post-apocalyptic, because that's the thing is like, there is so much fucking destruction of Neo Tokyo in the manga that it really paves the way for like, an incredible story and the whole, the transformation, the, the actual, first off, there's like multiple time jumps.

00:34:10.465 --> 00:34:20.110
the power arc of Kadeida throughout his journey of, of aspiring to what Akira was is absolute bonkers.

00:34:20.110 --> 00:34:26.844
The, the shit that he does and the shit that the world does to stop him is such an incredible story.

00:34:26.844 --> 00:34:29.849
Visually, it is amazing to read through.

00:34:29.849 --> 00:34:31.525
It is Amazing.

00:34:31.525 --> 00:34:34.047
Like the scenery, the full page spreads.

00:34:34.047 --> 00:34:49.492
Like I highly recommend anybody digitally or, you know, in person, like, like tangibly read through the rest of this, because there's like double page spreads of just scenery of just destruction that is so fucking detailed.

00:34:50.373 --> 00:34:51.233
Nothing like.

00:34:51.233 --> 00:34:55.074
manga is an insane master class in how to do comics.

00:34:55.074 --> 00:35:01.054
What he is able to do in those 2000 pages or six volumes is insane.

00:35:01.054 --> 00:35:04.974
I'll again, I would just echo what you're saying in terms of like the double double page spreads.

00:35:04.974 --> 00:35:08.393
If you talk to an Aaron, we talked to a lot of comic creators here on the podcast.

00:35:08.393 --> 00:35:19.050
If you talk to any of them, I would say 99.5 % of them will shutter at the idea of drawing a cityscape and any commission or comic page.

00:35:19.050 --> 00:35:22.871
If you ask them, draw spider man James Heron likes it.

00:35:22.871 --> 00:35:23.014
Yeah.

00:35:23.014 --> 00:35:30.588
There's, there's a couple of like Danny Earls loves doing a landscape, you know, but majority of them look at that and they go, holy crap.

00:35:30.588 --> 00:35:39.565
I'm going to be stuck with a ruler and a fine tip pencil for the next 17 hours trying to create the Manhattan, you know, skyscape.

00:35:39.565 --> 00:35:43.007
And you see it multiple times throughout this book.

00:35:43.007 --> 00:35:46.750
And also I think in a different, more incredible way.

00:35:47.039 --> 00:35:48.050
in the film as well.

00:35:48.050 --> 00:35:49.983
And we'll talk about how they were able to accomplish that.

00:35:49.983 --> 00:35:54.717
But I will say that there are a couple of other things missing from the movie that we also don't get from the manga.

00:35:54.717 --> 00:35:58.920
We get Chiyoko, we have the captain, we have Birdman.

00:35:58.920 --> 00:36:03.123
We never meet any of those folks in the film and they're huge players in the manga.

00:36:03.123 --> 00:36:16.423
And I think more importantly, maybe most importantly is that we never get to meet Akira, the Esper in the actual movie, but we get a pretty good conversation between him and Tetsuo in I think it's in like volume three.

00:36:16.423 --> 00:36:45.918
I want to say is when they first meet in that little frozen underground basement place So Atomo actually he said this back in 1991 He ultimately regretted how Akira the film ended because again the manga continued continued on two years after the film had been created He says as I worked on the film I came to like the idea of having two different but very similar sides of the same story But part of me still thinks that part of the original was sacrificed meaning the original ending of that film.

00:36:45.918 --> 00:36:54.186
The film's ending where Kaneda is absorbed into this psychic explosion and sees Tetsuo's old memories was one Atoma wished he could have used for the manga.

00:36:54.186 --> 00:36:55.516
In the manga, Kaneda and co.

00:36:55.516 --> 00:36:57.188
fight off the United Nations.

00:36:57.188 --> 00:37:02.753
They threaten them by pretending that they have Akira still within the possession and are willing to use him.

00:37:02.913 --> 00:37:05.815
And then they establish the great Tokyo Empire.

00:37:05.815 --> 00:37:07.456
So, Aaron, there's some fun facts here.

00:37:07.456 --> 00:37:08.565
You want to go over some of those?

00:37:08.565 --> 00:37:19.853
So Atomo originally created the Akira manga as an homage to manga artist Mitsuteru Yokoyama who created Tetsujin 28 in 1963.

00:37:19.853 --> 00:37:30.559
Both Akira and Tetsujin 28 have a main character named Shotaro Kaneda and Akira's number 28 designation compares with the robot's number 28 designation.

00:37:30.739 --> 00:37:36.572
Also at around 38 minute mark of the film where Colonel Shikishima is listening to Dr.

00:37:36.572 --> 00:37:45.670
Onishi's assessment concerning Kyoko's most recent dream, a caution note on the doctor's equipment features the following English text beneath it.

00:37:54.077 --> 00:37:56.418
Which was described with Japanese characters.

00:37:56.418 --> 00:38:00.603
The text is actually a passive aggressive message from the animator, which roughly translates as follows.

00:38:00.603 --> 00:38:02.704
Why do I have to even draw this part?

00:38:02.704 --> 00:38:03.644
Give me a break.

00:38:03.644 --> 00:38:04.724
Geez.

00:38:05.931 --> 00:38:12.909
Yeah, I can only imagine the madhouse that was the production house, the animators, you know, area.

00:38:12.951 --> 00:38:16.594
Again, we'll talk about how many cells it took to make this film here in just a bit.

00:38:16.594 --> 00:38:25.025
But to see what they had to go through in order to make this film look as good as it does, I had to imagine was an insane venture.

00:38:25.025 --> 00:38:25.628
Yeah, I just.

00:38:25.628 --> 00:38:33.800
want to state again, again, like where he talks about the difference in the endings and what really goes into both film and manga.

00:38:33.800 --> 00:38:47.193
It's such a night and day story because that, you know, again, there's like time jumps where we see the, like the rebellion of people in the anime versus the manga.

00:38:47.193 --> 00:38:52.204
The manga is so much more of an actual overthrow rebellion.

00:38:52.204 --> 00:38:53.635
It's not just writing.

00:38:53.635 --> 00:38:55.827
It's not just, trouble in the streets.

00:38:55.827 --> 00:39:01.521
Like there's an actual overthrow of the Japanese Empire.

00:39:01.590 --> 00:39:03.244
And it's a whole cast of characters too.

00:39:03.244 --> 00:39:12.702
Yes, because of corruption, because of, you know, the world and the state of the world, because of, you know, the power struggle between Akira and Tetsuo.

00:39:12.702 --> 00:39:14.744
There's so much more that goes into it.

00:39:14.744 --> 00:39:26.443
it's so, it's, it's, again, it's like, there's this difference between where the people support it and where the people are the protagonists or the antagonists of this overthrow.

00:39:26.443 --> 00:39:32.800
And it's just, it's so incredibly worthwhile to watch and to read both.

00:39:32.800 --> 00:39:33.150
Right.

00:39:33.150 --> 00:39:33.911
100%.

00:39:33.911 --> 00:39:36.032
They offer very different experiences.

00:39:36.032 --> 00:39:43.039
And I think the main sort of thought behind that is again, while they do offer different experiences, you can sort of love them in the same way.

00:39:43.039 --> 00:39:48.313
If you love one, I'm going to imagine that you're probably going to love the, you know, the other one as well.

00:39:48.313 --> 00:39:49.873
So we got to talk about Aaron.

00:39:49.873 --> 00:40:01.193
We got to talk about maybe one of the most iconic scenes in film, probably the most iconic scene in anime history, which is the power slide, which we also see, we obviously see Kanae to do at the very beginning of the film.

00:40:01.193 --> 00:40:07.726
Now, This is like it's got to be one of the most homaged scenes ever to list them all would be silly.

00:40:07.726 --> 00:40:09.246
But I'm just curious.

00:40:09.326 --> 00:40:10.744
Do you have a favorite?

00:40:10.945 --> 00:40:12.786
Oh, we saw it recently with Sonic three.

00:40:12.786 --> 00:40:13.925
I think it was shadow.

00:40:13.925 --> 00:40:15.505
It did a power slide.

00:40:16.226 --> 00:40:22.166
But I think if you want to think about it really quick, mine was Robin and Batman, the animated series in 1993.

00:40:22.166 --> 00:40:24.905
He does a power slide and it's really awesome.

00:40:25.126 --> 00:40:26.826
So also, nope, nope.

00:40:26.826 --> 00:40:27.342
Does one.

00:40:27.342 --> 00:40:34.282
That was, I was gonna say that's, that's one of my favorite also there's it's really hard to, to pick.

00:40:34.282 --> 00:40:36.521
mean, cause it's, it's been done in, in Pokemon.

00:40:36.521 --> 00:40:41.041
It's been done in teenage mutant ninja turtles, like nurse nurse, not nurse officer.

00:40:41.041 --> 00:40:42.882
Uh, Jenny did it.

00:40:43.528 --> 00:40:47.469
Isaki O'jimbo does it in the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles book.

00:40:47.469 --> 00:40:48.230
Yes.

00:40:48.230 --> 00:40:48.769
The animated series.

00:40:48.769 --> 00:40:49.461
Excuse me.

00:40:49.461 --> 00:40:52.967
In one of my favorite animes, was Gurren Lagann.

00:40:52.967 --> 00:41:00.545
It's not on a motorcycle, but there's a scene where Yoko, a litner, she like, it's like the first, it's the first episode.

00:41:00.545 --> 00:41:07.684
She like slides in front of the two main characters and she like does like an uncurious slide, but it's just her legs kind of spread.

00:41:08.690 --> 00:41:13.394
You know, you also see it in obviously in Ready Player One, which I know you were very excited about.

