00:00:05.838 --> 00:00:09.317
As with the original series, various comic book storylines were adapted for the revival.

00:00:09.317 --> 00:00:14.907
The original animated series was primarily influenced by Chris Claremont's run of the comics from the mid 70s to the early 90s.

00:00:14.907 --> 00:00:21.478
X -Men 97 continues to adapt those stories from the era, as well as elements from later in the 90s and into Grant Morrison's new X -Men run.

00:00:21.478 --> 00:00:27.527
Now, first we have the trial of Magneto from Uncanny X -Men 200 from 1985 by Chris Claremont and John Romita Jr.

00:00:27.527 --> 00:00:29.437
This is adapted in the second episode.

00:00:29.437 --> 00:00:42.066
And I think as soon as we saw his outfit, you know, that giant purple You know, that very distinct Magneto outfit that he has wore literally never in any other part in history.

00:00:42.066 --> 00:00:45.345
We're like, OK, they're definitely doing the trial of Magneto.

00:00:45.345 --> 00:00:47.515
Yeah, they're like, let's show off his delts.

00:00:47.515 --> 00:00:49.966
You know, the biceps, the triceps.

00:00:49.966 --> 00:00:51.886
But but don't give them all the arms.

00:00:51.886 --> 00:00:52.506
All right.

00:00:52.506 --> 00:00:54.146
So you ever just imagine.

00:00:54.146 --> 00:00:59.066
OK, maybe I'm weird, but do you just ever imagine like these characters getting dressed in the morning?

00:00:59.277 --> 00:01:00.618
That is funny as shit.

00:01:00.618 --> 00:01:02.057
I've never heard of that.

00:01:02.057 --> 00:01:06.078
It's just like, he's like looking in the closet and he's like, do I want to wear the sleeves?

00:01:06.078 --> 00:01:07.658
Do I wear the sleeves or not the sleeves?

00:01:07.658 --> 00:01:08.067
Cape?

00:01:08.067 --> 00:01:09.117
No cape.

00:01:10.298 --> 00:01:13.278
I feel like this costume is made out of velour.

00:01:13.278 --> 00:01:16.367
I think it's like some crazy material, you know?

00:01:16.367 --> 00:01:25.097
So that's where my brain, I don't know what's wrong with me, but that's where even, even Bastion's like, I'm like, that's made out of crushed velvet.

00:01:25.097 --> 00:01:25.548
Yeah.

00:01:25.548 --> 00:01:26.578
It's like.

00:01:26.701 --> 00:01:29.621
This isn't regular H you know, bullshit cotton.

00:01:29.621 --> 00:01:33.441
Like this is they look like they're dressed to impress in the weirdest.

00:01:33.441 --> 00:01:38.441
Yeah, that is one thing I would say about Magneto early on is I was like, that is it.

00:01:38.441 --> 00:01:40.331
To me, that is like one of my least favorite costumes.

00:01:40.331 --> 00:01:48.981
So when he gets back in his like classic, you know, Jim Lee era, 90s, you know, his classic costume towards the end, I was like, yeah, finally.

00:01:48.981 --> 00:01:56.718
Well, and you know, speaking of crazy outfits that I have absolutely zero idea how they do it, how it works, the buoyancy, the everything, the material.

00:01:56.718 --> 00:02:07.328
In the third episode is a condensed version of the comic book crossover Inferno from 1989 written by Luis Simonson and Chris Claremont and drawn by Brett Blevins, Mark Salvestri and Walt Simonson.

00:02:07.328 --> 00:02:10.018
This, of course, is very Madeline Pryor, Mr.

00:02:10.018 --> 00:02:12.117
Sinister sort of inspired.

00:02:12.117 --> 00:02:17.978
So both of those costumes, if we're going to talk on it, you know, we've got Madeline Pryor, which is one of the horniest costumes in X -Men history.

00:02:17.978 --> 00:02:19.168
And then you have.

00:02:19.168 --> 00:02:19.937
Yeah, buddy.

00:02:19.937 --> 00:02:22.937
What are the what are these stringy capes that Mr.

00:02:22.937 --> 00:02:23.828
Sinister has behind Mr.

00:02:23.828 --> 00:02:25.102
Sinister had a full cape?

00:02:25.102 --> 00:02:28.102
But one day he got too close to a paper shredder.

00:02:28.301 --> 00:02:31.641
He managed to pull away before he got to him, but he was like, you know what?