00:41:13.394 --> 00:41:29.818
They show that pretty prominently in the trailer initially, but also there's an entire race sequence where our main character is driving around in a Canada's bike, which I think one of the more interesting things about this is that Canada's bike, which is one of the most iconic vehicles in cinema history, doesn't actually have a name.

00:41:29.818 --> 00:41:30.958
It's just called Canada's bike.

00:41:30.958 --> 00:41:37.032
I thought it would have some kind of like, I don't know, product name or something, but no, it's just a, it's a red bike.

00:41:37.463 --> 00:41:40.400
that he stole, that you find out in this movie that he stole.

00:41:41.405 --> 00:41:42.226
yeah.

00:41:42.226 --> 00:41:43.681
Aaron, let's talk about our director here.

00:41:43.681 --> 00:41:51.887
The director is Katsuhiro Otomo, which I love, I love so much of what he has done.

00:41:52.128 --> 00:42:01.916
And I don't know if I ever told you, like, I'm sure I've mentioned it in our friendship, but Robot Carnival was one of the other animes that I saw on Midnight Rewind.

00:42:01.916 --> 00:42:08.362
And it's just, it's a anthology kind of movie, but it's all music-based.

00:42:08.603 --> 00:42:10.074
And it's so beautiful.

00:42:10.074 --> 00:42:12.577
And he apparently did two segments in...

00:42:12.577 --> 00:42:14.079
that theology.

00:42:14.260 --> 00:42:27.101
and then the, another one that he's done is steam boy, which was one of my favorites as well, because it's, it's such, it's, I love the technology that this guy can create.

00:42:27.101 --> 00:42:36.876
I love what he everybody, Aaron, if you want Aaron to buy a thing or like a thing, put either a very large muscular woman in that thing or some type of cyberpunk setting.

00:42:36.876 --> 00:42:37.126
Yeah.

00:42:37.126 --> 00:42:38.219
Those two things.

00:42:38.219 --> 00:42:43.795
muscular women, and giant robots.

00:42:43.795 --> 00:42:53.693
Which he actually also directed a CG short for Gundam Mission to the Rise, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Gundam franchise.

00:42:53.693 --> 00:42:56.418
So just an incredible director.

00:42:56.418 --> 00:43:11.681
Yeah, he's in the Eisner Hall of Fame currently and not that the Isers are the end all be all award, but to list all of Thomas awards would be again, that would be as long of a list as the people that have paid homage to the Akira slide, you know, like there's no point.

00:43:11.681 --> 00:43:14.204
It's just, just know that it's iconic.

00:43:14.210 --> 00:43:35.679
Yes, even we'll see it even recently with I mean, not just the slide, but the scene like the poster for this when he's walking up to his motorcycle and that like, like just recently we saw I think was a Jimenez Jimenez cover for absolute Batman number one that is still continuing to sell for in disgusting amount of Have your reviews.

00:43:35.679 --> 00:43:36.900
Yeah.

00:43:36.900 --> 00:43:38.501
But yeah, fucking disgusting.

00:43:38.501 --> 00:43:40.489
Like I hate it.

00:43:40.489 --> 00:43:41.755
the accurate.

00:43:42.291 --> 00:43:46.954
So bad and they actually did to like to do a kind of a mirrored effect of it.

00:43:46.954 --> 00:43:49.789
They did a joker version as well yeah, they're going to milk it.

00:43:49.789 --> 00:43:50.670
They're going to milk.

00:43:50.670 --> 00:43:52.335
Both that thing.

00:43:52.335 --> 00:43:56.027
Otomo did not intend to adapt the series outside of the manga.

00:43:56.027 --> 00:43:57.139
Did you know that?

00:43:57.809 --> 00:43:58.923
I learned it today.

00:43:58.923 --> 00:44:05.295
You learned it today, However, he became very intrigued when the offer to develop his work for the screen was put before him.

00:44:05.295 --> 00:44:13.739
He agreed to an anime film adaptation of the series on the grounds that he retained creative control of the project, which every creator should do.

00:44:13.739 --> 00:44:17.112
Yeah, not everyone has necessarily that kind of reach.

00:44:17.112 --> 00:44:23.896
And it's kind of surprising that he even had that sort of power to go, if you want to make my shit, I have to be the one in charge.

00:44:23.896 --> 00:44:26.648
But if you can, you should you should do that.

00:44:26.648 --> 00:44:27.398
Yes.

00:44:27.630 --> 00:44:40.282
Otomo also claimed to filled over 2,000 pages of notebooks containing various ideas and character designs for the film, but the final storyboard consisted of a trimmed down 738 pages.

00:44:40.282 --> 00:44:44.695
Just a very short amount of seven hundred and thirty eight pages.

00:44:44.695 --> 00:44:45.565
Wow.

00:44:46.367 --> 00:44:59.478
So another director we talked about not too long ago with Paprika, Satoshi Khan, actually, who who worked as an assistant for Tomo for both the manga and the film has cited Akira and especially Domo as his influences.

00:45:00.878 --> 00:45:01.400
We did.

00:45:01.400 --> 00:45:01.739
Yeah.

00:45:01.739 --> 00:45:09.070
And everybody who doesn't know Satoshi Khan, first of all, shame on you, but also Tokyo, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika.

00:45:09.070 --> 00:45:11.090
Millennium actress, perfect blue.

00:45:11.090 --> 00:45:20.389
mean, come on, know, he is, should Toshi con sort of sitting on the shoulders of a Tomo seems wild to think about.

00:45:20.389 --> 00:45:23.365
However, a way that's sort of accurate.

00:45:23.438 --> 00:45:31.777
I love the fact that in Japan, anime and manga are just essentially like pillars of entertainment over there.

00:45:31.777 --> 00:45:38.398
And therefore they're taking so much more serious than we take them over here in Western society.

00:45:38.717 --> 00:45:41.577
I think it's a phenomenal way.

00:45:41.577 --> 00:45:43.885
It's just another beautiful piece of art.

00:45:43.885 --> 00:45:48.579
It'd be like, you know, if you worked in comics and then you were like, okay, I've done enough in comics.

00:45:48.579 --> 00:45:49.949
Let me go work in television.

00:45:49.949 --> 00:45:51.300
And then you were successful in television.

00:45:51.300 --> 00:45:55.893
Then you went and worked in film, you know, like that's the progression that they sort of do over there.

00:45:55.893 --> 00:45:57.134
They work on manga.

00:45:57.134 --> 00:46:00.371
They eventually work on anime when that work is being adapted.

00:46:00.371 --> 00:46:06.119
Cause a lot of times from what I understand, manga and anime, when they adapt them, they're closer.

00:46:06.119 --> 00:46:09.161
They're much closer actually, which is why they're so freaking long.

00:46:09.161 --> 00:46:10.762
So like, you know, that's why.

00:46:10.822 --> 00:46:14.813
Bleach has like 17 seasons because it's just the manga one piece.

00:46:14.813 --> 00:46:53.208
Yeah, all of those That's why they're so incredibly long is because they have so much material to pull from so Atama also wrote and I found this really interesting drew He wrote and drew a Batman short story called the third mask in 1996 Batman black and white number four Which is really interesting and the story if you haven't read it and I won't spoil too much in case you want to read it It's only like I want to say eight pages, but it's basically It has a strong connection to my favorite Batman story of all time, which is Batman ego, where you see almost a split of Bruce's personality from Batman and the Batman you meet at the beginning of this short story is not the same Batman that you meet at the end of the story, which I found really cool.

00:46:53.208 --> 00:46:55.873
So, Aaron, I'm to pass it off to you here again.

00:46:55.873 --> 00:46:57.650
You're going to know more about this than me.

00:46:57.650 --> 00:46:59.032
Let's talk about our production house.

00:46:59.032 --> 00:47:03.083
Let's see how we got Akira over here in the States.

00:47:03.083 --> 00:47:13.072
Yeah, so TMS Entertainment, formerly Kiyo Koichi Corporation, is known, which is actually owned by Sega, originally released in the U.S.

00:47:13.072 --> 00:47:14.768
by Streamline Pictures in 1990.

00:47:14.768 --> 00:47:28.942
A decade later, Genion Entertainment attained the license to Akira and spent roughly $1 million in restoring the film's audio and video quality, as well as recording an all new, more accurate English dub.

00:47:28.942 --> 00:47:30.561
There's your dub you don't like right there.

00:47:30.561 --> 00:47:32.889
We even know who to blame for that one now.

00:47:33.677 --> 00:47:42.659
streamlined pictures are reported to have become the film's distributor when both George Lucas and Steven Spielberg passed on it and labeled it unmarketable in the States.

00:47:43.181 --> 00:47:49.601
It's that feels really wrong on the surface, but I kind of empathize with Lucas and Spielberg there.

00:47:49.601 --> 00:47:53.981
Like when you look at Akira and you got to remember when this film came out, right?

00:47:53.981 --> 00:47:57.601
It was like the late eighties and animation was not considered.

00:47:57.601 --> 00:47:59.782
It didn't have that respect that it has now.

00:47:59.782 --> 00:48:03.422
And again, we have we have anime to thank for a lot of that, right?

00:48:03.422 --> 00:48:07.742
Like at the time animation was so it was shown strictly to children.

00:48:07.742 --> 00:48:11.581
Like there was very, very little, if any, animation for adults.

00:48:11.581 --> 00:48:14.054
So when bringing it over to the States.

00:48:14.054 --> 00:48:17.518
That was the first thing a lot of times they would ask me like, how do we market this to kids?

00:48:17.518 --> 00:48:19.978
Not, how do we market this to adults?

00:48:19.978 --> 00:48:28.184
So to play devil's advocate a little bit again, it does seem silly that you would pass on the idea of, distributing Akira.

00:48:28.184 --> 00:48:34.929
Like imagine if Spielberg and, or Lucas had done that, but yeah, I get it to a certain extent.

00:48:35.150 --> 00:48:44.047
The original Streamline dub was unavailable for 12 years until Funimation reinstated it for their 25th anniversary edition Blu-ray DVD combo pack in 2013.

00:48:44.047 --> 00:48:47.451
That's why I hated it for over a decade.

00:48:47.451 --> 00:48:49.320
Because you just couldn't get the other version?

00:48:49.445 --> 00:48:53.246
I fucking it's like, okay, first off, there's two things Akira.

00:48:53.246 --> 00:48:57.768
I would much rather watch with a 1988 dubbing if I'm going to watch it with dubbing.

00:48:57.768 --> 00:48:58.489
All right.

00:48:58.489 --> 00:48:59.449
And star wars.

00:48:59.449 --> 00:49:06.311
would much rather watch it without the additions that George Lucas added in later on.

00:49:07.751 --> 00:49:09.311
The original theatrical release.

00:49:09.311 --> 00:49:14.704
I don't want to watch this new fangled fucking job of walking around this Millennium Falcon because he looks like utter garbage.

00:49:14.704 --> 00:49:15.342
Right.

00:49:15.342 --> 00:49:16.961
Now let me ask you this, cause we didn't talk about it yet.

00:49:16.961 --> 00:49:19.181
Did you watch the dub or the sub?

00:49:20.422 --> 00:49:20.782
Okay.

00:49:20.782 --> 00:49:21.621
Yeah, I did too.

00:49:21.621 --> 00:49:25.541
And I watched the 2000 and well, the newer one, the one, yeah.

00:49:25.541 --> 00:49:26.842
2001 version.

00:49:27.905 --> 00:49:52.925
Leave me alone! Leave me alone! Yeah, I actually switched it back and forth and I was watching because like there were like scenes where I was like, fuck, I don't remember because I couldn't remember if it was when I first started watching.

00:49:52.925 --> 00:49:53.485
It's been a while.

00:49:53.485 --> 00:49:57.085
So I was like, is this the 88 or is this the 2001?

00:49:57.085 --> 00:49:59.106
And I was like, oh, shit, no, it sounds like ass.

00:49:59.106 --> 00:50:01.186
And then I rewound it and I watch it.

00:50:01.186 --> 00:50:13.909
And there are certain scenes that I love because like there's a scene where, you know, right after the first biker like gang fight, they're, you know, the police are coming and, you know, Canada's like, oh, my motorcourses are just getting warmed up.

00:50:13.909 --> 00:50:17.130
And I'm like, he sounds like such a douche there.

00:50:17.530 --> 00:50:24.753
So, but it's funny because like there's so many different, like the voice actors obviously are quite different because, know, just much different eras.

00:50:24.972 --> 00:50:28.213
But like, I like, I like Kaneda's voice.

00:50:28.213 --> 00:50:33.094
I like the voices of the espers is so much more raspy.

00:50:33.094 --> 00:50:35.735
So, so, and this is one thing I was going to say as well.

00:50:35.735 --> 00:50:42.733
The first scene where, which espers, it's a little boy that's first being like, like escorted out and the cops.

00:50:42.733 --> 00:50:48.034
kill the guy, the human that's like, or the guy that's like escorting the Esper, you know, he's like, run, you know?

00:50:48.034 --> 00:50:50.253
And the kid's like, huh, huh.

00:50:50.253 --> 00:50:59.333
So the new one is like, it's his scream is like, ah, but like, if you watch the 88 version, it sounds like a, really scared kid.

00:50:59.333 --> 00:51:03.884
And it that the 88 version gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

00:51:03.884 --> 00:51:05.204
I want to say that was number 27.

00:51:05.204 --> 00:51:05.925
Was that Masuro?

00:51:05.925 --> 00:51:07.773
Yeah, I think that's who that was.

00:51:07.773 --> 00:51:09.065
It was the one right before Akira.

00:51:09.065 --> 00:51:10.436
Akira is number 28.

00:51:10.436 --> 00:51:13.077
but yeah, moving on here.

00:51:13.077 --> 00:51:14.608
And this sort of speaks on what we're talking about.

00:51:14.608 --> 00:51:27.222
The very beginning of the Midnight Rewind is that streamline dubbed the streamlined dubbed version first aired on the sci fi channel in the 1990s during a week long anime event called Saturday Anime Block.

00:51:27.574 --> 00:51:30.036
Saturday mornings on the Sci-Fi Channel.

00:51:30.036 --> 00:51:32.538
It's Japanese animation in the raw.

00:51:32.538 --> 00:51:36.010
And this ain't no swim in the kiddie pool.

00:51:36.010 --> 00:51:39.572
Cutting-edge anime that's pure power and sheer genius.

00:51:39.572 --> 00:51:41.893
Be ready to receive this sacrifice.

00:51:41.893 --> 00:51:45.365
Saturday anime on the Sci-Fi Channel, next.

00:51:45.826 --> 00:52:02.356
The Pioneer Dub, which is the one that I grew up with, twice on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block, once on December 7th, 2013 with a rating of a TVMA, of course, and again on December 20th, 2014, both times with the explicit language and nudity censored.

00:52:02.356 --> 00:52:05.639
And there's really only one scene I can think of that has nudity.

00:52:05.639 --> 00:52:11.322
And of course, it's the scene where Tetsuo and his gal, who I'm spacing her name right now, is a Ryu.

00:52:11.943 --> 00:52:21.931
Ryu, they get attacked by the clown gang and That's like, yes, in a movie that's full of shocking body horror and violence and anger.

00:52:21.931 --> 00:52:33.726
That seemed to me is like the most shocking where you see Tetsuo get essentially get his ass beat and then his, you know, bystander of a girlfriend gets.

00:52:33.726 --> 00:52:39.447
mean, she was within moments of being assaulted if it wasn't for Kaneda and crew showing up to save them.

00:52:39.447 --> 00:52:42.929
And then, of course, Tetsuo being the dickhead that he is gets angry about it afterwards.

00:52:42.929 --> 00:52:43.750
So.

00:52:43.884 --> 00:52:49.025
That right there, don't know about you, but for me, was like watching it or rewatching it this time.

00:52:49.025 --> 00:52:54.568
There was something visceral about that scene that was maybe more impactful than any other scene in the movie.

00:52:54.592 --> 00:52:55.742
Absolutely.

00:52:56.003 --> 00:53:02.507
it's funny that you say it's not funny, but it's interesting that you say that it's like shocking because it's not even the part where like they rip her shirt.

00:53:02.507 --> 00:53:02.918
Right.

00:53:02.918 --> 00:53:03.518
It's shocking.

00:53:03.518 --> 00:53:14.927
It's when she's walking, like when they're talking to Tetsuo and she walks up and she's like holding her shirt, but she's got like this just beat up face and like, yeah.

00:53:14.927 --> 00:53:16.027
And it's just like, holy shit.

00:53:16.027 --> 00:53:18.300
Like that is actually more shocking.

00:53:18.300 --> 00:53:18.800
Right.

00:53:18.800 --> 00:53:21.547
Even on top of like, there's just a momentary scene.

00:53:21.547 --> 00:53:26.219
where Tetsuo starts hallucinating and literally his guts are like spilling out of his body.

00:53:26.219 --> 00:53:39.458
that scene of actual closer to like realistic violence is more shocking than that, which is, again, I think it's a very interesting commentary on culture then and now.

00:53:39.458 --> 00:53:41.318
Right, 100%.

00:53:41.318 --> 00:53:48.445
So this movie was also notable for being one of the few animated films to be released in the Criterion collection, which we all know I am a collector of.

00:53:48.445 --> 00:53:54.228
However, I won't be collecting the Akira, Aaron, because in 1993 it was released as a laser disc edition.

00:53:55.449 --> 00:53:58.452
Don't know how many laser discs you all have in your collection.

00:53:58.452 --> 00:54:02.994
I guess if there was one that I was going to collect, I guess it probably would be Akira's Criterion collection.

00:54:02.994 --> 00:54:07.688
However, Criterion has not put out a Blu-ray or 4K edition.

00:54:07.751 --> 00:54:09.847
Akira or I would have already bought that.

00:54:10.190 --> 00:54:14.670
You can buy it on eBay right now for $75.

00:54:14.936 --> 00:54:15.945
not a bad investment.

00:54:15.945 --> 00:54:18.469
However, I do not have a laser disc player.

00:54:18.469 --> 00:54:20.411
I don't know why I would need one.

00:54:21.731 --> 00:54:23.833
If I bought one, it would be only to watch this movie.

00:54:23.833 --> 00:54:25.909
So anyway.

00:54:25.909 --> 00:54:27.150
laser disc?

00:54:27.793 --> 00:54:34.054
Think of a vinyl record, but it has a movie in Think of a giant CD that.

00:54:34.793 --> 00:54:37.414
That is in 720p.

00:54:38.454 --> 00:54:39.034
Maybe.

00:54:39.034 --> 00:54:40.994
Yeah, it's a 480 more than likely.

00:54:41.173 --> 00:54:43.494
But Aaron, let's get into the animation here.

00:54:43.494 --> 00:54:49.934
If you don't mind, I'd love to take this one because I think this might have been one of the crazier parts of my research for this film.

00:54:50.873 --> 00:54:56.693
And I think it also validates the greatest anime of all time title that this movie often gets right.

00:54:56.693 --> 00:55:00.661
So Akira was created with the use of celluloid transparent sheets.

00:55:00.661 --> 00:55:01.842
otherwise known as cells.