00:02:31.641 --> 00:02:32.961
I think I'm going to rock this.

00:02:32.961 --> 00:02:39.562
He's got those old school, like some kind of like saber tooth tiger where he lives in his little dinosaur area.

00:02:39.741 --> 00:02:40.322
Yeah, it's Savage Land.

00:02:40.322 --> 00:02:41.581
Yeah, it's Savage Land.

00:02:41.581 --> 00:02:43.861
He just shredded it like it was some drapes.

00:02:43.861 --> 00:02:53.421
That's kind of where I think I started to really enjoy the series is because one of, speaking of daunting, one of the parts of the X -Men lore is the Madeline Pryor Jean Grey clone stuff.

00:02:53.421 --> 00:02:55.981
And that is such a blind spot for me because it is everywhere.

00:02:55.981 --> 00:02:59.822
And we'll get into it more with like Rachel Summers later in this conversation.

00:02:59.822 --> 00:03:04.222
But all of that is so crazy because it's time travel plus cloning.

00:03:04.222 --> 00:03:07.542
And Claremont, not only his horniness, but he loves time travel.

00:03:07.542 --> 00:03:12.421
If I was to describe Chris Claremont to anyone, it would be he's horny and he loves time travel.

00:03:12.421 --> 00:03:15.421
And that's X -Men for 40 years.

00:03:15.421 --> 00:03:18.042
I want to see Goblin Queen Dune.

00:03:18.342 --> 00:03:19.322
Yeah.

00:03:20.442 --> 00:03:22.021
I remember.

00:03:22.021 --> 00:03:22.669
So.

00:03:22.669 --> 00:03:27.030
Really quick, my relationship with the X-Men is one of immense fandom.

00:03:27.030 --> 00:03:38.590
I think it's safe to say the X -Men SNES game where you got to play as Cyclops, Wolverine, I think Beast, Psylocke, Gambit, I think I might be missing a character.

00:03:38.590 --> 00:03:41.990
But that is one of my earliest memories.

00:03:41.990 --> 00:03:48.300
And I remember that game, my dad running that game from Blockbuster and it blew my mind and it made me a fan.

00:03:48.300 --> 00:03:51.129
And then there was things like X -Men versus Street Fighter.

00:03:51.129 --> 00:03:52.750
And my dad had...

00:03:52.750 --> 00:03:57.280
He had his comic collection was like 90 % X -Men.

00:03:57.280 --> 00:03:58.830
So he was a huge fan as well.

00:03:58.830 --> 00:04:07.949
And when I started getting into comic books myself, I would read the Marvel essential books, the phone size black and white books.

00:04:07.949 --> 00:04:11.770
And I read like volumes one through, I think like five of X -Men.

00:04:11.770 --> 00:04:17.129
So I like digested a lot of classic Claremont era X -Men and Infernal was one of them.

00:04:17.129 --> 00:04:20.750
And if I'm not mistaken, I think it had its own dedicated essentials.

00:04:20.750 --> 00:04:22.189
And that was an extra.

00:04:22.189 --> 00:04:24.430
Extremely convoluted story.

00:04:24.430 --> 00:04:40.439
So when the show adapted it, I was a little hesitant like you know This is about to be such a clusterfuck and I don't know if I if I can make it but then when they only did one episode I was like, wait a minute like whoa, you convinced 900 pages of a comic book to one episode.

00:04:40.439 --> 00:04:41.839
It was pretty impressive.

00:04:41.839 --> 00:04:46.269
But also like okay Smart call because that would have been maybe lost a lot of people.

00:04:46.269 --> 00:04:58.845
Yeah, we're only getting wave tops here but I think that what they did with a lot of this stuff was really tastefully done as far as like kind of teasing us into, you know, the, the, the, the mat, the matter, the subject matter of it.

00:04:58.845 --> 00:05:04.735
And, and it kind of, this is a really good gateway for them to, you know, what they need to do.

00:05:04.735 --> 00:05:06.815
And in my opinion, this is what they need to do.

00:05:06.815 --> 00:05:12.985
Once everybody's had a chance to release it or to watch it all, they need to go back and they need to do like, do you remember pop -up video?

00:05:12.985 --> 00:05:19.182
So they need to do like a pop -up video version of this season.

00:05:19.182 --> 00:05:25.521
And then obviously when they do the next one and then in every episode, like whatever is a reference, they do like a pop -up like this is a reference in Inferno.