00:55:01.842 --> 00:55:12.784
This was often the form back in the day for animation during the, I would say forties until the early 2000s, before we get the sort of popularization of 3d animation, right?

00:55:12.784 --> 00:55:19.226
The subject of the scene is drawn directly onto the cell and the cell is then overlaid onto a static background image.

00:55:19.226 --> 00:55:25.018
So they would generally paint like a static background and then they would create multiple cells for that background.

00:55:25.018 --> 00:55:28.028
Think of like Studio Ghibli and in this film they're often painted.

00:55:28.190 --> 00:55:32.882
Then the characters redrawn in a slightly different position for each cell.

00:55:32.882 --> 00:55:37.903
And they do that over and over and over and over and over and over.

00:55:37.903 --> 00:55:41.945
And when photographed in a sequence and played back, it gives the illusion of movement.

00:55:41.945 --> 00:55:44.085
Now, Aaron, I don't know about you.

00:55:44.085 --> 00:55:51.728
I've been pretty vocal and I understand that the process is extremely grueling and that you probably couldn't pay animators enough to do this today.

00:55:51.728 --> 00:55:55.568
At least not like as a normal method of animation.

00:55:55.628 --> 00:55:58.891
This is so far and away the best way for animation.

00:55:58.891 --> 00:56:01.181
Like it always looks better, doesn't it?

00:56:01.302 --> 00:56:02.097
Yeah, absolutely.

00:56:02.097 --> 00:56:02.862
Yeah.

00:56:02.862 --> 00:56:04.161
And I get it, it's grueling.

00:56:04.161 --> 00:56:12.081
And a lot of the folks that were working on this probably were like near exhaustion, if not completely exhausted by the end of it.

00:56:12.101 --> 00:56:15.242
But the proof is on the paper, on the screen, right?

00:56:15.242 --> 00:56:16.961
Like it's incredible.

00:56:16.961 --> 00:56:26.842
And to sort of contextualize this, Akira averages 12 cells per second or even 24 during the more action packed detailed scenes.

00:56:26.922 --> 00:56:30.829
Now, again, I'm gonna contextualize it even more for you guys, okay?

00:56:30.829 --> 00:56:35.429
Akira has over 160,000 cells plus throughout the entire film.

00:56:35.429 --> 00:56:41.030
Now to compare that to other fan favorite films, you have Little Mermaid at 95,000 cells.

00:56:41.030 --> 00:56:43.429
You have the jungle book at 98,000 cells.

00:56:43.429 --> 00:56:46.630
You have the lion king at 119,000 cells.

00:56:46.630 --> 00:56:51.309
And then you're saying Chris, yeah, it's Disney, it's American, you know, all that bull crap.

00:56:51.309 --> 00:56:53.090
What about the Easter animation?

00:56:53.190 --> 00:56:56.590
My Neighbor Totoro has a heart and 44,000 cells.

00:56:56.869 --> 00:56:59.565
Akira has 20,000 more cells.

00:56:59.565 --> 00:57:00.945
than my neighbor Totoro.

00:57:00.945 --> 00:57:02.746
It's just crazy, right?

00:57:04.106 --> 00:57:04.885
Yeah.

00:57:04.925 --> 00:57:20.085
what made me think of the, I mean, what really made this crazy to me was that like, Aaron, do remember a couple of months ago when I went to go see Anastella 5555, the Daft Punk animation, and it was re-released for 4K and they used AI to upscale it, right?

00:57:20.465 --> 00:57:21.925
And it looked horrific, everybody.

00:57:21.925 --> 00:57:23.126
It was really, really bad.

00:57:23.126 --> 00:57:25.626
It was actually kind of soul crushing in a lot of ways.

00:57:25.869 --> 00:57:27.190
So I have the 4k Aaron.

00:57:27.190 --> 00:57:37.050
I'd love to talk to you, talk about your sort of recent investment in 4k for Akira watching the behind the scenes and all the things and sort of the restoration of this film before they put it out.

00:57:37.050 --> 00:57:44.929
There was a, there was a 2019 4k restoration version that I bought back in 2019 and they showed a lot of the behind the scenes on how they did that.

00:57:44.929 --> 00:57:55.726
And basically what they did is they took all the cells and they sort of expanded it and fine comb went through it with a fine comb to, you know, put it in high def both in terms of sound in terms of color.

00:57:55.726 --> 00:57:58.126
in terms of detail, all of the things.

00:57:58.306 --> 00:57:59.226
And you couldn't do that.

00:57:59.226 --> 00:58:03.925
You can't do that unless it's like Akira, you know, cause you need that many cells.

00:58:04.166 --> 00:58:15.585
The thing about AI upscale, and sorry, I'm going on a tire at everybody, but the thing about AI upscale is that it can only guess on how high def a scene is unless you have something for it to build off of.

00:58:15.585 --> 00:58:17.186
And this is not my endorsement AI.

00:58:17.186 --> 00:58:46.634
think it's stupid, but I will say that like, and I don't think AI was used at all in the creation or the recreation of the 4k for Akira, but I think if they were going to try to remaster it with 4K, it would be much easier and we would probably be able to tell less with Akira because there are so many fine details in this movie comparative to again, End of Stella 555, which looks like if you watch the original version, looks like it has a haze sort of cloudy filter over it, even the original version.

00:58:46.634 --> 00:58:50.074
So for AI to try to go in there and fix it, there's no possible way.

00:58:50.074 --> 00:58:53.793
It'll just look like gobbledygoop and it does, it looks bad.

00:58:54.253 --> 00:58:56.449
Aaron, do have anything you want to say there before I move on?

00:58:56.449 --> 00:59:02.713
So I'll tell you like one of the the first notes that I had when I was watching this because I like to take notes whenever we're doing these.

00:59:02.713 --> 00:59:03.722
Yeah.

00:59:03.722 --> 00:59:14.838
Rewinds versus reviews, because again, it's more of a celebration and it's kind of a good time to not critique, but to like really just think about that movie.

00:59:14.838 --> 00:59:15.717
Sure.

00:59:15.878 --> 00:59:22.661
And I got to say, as as a 4K, as somebody who buys a lot of Blu-rays, I don't buy a lot of 4K.

00:59:22.661 --> 00:59:24.686
I will buy if it's something very special.

00:59:24.686 --> 00:59:33.465
I did buy the 4K release, the one they just released a couple days ago, during March.

00:59:33.525 --> 00:59:35.786
I think it was an anniversary, I believe so.

00:59:36.465 --> 00:59:38.565
And I was wowed by it.

00:59:38.565 --> 00:59:43.686
It did feel more crisp, which normally I'm like, it doesn't fucking matter for animated movies.

00:59:43.686 --> 00:59:49.085
How much more crisp can you get in animation, especially if it's hand drawn.

00:59:49.085 --> 00:59:50.405
But it does matter.

00:59:50.405 --> 00:59:52.545
It matters with the sound, it matters with.

00:59:52.545 --> 00:59:57.550
the colors, it matters with how it's conveyed like on that platform and on that in that format.

00:59:57.550 --> 01:00:05.356
However, I will tell you this, I did decide to A, when I got the the the steel book, there was a dent in it because of how Amazon shipped it.

01:00:06.056 --> 01:00:10.460
So I went to return it and then I thought to myself, wait a second.

01:00:10.460 --> 01:00:13.273
And so I was like, I did the return, but I was like, I got it.

01:00:13.273 --> 01:00:13.994
Might as well watch it.

01:00:13.994 --> 01:00:15.125
So I started watching it.

01:00:15.125 --> 01:00:21.530
And then I realized upon putting this brand new Blu-ray 4K into the DVD or into my PS5.

01:00:22.572 --> 01:00:24.543
There's no extra features.

01:00:25.005 --> 01:00:25.827
Yeah.

01:00:27.373 --> 01:00:29.634
And I'm like, I really was.

01:00:29.634 --> 01:00:34.373
And normally again, I wouldn't really look for extra or additional features because there was done.

01:00:34.373 --> 01:00:35.373
That was the second thing.

01:00:35.373 --> 01:00:36.253
I was like, fuck this.

01:00:36.253 --> 01:00:37.173
I'm sending it back.

01:00:37.173 --> 01:00:39.974
I will wait for another one to come out.

01:00:39.974 --> 01:00:44.554
That is like excellent looking that has features that cause like, that's the thing.

01:00:44.554 --> 01:00:48.934
This is a movie that they have additional features, places that you can find in older DVDs.

01:00:48.934 --> 01:00:49.693
Why not on this one?

01:00:49.693 --> 01:00:50.833
It makes no sense.

01:00:50.833 --> 01:00:51.659
So was like, fuck this.

01:00:51.659 --> 01:01:07.722
Yeah, if there's an entry to have just a cornucopia of bonus features and commentaries and behind the scenes and retrospectives and all the things like concept art, trailers, all the things Akira has to be like among some of the best.

01:01:07.722 --> 01:01:15.873
This movie is so studied, you know, among again, not only just manga fans, anime fans, but again, just movie fans in general.

01:01:15.873 --> 01:01:18.807
and they should be celebrating the production team.

01:01:18.807 --> 01:01:19.402
Correct.

01:01:19.402 --> 01:01:21.230
Because again, they were worked to death.

01:01:21.342 --> 01:01:23.509
Yeah.

01:01:23.509 --> 01:01:33.682
Let's get the composer because again, as I've really quick, if I can't say just to build off the, you know, working them to death, the film's color palette has three hundred twenty seven colors in total.

01:01:33.682 --> 01:01:37.898
Akira's animators actually invented 50 new completely unique colors for this movie.

01:01:37.898 --> 01:01:44.302
So they could create a whole crayon palette of colors for this movie.

01:01:44.302 --> 01:01:47.253
That's an extra large crayon box.