00:05:25.521 --> 00:05:26.721
This is such a great idea.

00:05:26.721 --> 00:05:42.101
I'm surprised that, you know what, Amazon, going on a tangent here, but just to bring it back to that Nicholas Cage, I noticed that that's going to be on Amazon Prime and Amazon Prime has that feature where if you pause it, it'll tell you, Hey, this, here's all the actors in this scene right now.

00:05:42.101 --> 00:05:45.382
And then I think there's sub menus to tell you what else they've been in.

00:05:45.382 --> 00:05:46.382
I wonder if.

00:05:46.382 --> 00:05:53.622
they'll incorporate, that'd be a cool way to incorporate that feature of the Spider-Man noir, because it is like a one -off Spider -Man series, I think you could play around with that.

00:05:53.622 --> 00:06:05.771
But to your point, Aaron, really quick, you hit it on the head where I feel like with a lot of these storylines, and Chris, I know we've still got a lot of storylines to mention, but they did such a good job of just being like, what is the summation of this?

00:06:05.771 --> 00:06:11.437
What is the high level, let's like trim a lot of the fat, because let's be real, this is comic books.

00:06:11.437 --> 00:06:12.937
There is a lot of fat sometimes.

00:06:12.937 --> 00:06:16.458
There is a lot of like tie ins, especially Inferno had so many tie ins.

00:06:16.458 --> 00:06:22.358
It was pretty impressive for them to be like, let's just try to boil it down to its bare minimum.

00:06:22.358 --> 00:06:25.898
Like the important thing is that Madeline Pryor is a clone.

00:06:25.898 --> 00:06:34.858
Sinister has been playing a, you know, been playing a genetic roulette and move on, you know, like this tie that into the larger story, but we don't got to spend a lot of time.

00:06:34.858 --> 00:06:37.677
Yeah, that way they can bring cable in later, essentially.

00:06:37.718 --> 00:06:40.589
That, that was the thing for me that I really appreciated.

00:06:40.589 --> 00:06:50.060
Absolutely about the show though is growing up watching X -Men I always was kind of in it like just this elusive character of mr.

00:06:50.060 --> 00:07:03.759
Sinister He was always very much in the sharp ass teeth Yeah, he was always much in the much in the background of the original X -Men show but never really any kind of Resolution but blife had asked me while we were watching my fiance.

00:07:03.759 --> 00:07:24.194
She was like what is sinister powers and I was a sharp teeth beady eyes creeps Yeah, and that's like that's the thing is like now that I they bring him back and like now that he's still like he is still a very elusive character and you and you they don't really go Yes, he's like stolen genetics and he's kind of like he's kind of like the what is his name?

00:07:24.194 --> 00:07:25.213
It wasn't cipher.

00:07:25.213 --> 00:07:26.853
What was the guy's name?

00:07:26.853 --> 00:07:36.913
Remember heroes the guy that was stealing everybody's powers Well, I would say the greatest comparison is the high evolutionary who they have a relationship in the comics That's the villain from Guardians of the Galaxy volume 3.

00:07:36.913 --> 00:07:37.194
Yes.

00:07:37.194 --> 00:07:43.153
Yeah So they both deal with like genetics and sort of the question, the age old question is just because we can, should we?

00:07:43.153 --> 00:07:45.613
Those guys were like, yeah, we should, you know?

00:07:45.613 --> 00:07:48.374
So Aaron, why don't you talk about the next storyline here?

00:07:48.374 --> 00:07:50.853
It's very Storm Forge.

00:07:50.853 --> 00:07:52.853
Yes, very Storm Forge centric.

00:07:52.853 --> 00:07:55.274
Fourth episode contains too many episodes.

00:07:55.274 --> 00:08:02.593
And this was also the first part of that episode was the Motendo episode as well, which I really liked that one because I'm a game nerd.

00:08:02.593 --> 00:08:05.197
And same thing with you talking about the...

00:08:05.197 --> 00:08:09.218
video game that you played, I had a similar experience with the, it was on a Sega.

00:08:09.218 --> 00:08:10.478
It was like X -Men.

00:08:10.478 --> 00:08:13.437
I don't exactly remember which game it was, but it was X -Men on the Sega Genesis.

00:08:13.437 --> 00:08:16.577
And it's, you actually fought against the Shi 'ar, like all that.

00:08:16.577 --> 00:08:17.288
It was pretty cool.

00:08:17.288 --> 00:08:26.557
The Life Death storyline from Uncanny X-Men number 186 from 1984 by Claremont and Barry Windsor Smith is adapted in the fourth and sixth episode.

00:08:26.557 --> 00:08:28.937
The fourth episode contains too many episodes.

00:08:28.937 --> 00:08:32.812
The first one being Life Death part one, and also Motendo.

00:08:32.812 --> 00:08:36.013
which is an homage to the 1992 X -Men arcade game.

00:08:36.013 --> 00:08:39.972
And you actually see that played in there, all the little effects, and it was really cool.

00:08:39.972 --> 00:08:49.552
I loved that episode, especially with the inclusion of an older, like virtual reality version, almost AI version of Jubilee.

00:08:49.552 --> 00:08:54.332
And I think to put in context for people in the way that sort of, I'll speak kind of selfishly here.

00:08:54.332 --> 00:09:02.309
The way I feel about the series is that the fourth episode might be my least favorite of the series, but - It's still a really enjoyable episode.

00:09:02.309 --> 00:09:03.669
Like you told me that.

00:09:03.669 --> 00:09:03.789
Yeah.

00:09:03.789 --> 00:09:05.769
And it's not, it's not bad by any stretch.

00:09:05.769 --> 00:09:12.899
I'm just, I remember tuning out a couple of times there cause I'm like, okay, I kind of see where this is going, but I will say it's, it's an enjoyable episode.

00:09:12.899 --> 00:09:17.509
I think they were just sort of biting time for that fifth episode, which again smacks you in the face.

00:09:17.509 --> 00:09:17.629
Yeah.

00:09:17.629 --> 00:09:17.970
Yeah.

00:09:17.970 --> 00:09:29.518
I think that what they were trying to do was kind of bring a little bit more relevancy of, you know, sunspot and, and Jubilee kind of being, being kids and kind of.

00:09:29.518 --> 00:09:31.918
I think they did that very intentionally.

00:09:32.278 --> 00:09:38.937
You know, they wanted to ensure that they kind of spotted for everybody the fact that Jubilee was turning 18.

00:09:38.937 --> 00:09:40.097
She's still at, huh?

00:09:40.097 --> 00:09:40.977
I said pun.

00:09:40.977 --> 00:09:42.538
You said spotted, sunspot.

00:09:42.538 --> 00:09:42.957
yeah.

00:09:42.957 --> 00:09:43.327
Yeah.

00:09:43.327 --> 00:09:59.337
But yeah, like they wanted to ensure that going into this very heavy story, like the rest of the storyline for the show with obviously incorporates a lot of other other storylines, but the fact that like they're, they're the X -Men were kids.

00:09:59.501 --> 00:10:05.142
doing very heavy stuff as teenagers, as the original X -Men, and they're still doing that.

00:10:05.142 --> 00:10:13.322
You know, they're still bringing in two young kids, one who's not even fully committed to being an X -Men into what's going on.

00:10:13.322 --> 00:10:15.361
Yeah, and Jubilee never really had a shot to be a kid.

00:10:15.361 --> 00:10:19.902
I think the first episode of the animated series is when she becomes sort of part of the team, right?

00:10:19.902 --> 00:10:21.961
Like, they save her, I think, in that first episode.

00:10:21.961 --> 00:10:27.042
Yeah, she's at a mall hanging out, and a giant, you know, the sentinels show up, and the X -Men save her.

00:10:27.042 --> 00:10:28.461
And from there, her life is, you know...

00:10:28.461 --> 00:10:33.501
She doesn't go back, which I think is a, is an interesting, you know, a setting to kick the show off.

00:10:33.501 --> 00:10:44.740
But yeah, I really want them to do more of a spotlight on her and the struggles that she's going with as she evolves or not evolves, but as she grows into who she will be as an adult.

00:10:44.740 --> 00:10:50.841
And there's a really cool, and we'll talk about the exiles here in a bit with morph, but there's a team of the exiles, a recent run.

00:10:50.841 --> 00:10:54.302
I'm forgetting the writer and artists now, but, Jubilee isn't she's older.

00:10:54.302 --> 00:10:55.822
It's an older Jubilee is on the team.

00:10:55.822 --> 00:10:56.501
which is really cool.

00:10:56.501 --> 00:10:58.392
It's like an older Jubilee, an older Ms.