01:01:47.253 --> 01:01:53.146
You know, the one that came with the array like the not the eraser, but like the back of it.

01:01:53.146 --> 01:01:55.648
Like, that's how big this fucking box of new colors would be.

01:01:55.648 --> 01:01:56.148
Right.

01:01:56.148 --> 01:01:57.998
But one thing I want to talk about, let's talk about the composer.

01:01:57.998 --> 01:01:58.849
Yeah.

01:01:58.849 --> 01:02:12.056
And I guess I don't know if you feel the same way I do, but the music for this film, the sound, the music, whether it's whether it's just ambient music in the background or if it's like the again, it's like Canadian theme.

01:02:12.056 --> 01:02:12.757
Right.

01:02:12.757 --> 01:02:20.498
You know, is just it's unique, is iconic, and it is gorgeous.

01:02:20.639 --> 01:02:24.902
If you ever get a chance to listen to it on vinyl, I highly recommend it.

01:02:24.902 --> 01:02:37.007
But the score draws heavily from traditional Indonesian gamelan and Japanese note music, which is from, I'm going click on this link and I'm pretty sure, A game alone is a lot of percussion.

01:02:37.007 --> 01:02:37.588
It's a lot of.

01:02:37.588 --> 01:02:40.760
it's Yeah, it's drums.

01:02:40.760 --> 01:02:42.994
You've got like a lot of flutes.

01:02:42.994 --> 01:02:46.677
You get like a lot of bowed instruments in this as well.

01:02:46.717 --> 01:02:49.581
And a lot of that, again, is seen sort of in the cityscape scenes.

01:02:49.581 --> 01:02:51.559
You see you hear a lot of that.

01:02:51.559 --> 01:02:58.338
It was also composed by Shoji Yamashiro and performed by Gaino Yamashirogumi.

01:02:58.668 --> 01:03:04.043
My findings and everyone listening right now, if you can email us, reach out to us on social media.

01:03:04.043 --> 01:03:06.344
I could not find out lot about either one of these folks.

01:03:06.344 --> 01:03:11.719
It seems like this is the only work that they've done or at least the only like seriously notable.

01:03:11.719 --> 01:03:12.599
And I mean that respectfully.

01:03:12.599 --> 01:03:16.543
It seems like the Akira is like the only thing that they've really put out.

01:03:16.543 --> 01:03:18.534
So again, it's iconic.

01:03:18.534 --> 01:03:19.476
It's incredible.

01:03:19.476 --> 01:03:22.579
And they were part of this restoration that I got for my 4k.

01:03:22.579 --> 01:03:31.494
You see a lot of behind the scenes stuff where that shows them coming in and converting their soundtrack over into the 4k Dolby edition.

01:03:31.494 --> 01:03:37.534
went from, I want to say it was like 3.3 to 5.4 Dolby for this movie.

01:03:37.653 --> 01:03:39.846
and you can, can, again, you can tell.

01:03:40.012 --> 01:03:42.164
It looks like they have a lot of albums.

01:03:42.565 --> 01:03:45.788
The Gaino, Yama, Shiragumi.

01:03:46.128 --> 01:03:54.423
Like they're a musical collective and they seem to have done a lot of albums, but this is really the only soundtrack that they've done.

01:03:54.423 --> 01:03:54.715
Sure.

01:03:54.715 --> 01:03:55.047
Okay.

01:03:55.047 --> 01:03:58.434
Like, like Daft Punk in a way, like they've done one score.

01:03:59.094 --> 01:04:04.101
You showed me earlier a Blu-ray that you watched it.

01:04:04.101 --> 01:04:05.101
Can I see that one more time?

01:04:05.101 --> 01:04:07.735
And is this the anniversary one that you watched it on?

01:04:07.735 --> 01:04:10.266
So this is just the first edition 4K.

01:04:10.266 --> 01:04:13.268
I'm holding it for Aaron, everybody in the camera.

01:04:13.268 --> 01:04:16.190
And basically this was released in 2019.

01:04:16.190 --> 01:04:22.074
It comes with a really cool sort of info book that has a bunch of interviews with the entire creative team.

01:04:22.074 --> 01:04:25.217
And then you have the 4K here with a bonus cover.

01:04:25.217 --> 01:04:29.418
And then on the inside, it comes with the 4K, which is just the movie, like you said.

01:04:29.418 --> 01:04:33.240
It comes with a Blu-ray edition and it comes with a Blu-ray bonus feature.

01:04:33.240 --> 01:04:34.606
It came with a...

01:04:34.606 --> 01:04:39.733
trailers, came with some commentary, it came with some behind the scenes for the music and the animators.

01:04:39.733 --> 01:04:46.242
And then it came with something else that I wasn't able to watch, but, and it comes with all three editions of dub and sub.

01:04:46.242 --> 01:04:48.876
So one sub and then two dubs.

01:04:48.992 --> 01:04:55.563
See, I thought that you actually had the same one that I did because that's the same exact artwork that is on the steel book.

01:04:55.563 --> 01:04:56.679
Okay, interesting.

01:04:56.679 --> 01:04:57.833
I would recommend getting this version.

01:04:57.833 --> 01:04:58.405
I loved it.

01:04:58.405 --> 01:04:58.882
Yeah.

01:04:58.882 --> 01:04:59.202
I see.

01:04:59.202 --> 01:05:05.048
And that's, would recommend it also because I would rather have, instead of the steel book, I would rather have something like this.

01:05:05.048 --> 01:05:11.956
Again, something that's worth celebrating all of that background, all of that behind the scenes and features and things like that.

01:05:12.110 --> 01:05:15.362
Real quick, slight tangent, if I can say, I don't really care about steel books.

01:05:15.362 --> 01:05:27.059
I know you like steel books a little bit, but like in terms of my collection, I have very few steel books because they don't really offer that much different from your normal 4K or Blu-ray, but they're always more expensive.

01:05:27.059 --> 01:05:28.259
And I just don't understand it.

01:05:28.259 --> 01:05:30.141
It's like variants in comics.

01:05:30.141 --> 01:05:32.402
I sort of the appeal of.

01:05:32.402 --> 01:05:34.322
them used if they're good quality.

01:05:34.322 --> 01:05:35.161
I'll go to like again.

01:05:35.161 --> 01:05:48.242
used to tell you about my adventures at McKay's, you know where I'd go and buy a bunch of and that's all mostly what the first thing I would do would go to their new arrival section and see what steel books they got in because the steel books were roughly the same price, right as the normal ones.

01:05:48.242 --> 01:05:57.942
But I'm glad to see that, you know, again, there are certain times where yes, you get more for your money, more bang for your buck when you don't get the steel book like I made the mistake of doing.

01:05:57.942 --> 01:05:59.702
But like I said, I sent it back.

01:05:59.702 --> 01:06:01.518
But the music for the film was completed.

01:06:01.518 --> 01:06:06.958
before any of the composers actually saw a single frame of the film or even read the script.

01:06:06.958 --> 01:06:08.173
Can you believe that?

01:06:08.173 --> 01:06:09.215
It's interesting.

01:06:09.215 --> 01:06:20.487
Again, on the surface that feels extremely odd, but I think with having, you know, the director also being the creator of the manga as well, he was like, Hey folks, just read the manga.

01:06:20.487 --> 01:06:21.422
All right.

01:06:21.902 --> 01:06:24.684
This is, it's going to be that in some form, right?

01:06:24.684 --> 01:06:26.304
So just do that.

01:06:28.376 --> 01:06:28.690
gosh.

01:06:28.690 --> 01:06:28.880
Yeah.

01:06:28.880 --> 01:06:29.317
Here we go.

01:06:29.317 --> 01:06:31.588
Aaron, I'm going leave this completely in your hands.

01:06:31.588 --> 01:06:33.789
You know, this is generally your section anyway.

01:06:33.880 --> 01:06:36.347
I'll read the Japanese voice actor and you can read it.

01:06:36.347 --> 01:06:36.782
Everybody.

01:06:36.782 --> 01:06:41.141
I'll do, yeah, I'll do the, 2001 Pioneer Dub.

01:06:41.141 --> 01:06:41.621
How about that?

01:06:41.621 --> 01:06:42.061
Okay.

01:06:42.061 --> 01:06:42.842
Sounds good.

01:06:42.842 --> 01:06:44.923
We'll go down the cast.

01:06:44.923 --> 01:06:46.161
I'll read again.

01:06:46.161 --> 01:06:49.445
I'm just going to go down the Japanese voice actors and who they played.

01:06:49.445 --> 01:06:53.047
So Kaneda was Mitsuo Iwata.

01:06:53.047 --> 01:06:56.128
Tetsuo Ushima was Nozomu Sasaki.

01:06:56.128 --> 01:06:58.909
Kei was Mami Koyama.

01:06:58.909 --> 01:07:01.731
Colonel Shikishima was Taro Ishida.

01:07:01.911 --> 01:07:06.913
Ryu, it was Ryu Saku, but Ryu was Tetsuo Genda.

01:07:06.913 --> 01:07:07.514
Dr.

01:07:07.514 --> 01:07:08.449
Onishi.

01:07:08.449 --> 01:07:15.351
was Mizuho Suzuki Takashi, which was number 26, Tatsuhiko Nakamura, Kiyoko was number 25.

01:07:15.351 --> 01:07:24.737
She's the one that could see the future, was Fuku Ito and Masaru, who's kind of like the little guy and like, he looks like a little blue Trump in a floating wheelchair.

01:07:24.737 --> 01:07:25.684
So was wrong earlier.

01:07:25.684 --> 01:07:27.943
I think it actually was 26 was the boy.

01:07:27.943 --> 01:07:28.802
Yeah.

01:07:28.802 --> 01:07:46.197
Kazuhiro Shindo, Kaori who is, you know, works with Ryu, Yuriko Fujisaki, Yamagata was Masaki Okura, Kai Takeshi Kusou, and Nezu was Hiroshi Otake.

01:07:46.338 --> 01:07:52.599
I love two minds here because sometimes I prefer the sub and sometimes I prefer the dub.

01:07:52.599 --> 01:07:57.291
Maybe I'm a dirty dubber here and people don't like that as like true anime fans.

01:07:57.291 --> 01:08:01.733
But I think for this one, I've always just really liked the 2001 dub.

01:08:01.733 --> 01:08:02.773
That's the one I've always known.

01:08:02.773 --> 01:08:06.594
And I'm not saying that you shouldn't try the other versions.

01:08:06.594 --> 01:08:10.264
Like Aaron loves the 2000, I'm sorry, the 1989 dub.

01:08:10.264 --> 01:08:13.057
But and I might even, I should watch it honestly, just to see if.

01:08:13.057 --> 01:08:15.898
was gonna ask if you don't mind doing that and letting me know what you think.

01:08:15.898 --> 01:08:24.837
No rush now, but I would love to hear your, especially as a filthy casual from 2001, I'd love to hear your opinion on that.

01:08:24.837 --> 01:08:35.537
Now that's the other thing that was kind of disappointing though was the 2001 dubbing is a, was it 5.1 Dolby sound?

01:08:36.653 --> 01:08:37.809
They were able to convert it.

01:08:37.809 --> 01:08:38.613
Yes, I apologize.

01:08:38.613 --> 01:08:40.219
So yes, they were able to convert it.

01:08:40.247 --> 01:08:45.631
But the 88 or 89 version is only like the 2.8.

01:08:45.631 --> 01:08:49.603
So you don't get the high definition sound like you do with a newer one.

01:08:49.603 --> 01:08:55.662
So that's the only unfortunate is you sacrifice something into having a preference or not having a preference.

01:08:55.662 --> 01:08:58.341
Now I'm just going to go down in order to like save my own embarrassment.

01:08:58.341 --> 01:09:02.622
I'm just going to go down the line for the 1989 and the 2001 dubbings here.

01:09:02.822 --> 01:09:18.202
So Cam Clark, Jan Rabson, Laura Cody, Tony Pope, Steve Kramer, Lewis Arquette, Barbara Goodson, Melora Hart, Bob Bergen, Barbara Goodson, Tony Pope, Bob Berger and Mike Reynolds were all part of that 1989 dub.

01:09:18.202 --> 01:09:23.421
And then going into the 2001 again, this is my version, Johnny Young Bosch, Josh.

01:09:23.662 --> 01:09:37.021
Yeah, Joshua Seth, Wendy Lee, Jameson Price, Bob Burchals, Simon Prescott, Cody McKenzie, Sandy Fox, Travis Weaver, Michelle Rove, Michael Lindsay and Tony Pope.

01:09:37.021 --> 01:09:41.542
Tony Pope only wanted to premiere in both the 1989 and the 2001.

01:09:41.561 --> 01:09:49.381
So in 89, he was Colonel Shikishima in the 1989 version and in the 2001 version, is Nezuku or Nezu.

01:09:49.387 --> 01:09:50.899
Yeah, yeah, something like that.

01:09:50.899 --> 01:09:51.220
All right.

01:09:51.220 --> 01:10:00.524
So anyway, the name of Tetsuo literally means Iron Man in Japanese, a foreshadowing for the indestructible powers and metallic body parts he eventually acquires.

01:10:00.524 --> 01:10:12.578
Which is funny because if you think back to the monkey review that we did with good friend of the show, Erica Fett, I brought up a movie because I like, you I wasn't kind of testing her on her her imported horror films.

01:10:12.578 --> 01:10:15.460
And I brought up a movie called Tetsuo the Iron Man.

01:10:16.560 --> 01:10:20.363
that's that's kind of interesting where that that lies also the name.

01:10:20.363 --> 01:10:25.560
Aaron, I want you to read this next bit because I think you would appreciate it more than anybody.

01:10:25.601 --> 01:10:33.829
Yeah, the computer sounds, which you you heard when they're doing that really cool body scan in like three dimensions for Tetsuo.

01:10:33.829 --> 01:10:38.670
Those sounds were actually taken from the mother computer in Alien from 1979.

01:10:38.670 --> 01:10:40.470
Yeah, that's pretty incredible.

01:10:41.050 --> 01:10:47.670
So in the riot scene, Kai pushes past a man wearing a sweater bearing the word young as the reference to Young magazine.

01:10:47.670 --> 01:10:53.090
It was a bimonthly comic anthology series that the original Akira manga was serialized in.

01:10:53.090 --> 01:10:58.449
Akira first appeared in issue 236 from November 21st, 1988.

01:10:58.850 --> 01:11:06.862
OK, and then the last thing we'll cover here is the multiple failed attempts at doing this thing in live action, which I will be on record of saying, hey, don't do that.

01:11:06.862 --> 01:11:07.645
Jesus.

01:11:08.024 --> 01:11:09.115
So let's get into that.

01:11:09.115 --> 01:11:16.087
we have our live action adaptation of Akira has been stuck in development hell for years, the first being Sony Pictures in the 1990s.

01:11:16.087 --> 01:11:18.457
And now it's in development hell with Warner Brothers.

01:11:18.457 --> 01:11:23.283
More fan made versions of Tetsuo's or excuse me, Kaneda's motorcycle.

01:11:23.283 --> 01:11:23.662
Yeah.

01:11:23.662 --> 01:11:24.033
Yup.

01:11:24.033 --> 01:11:30.448
Come to completion and fruition over the many failures of just trying to get this fucking movie made.

01:11:30.862 --> 01:11:33.689
Real quick, before I get into who's been attached to these, do you want that?

01:11:33.689 --> 01:11:37.278
Would you like, would you be excited for a live action Akira?

01:11:37.750 --> 01:11:38.489
God.

01:11:38.489 --> 01:11:39.451
okay.

01:11:39.931 --> 01:11:42.474
Yeah.

01:11:43.114 --> 01:11:52.532
Maybe, it's, it's, that's a very big, quite any, I say anybody that's an anime fan knows that like, that's a very hard, hard ask.

01:11:52.532 --> 01:11:59.528
Like at one point, Leonardo Leonardo DiCaprio was actually like a part of a project to develop it.

01:12:00.048 --> 01:12:17.878
And, and I want to say that that like, He's one of those guys who is like kind of like off the fucking wall with the stuff that he makes like and he's a part of but like I can imagine like somebody like Christopher Nolan and like Leonardo DiCaprio like doing something really good with this together because he they give a shit right now I am just so strongly against that.

01:12:17.878 --> 01:12:24.613
I think that this is This kind of story can only be told in the way that it's told in either manga or anime, right?

01:12:24.613 --> 01:12:54.987
It's it's like trying to do a live-action dragon ball movie Like I just I don't think we're there yet if ever and and I think the same thing about like watchmen part of the reason why I don't like the live-action walk watchmen movie For obvious reasons, but the main reason being is that it's a comic about comics, you know, like when you read watchmen as a comic it is a It's having a conversation with the reader about sort of the idea of being a comic reader and where it started in the golden age and where it is currently in the mid 1980s.

01:12:55.007 --> 01:12:57.604
And to adapt that into movie, you just lose so much of that.

01:12:57.604 --> 01:13:00.092
And that's part of the reason why it's such an iconic story.

01:13:00.092 --> 01:13:05.448
And I think again, with Akira, the budget would have to be $600 million to do it correctly.

01:13:05.793 --> 01:13:11.127
very much in the same vein as why Ready Player One didn't do so well.

01:13:11.127 --> 01:13:11.637
Sure.

01:13:11.637 --> 01:13:11.948
Yeah.

01:13:11.948 --> 01:13:14.511
Cause you're in, you're in the head of what's his name?

01:13:14.511 --> 01:13:15.761
Who's the main character?

01:13:17.042 --> 01:13:17.943
Watts, right?

01:13:17.943 --> 01:13:19.073
Wade Watts.

01:13:19.073 --> 01:13:19.725
Yeah.

01:13:19.725 --> 01:13:25.338
You have to be in your Wade's head throughout the book and he understands all these references in his head.

01:13:25.338 --> 01:13:32.595
He doesn't say them out loud where in the movie you have to either see them on camera or you have to, or he has to say them out loud.

01:13:32.595 --> 01:13:35.877
And it's just, it's a little much when you have to do that.

01:13:35.877 --> 01:13:42.072
So anyway, would say like, I don't know if you've seen it, but there's a show that was on Netflix.

01:13:42.072 --> 01:13:44.502
was like carbon something.

01:13:46.185 --> 01:13:54.751
He was in the second season and the guy who played in the original like Suicide Squad movie, the guy who played Rick Flagg.

01:13:54.751 --> 01:13:56.431
He was the first season.

01:13:56.431 --> 01:13:59.233
Altered Carbon is the name of the show, Altered Carbon.

01:13:59.373 --> 01:14:03.417
And that one is set in such an interesting, futuristic kind of universe.

01:14:03.417 --> 01:14:05.515
I could see whomever did that one.

01:14:05.515 --> 01:14:09.934
somewhat being successful with the scenery to a degree.

01:14:09.934 --> 01:14:13.533
If you're going to do this, you almost have to do it as a television series.

01:14:13.533 --> 01:14:13.913
Yeah.

01:14:13.913 --> 01:14:14.514
Right.

01:14:14.514 --> 01:14:16.913
You just need more time, especially if you're doing the manga.

01:14:16.913 --> 01:14:20.974
I think the same thing of like, they keep talking about doing a live action game of Thrones.

01:14:21.474 --> 01:14:22.533
Don't stop.

01:14:22.533 --> 01:14:27.493
Like it's good as a TV series and you need more time to understand the dynamics of these characters.

01:14:28.533 --> 01:14:29.033
Yeah.

01:14:29.033 --> 01:14:30.033
They want to, sorry.

01:14:30.033 --> 01:14:32.934
When I say live action, guess I mean movie, like a movie.

01:14:33.234 --> 01:14:33.694
Yeah.

01:14:33.694 --> 01:14:34.573
In terms of live action.

01:14:34.573 --> 01:14:34.694
Yeah.

01:14:34.694 --> 01:14:38.923
You can do it on television and you can do it pretty well apparently, but in terms of a movie.

01:14:38.923 --> 01:14:45.029
That's tough unless it's like a conclusion or like a some kind of build off of the television series, then it could possibly work.

01:14:45.144 --> 01:14:57.542
Well, back to this, said the ones that have been attached to the live action Akira film are Steve, Steven Norrington, who directed Blade, Gary Witta, Rogue One writer.

01:14:57.542 --> 01:14:59.623
I love the sequel to that movie, the way.

01:15:00.385 --> 01:15:02.556
Jordan Peele, who did Get Out and Nope.

01:15:02.556 --> 01:15:04.027
Like Jordan Peele.

01:15:04.828 --> 01:15:06.073
I don't know if I get that guy.

01:15:06.073 --> 01:15:09.344
I don't know if I get, I love his- just likes things and he wants to make those things.

01:15:09.344 --> 01:15:11.155
That's the way I see him.

01:15:11.746 --> 01:15:14.060
George Miller of the Mad Max franchise.

01:15:14.060 --> 01:15:16.171
I don't see that one working out very well.

01:15:17.034 --> 01:15:23.604
And then Taika Watiti who fucked up a couple of Thor movies, but Thor Ragnarok.

01:15:23.917 --> 01:15:25.818
One movie one is good.

01:15:25.818 --> 01:15:41.518
One is bad and thunder love and thunder is bad And that one is like the most recent that's the one that Warner Brothers has been touting since like 2019 and it's been on definite hold since then so I would imagine that Tyke is probably not interested in doing anymore and I don't blame him and Of all of these people.

01:15:41.518 --> 01:15:42.717
I love Jordan Peele.

01:15:42.717 --> 01:15:44.137
George Miller is a legend, right?

01:15:44.137 --> 01:15:45.137
I like the blade movie.

01:15:45.137 --> 01:15:50.518
Take a what td is good outside of love and thunder I just there's no one that you could attach this to and I go wow.

01:15:50.518 --> 01:15:54.753
I'm I'm excited now like I think Akira is so important.

01:15:54.753 --> 01:15:59.194
And I think in order to do it correctly, you almost have to do it as a television series.

01:15:59.194 --> 01:16:01.354
And I still think that's a bad idea.

01:16:01.533 --> 01:16:02.314
Right.

01:16:02.974 --> 01:16:08.814
So anyway, that sounds like a bad note to end on, but that's kind of the conclusion of our conversation with Akira.

01:16:09.054 --> 01:16:10.313
Aaron, final thoughts on Akira.

01:16:10.313 --> 01:16:14.894
Again, I feel like we didn't talk a ton about the plot because people that are listening to this, I hope have already checked it out.

01:16:14.894 --> 01:16:19.213
For some reason you haven't again, shame on you, but hopefully this excited you.

01:16:19.213 --> 01:16:23.329
I think the main takeaway that I should give is go read the manga as well, you know.

01:16:23.329 --> 01:16:24.961
But again, I'm gonna pass it off to you.

01:16:24.961 --> 01:16:26.908
Final thoughts on Akira the film.

01:16:27.021 --> 01:16:35.787
So I'm going to go on a little bit of a tangent here because I want to go through my notes, which I'll go through quickly because we hit a lot of it during the the the re.

01:16:35.787 --> 01:16:37.671
Are these notes that you made while watching the film?

01:16:37.671 --> 01:16:38.002
Yes.

01:16:38.002 --> 01:16:38.918
Okay, gotcha.

01:16:38.918 --> 01:16:39.942
Love doing that.

01:16:40.954 --> 01:16:49.730
So again, I think I said earlier, this is the first time that an animated film has really like wowed me for being in 4k, the colors, the animation, the music, it all just seemed a little bit crisper.

01:16:49.730 --> 01:16:53.268
And it was all just again, 160 cells, Aaron.

01:16:53.268 --> 01:16:54.014
Yeah.

01:16:54.014 --> 01:16:59.015
Maybe it's just the fact of like every time I watch it, I'm instantly just taken back to the first time I see it.

01:16:59.015 --> 01:17:01.155
And it's such a journey.

01:17:01.155 --> 01:17:04.534
And like my next note actually says, I've seen this movie countless times.

01:17:04.534 --> 01:17:06.528
I've read the manga all the way through multiple times.

01:17:06.528 --> 01:17:11.378
And every time it catches me off guard and grabs my attention for the first from the first moment.

01:17:11.378 --> 01:17:11.939
Yeah.

01:17:11.939 --> 01:17:16.130
So like that's that's that would be if any if I had a final that I'll leave that at it.

01:17:16.130 --> 01:17:19.600
But I talked about the Akira slide.

01:17:19.600 --> 01:17:22.131
I asked myself, what you call this cyberpunk?

01:17:22.189 --> 01:17:24.609
I talked about which dubbing I prefer.

01:17:24.630 --> 01:17:28.270
When the kid screams in the 88 version, it still gives me goosebumps.

01:17:28.270 --> 01:17:31.489
I don't know why I wrote disappointing that this is 4K.

01:17:31.489 --> 01:17:33.789
I don't know why I wrote that for some reason.

01:17:35.609 --> 01:17:36.390
That would have to come to you.

01:17:36.390 --> 01:17:36.890
I don't know why.

01:17:36.890 --> 01:17:38.689
Maybe that was a typo or something.

01:17:38.829 --> 01:17:42.789
But yeah, and then again, the pronunciation of Canada versus Canada.

01:17:42.789 --> 01:17:49.890
And then again, like I told you at the beginning of the show, reached out, I don't know if I said this on the show, but I reached out to a couple of people that were important to me.

01:17:50.073 --> 01:17:56.917
first was, was Constantine who again, it's been like, you know, my best friend since, not more than bikes.

01:17:56.918 --> 01:17:57.779
Huh?

01:17:58.800 --> 01:17:59.881
no, not here.

01:17:59.881 --> 01:18:04.993
Like you, you guys are our best friends in different aspects and I love the guy forever.

01:18:04.993 --> 01:18:06.845
He will forever be a best friend.

01:18:06.845 --> 01:18:09.788
And so will you like Beth, you know, Not better than me.

01:18:09.788 --> 01:18:12.681
Let's just clarify that for the listener because I know they're worried.

01:18:12.681 --> 01:18:16.855
Like they care a lot and I just think everyone should know that Aaron does not.

01:18:16.855 --> 01:18:19.046
Might have to fight it out like Joker style.

01:18:19.528 --> 01:18:27.756
But he said he's always had a deep appreciation for Akira as it continues to feel ahead of its time, both in its groundbreaking musical score and lasting influence.

01:18:27.756 --> 01:18:32.979
The gritty Deus Ex Machina like atmosphere is something he absolutely loves.

01:18:33.000 --> 01:18:39.645
It's another anime masterpiece in the same league as if you've ever seen a Rogen Z, which is a really popular one as well.

01:18:39.645 --> 01:18:44.069
To this day, just mentioning, and you might get to now.

01:18:44.257 --> 01:18:49.771
Twin ceramic rotor drives is enough to bring a knowing smile to anyone who sees it.

01:18:49.771 --> 01:18:51.002
And if you know, you know.

01:18:51.002 --> 01:18:58.637
And then the other person was a, you know, was one of our, Patreon, our programs, ham six, who, he's a good dude.

01:18:58.637 --> 01:19:05.112
Like he and I talk quite often, you know, if I, he's asked me for things, like if I go to a convention, like I'll, you know, I'll look for something and vice versa.

01:19:05.112 --> 01:19:06.262
Like he's just a good dude.

01:19:06.262 --> 01:19:07.554
Ham six is just a good dude.

01:19:07.554 --> 01:19:13.229
And so he sent me his thoughts over and he talked about how, you know, he was impressed with it, like the 3d animation effects.

01:19:13.229 --> 01:19:19.813
you know, striking contrast between bright colors and intense violence, kind of comparing it to Tarantino and Kubrick style.

01:19:19.813 --> 01:19:25.854
He believes the iconic bike scene may have influenced even the Road Rash video game series, which would make total sense.

01:19:25.854 --> 01:19:34.458
He praised the background art for its intricate detail, layering the violence against students in the early scenes reflects, you know, the era storytelling rather than modern sensibility.

01:19:34.458 --> 01:19:36.448
So it's kind of very true to its era.

01:19:36.448 --> 01:19:42.988
then he's called them the creepy three blue children representing different perspectives on knowing the future.

01:19:42.988 --> 01:19:45.500
some hesitant, some blindly following it.

01:19:45.500 --> 01:19:52.786
And then overall, you know, he's inspired yet kind of confused, eager to rewatch it multiple times to fully grasp it.

01:19:52.907 --> 01:19:58.310
And he just like wanted to emphasize the groundbreaking visuals, particularly the bikes and the light trails.

01:19:58.310 --> 01:20:06.779
And, you know, he's always like, he's always excited to hear more, more like discussion, like from us on like how it impacts like the anime scene.

01:20:06.779 --> 01:20:10.783
And, you know, I just want to say thanks to Constantine, thanks to Hamsticks for.

01:20:10.783 --> 01:20:13.546
you know, letting me read that for getting, giving me your, your perspective on it.

01:20:13.546 --> 01:20:14.305
Appreciate that.

01:20:14.305 --> 01:20:20.079
Love hearing from people that, that actually give a shit about what we're talking about and want to have a piece of the conversation.

01:20:20.079 --> 01:20:27.185
So I invite people, like if you have something that we're about to talk about, feel free to send it to us over on our Patreon or on our social media accounts, wherever.

01:20:27.185 --> 01:20:28.716
It's awesome to hear from you about it.

01:20:28.716 --> 01:20:29.649
Yeah, absolutely.

01:20:29.649 --> 01:20:33.506
Did you mention that this was Ian's first time watching Akira as well?

01:20:33.506 --> 01:20:33.706
sorry.

01:20:33.706 --> 01:20:34.355
Yeah, didn't say that.

01:20:34.355 --> 01:20:40.011
was, yeah, it was, it was, actually asked him if he had watched it before and he's like, no, but I'll go home and give it a shot.

01:20:40.011 --> 01:20:41.020
And I was like, fuck yeah, man.

01:20:41.020 --> 01:20:41.502
That's awesome.

01:20:41.502 --> 01:20:42.992
So he was willing to it.

01:20:44.012 --> 01:20:45.173
Like, dude.

01:20:45.948 --> 01:20:46.288
All right.

01:20:46.288 --> 01:20:50.150
So my final thoughts on Akira are it's just one of the best of all time.

01:20:50.150 --> 01:20:59.278
Everybody that seems so boilerplate and Chris, like, of course we all know that, but I don't think it makes it any less impactful even though it's obvious.

01:20:59.278 --> 01:20:59.528
Right.

01:20:59.528 --> 01:21:06.582
Like Akira there's again, I said earlier, it's there's only one and to watch this movie, like this is the best that we can do.

01:21:06.582 --> 01:21:10.921
I honestly believe that like there are some times you watch a movie, you listen to a song.

01:21:10.921 --> 01:21:17.207
You know, you watch a television series, you read a comic, all these things, and you think it just cannot be better than this.

01:21:17.207 --> 01:21:18.828
And that's a Kira for anime.

01:21:18.828 --> 01:21:27.033
In my opinion, again, and you can you roast me or you can tell me that I'm wrong, but I just I firmly believe that this is the top of the mountain in terms of anime.

01:21:27.033 --> 01:21:30.856
And you can make a strong argument for manga as well, even though, again, I'm not as versed in that.

01:21:30.856 --> 01:21:36.641
I'm not I'm not as versed in either one of these things, but I just when you see something like this, it's incredible.

01:21:36.641 --> 01:21:37.452
So.

01:21:37.645 --> 01:21:43.185
There are some incredibly badass scenes in the manga versus the film.

01:21:43.185 --> 01:22:06.926
Like at one point, again, I would say you don't see this in the movie, but there's like this part in the manga where the world is trying to, before Tetsuo, who is just exponentially more powerful in the anime than he, or in the manga than he's in anime, before he can attack the rest of the world, like the rest of the world kind of converges on what's left of Japan.

01:22:06.926 --> 01:22:07.985
to take him out.

01:22:07.985 --> 01:22:15.265
And at one point he literally like morphs with like an F16 or F14 and just starts like fucking shit up.

01:22:15.265 --> 01:22:18.025
It is so insane.

01:22:18.025 --> 01:22:18.786
the shit that it ends.

01:22:18.786 --> 01:22:28.525
Like again, you know, we talk about how much we love or how much I love Daniel Warren Johnson's artwork because it's so kinetic and it's so in that same vein as Tomo's art.

01:22:29.025 --> 01:22:43.865
And again, like this, reading through these more, again, visceral kinetic and just violent scenes in this this manga, you can see where his love and where his inspiration come from for for DWJ.

01:22:43.865 --> 01:22:58.689
So again, there's just if you've never seen it and you have no desire to watch an anime, but you love comics simply pop this in just so you can see where people's interests and inspirations have come from because it's such an experience.

01:22:58.689 --> 01:23:01.440
Yeah, I would honestly alter that even slightly more.

01:23:01.440 --> 01:23:09.333
I would say if you have no interest in anime or if you have no interest in manga, I would say give Akira the first shot.

01:23:09.333 --> 01:23:15.396
If this is your very first time experiencing either one of those mediums Akira on film Akira and manga form.

01:23:15.396 --> 01:23:24.130
I honestly think that'll make you a believer just in those two iterations and that's like, yeah, I mean, you know, your mileage may vary.

01:23:24.130 --> 01:23:25.761
I'm not a big believer in censoring kids.

01:23:25.761 --> 01:23:26.581
Like I don't have kids.

01:23:26.581 --> 01:23:28.300
So maybe it's easy for me to sit atop.

01:23:28.300 --> 01:23:32.032
my single mountain and say, stop telling those kids not to say fuck.

01:23:32.032 --> 01:23:39.194
But like, I think eventually if and when I have kids, I'm going to show them things like this, but with me there to contextualize it.

01:23:39.194 --> 01:23:40.515
Yeah.

01:23:40.515 --> 01:23:45.268
As the baby is coming out of the womb, it'll be Tetsuo combining with a machine.

01:23:45.268 --> 01:23:46.148
Yeah.

01:23:46.148 --> 01:23:48.760
All right.

01:23:48.760 --> 01:23:53.560
Aaron, just for shits and giggles, if you were to give this thing out of five David Winers, what would you give it?

01:23:53.561 --> 01:23:56.278
I'd probably give it a 4.5.

01:23:57.229 --> 01:23:58.069
Yeah, it's a five.

01:23:58.069 --> 01:24:00.810
mean, I think it's like one of the easiest fives of all time for me.

01:24:00.829 --> 01:24:03.710
This is the top 15 movie for me of all time.

01:24:03.710 --> 01:24:07.130
I'd say it's like it's somewhere in that 10 to 12 range.

01:24:07.229 --> 01:24:08.630
All right.

01:24:08.630 --> 01:24:17.350
Typical Chris giving out fives like they're nothing, even though we've been on the show for five years and I've given out to everybody that'll do it for a midnight rewind.

01:24:17.350 --> 01:24:22.369
Next week on the show, we are being joined by two absolute giants in the medium.

01:24:22.369 --> 01:24:27.470
This is like still mind blowing to me that we were able to get them not only get one of them on, but both of them.

01:24:27.470 --> 01:24:35.335
Matt Fraction and Michael Allred joined us on the show to talk about their brand new issue number one of Welcome to Twilight over at Dark Horse Comics.

01:24:35.335 --> 01:24:38.359
Again, good friends of the show, Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum.

01:24:38.359 --> 01:24:56.018
They have continued to bring in some of the best talent in the comic world over into the Minor Threats universe and the conversation that we have with both Matt Fraction who recently not only worked on the Legacy of Monsters Apple TV Plus show that Aaron absolutely loves, But he also is going to be the upcoming writer on Batman.

01:24:56.018 --> 01:25:00.850
Number one coming up in September with the sexiest man in comics, Jorge Jimenez.

01:25:00.850 --> 01:25:06.735
And then of course, know, no introduction needed for Michael already.

01:25:06.735 --> 01:25:09.778
The guy is just one of the singular voices in comics.

01:25:09.778 --> 01:25:19.045
Like, and I think if I'm going to promote him in any major way, it's the fact that he drew one of my favorite runs of all time, which is his and Dan Slott's 2013 Silver Surfer run.

01:25:19.045 --> 01:25:20.845
So coming up next week.

01:25:20.845 --> 01:25:22.126
Check it out.

01:25:22.126 --> 01:25:24.518
Aaron, do have anything you want to say to everyone before we head out of here?

01:25:25.166 --> 01:25:31.286
I'm going to say it in a second, go buy some fucking buy some fucking merch.

01:25:31.286 --> 01:25:32.746
I'm showing like right now.

01:25:32.746 --> 01:25:33.786
You can't see it very well.

01:25:33.786 --> 01:25:38.706
Maybe, maybe we can take a screenshot or something, but I bought a new oblivion bar.

01:25:39.565 --> 01:25:40.485
It's not pink.

01:25:40.485 --> 01:25:44.445
It's like a, it's like a Heather red meal.

01:25:44.445 --> 01:25:45.725
It's like Heather red.

01:25:45.725 --> 01:25:47.185
It's like, it's so soft.

01:25:47.185 --> 01:25:52.782
And then I've been, I've been talking, uh, like saying this on the show so much, but I was like, I'm going to get me one of those.

01:25:52.782 --> 01:25:54.449
tie-dye Oblivion bar shirts.

01:25:54.449 --> 01:25:57.518
And look how fucking good the colors look on this thing.

01:25:57.518 --> 01:25:58.519
That's awesome.

01:25:58.541 --> 01:25:58.770
Yeah.

01:25:58.770 --> 01:26:01.747
That's all in our, that's in our show notes and we'll talk about it here in a moment.

01:26:03.275 --> 01:26:04.547
It looks so good.

01:26:04.547 --> 01:26:11.847
I thought it was going to look like ass, but it looks so I've never owned a tie dye shirt before, but this thing is fucking like the tits, man.

01:26:11.847 --> 01:26:12.229
All right.

01:26:12.229 --> 01:26:13.292
Well, it's no cap.

01:26:13.292 --> 01:26:16.344
No cap for Schizel.

01:26:17.386 --> 01:26:19.347
Riz on fleek.

01:26:19.347 --> 01:26:22.390
Aaron, all right, take us out of here before we make up more.