00:10:58.392 --> 00:11:01.701
Marvel, a Peggy Carter Captain America.

00:11:01.701 --> 00:11:06.981
There's like, there's a couple of different really cool sort of multiverse characters, but Aaron, we have two more here.

00:11:06.981 --> 00:11:10.841
Let's, let's continue on with our, with our, you know, influences.

00:11:10.841 --> 00:11:11.142
All right.

00:11:11.142 --> 00:11:12.081
We'll run through this real quick.

00:11:12.081 --> 00:11:25.389
I'll say some, the next episode is a Magneto rips out the adamantium of Wolverine like any did in 19 eight, 1993s, X -Men number 25 written by Fabian Nichiesa and drawn by Andy Kubert.

00:11:25.389 --> 00:11:30.470
You'll eventually find out that Logan's claws were actually a part of his mutation, not a modification from the weapon X program.

00:11:30.470 --> 00:11:31.730
That's why it gets bone claws.

00:11:31.730 --> 00:11:36.230
Obviously, that lace is skeleton with the enemy in the first place underneath the metal.

00:11:36.230 --> 00:11:43.000
He had a sex tet of jagged bone claws and they're not just like the smooth fucking pieces.

00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:44.590
Like you see the metal.

00:11:44.590 --> 00:11:48.649
Aaron, if you don't mind really quick, but I want you to read this next part because I think you're going to appreciate it.

00:11:48.649 --> 00:11:50.309
And I don't know if you know this, so I'm curious.

00:11:50.309 --> 00:11:50.990
So go ahead.

00:11:50.990 --> 00:12:01.250
No, actually, obviously I'm reading ahead, but I will say X -Men number 25 is one of those comic books that is just burned into my memory.

00:12:01.250 --> 00:12:04.509
I remember plucking it from my dad's collection.

00:12:04.509 --> 00:12:07.789
Obviously there was a holo card on the cover, so I was like, whoa.

00:12:07.789 --> 00:12:13.009
I think I remember ripping the holo card off the cover, and my dad was like, boy, what the fuck are you doing?

00:12:13.009 --> 00:12:15.850
And I think I was banned from his comic collection for a couple months.

00:12:15.850 --> 00:12:19.942
But it was one of those story arcs, right, that like, Made me fall in love with Andy Kubert.

00:12:19.942 --> 00:12:27.121
Like I remember that was my first exposure to him and then obviously the big moment with Magneto ripping out Wolverine's adamanium blew my brain away.

00:12:27.121 --> 00:12:36.042
So, no, I did not know this, but what you're alluding to is a little Easter egg slash tidbit about the, how that, that moment came about.

00:12:36.042 --> 00:12:44.812
And during the 1992 writer ex writers conference for the big X -Men crossover, fatal attractions, Peter David, who is a highly regarded writer.

00:12:44.902 --> 00:12:47.885
he's well known for his Hulk run, but also his, his.

00:12:47.885 --> 00:12:52.485
writing period across Marvel books like X Factor back in the day.

00:12:52.525 --> 00:12:55.566
But he's at this big X writers conference.

00:12:55.566 --> 00:13:02.245
They're trying to plan out the big fatal attractions crossover, which kind of, you know, touched on a bunch of are tied into a lot of X.

00:13:02.245 --> 00:13:05.235
I think it tied into every X title in 92.

00:13:05.235 --> 00:13:06.542
I think it was six titles total.

00:13:06.542 --> 00:13:15.591
Yeah, and every single one of them had a badass holo card that that moderate one point ripped out of his dad's comment Yeah, I collected all six.

00:13:15.591 --> 00:13:22.971
Yeah, look at my cards Collector value gone.

00:13:22.971 --> 00:13:23.282
All right.

00:13:23.282 --> 00:13:40.001
But anyway, so Peter Davis at this conference and he's frustrated over the lack of of actual X Factor characters in X Factor number 85, which I had to look up just to be reminded but X Factor 85 shows a cover of Cable, Bishop, and Wolverine on the cover.

00:13:40.001 --> 00:13:44.951
So none of the X -Factor characters that were prevalent in the book at the time that Peter David is writing.

00:13:44.951 --> 00:13:53.682
So he makes a joke that, well, maybe, and I think it was just a throwaway joke, that maybe Magneto should just pull Wolverine's adamanium skeleton out of his body.

00:13:53.682 --> 00:13:57.001
And he thought it was a joke, but no one laughed.

00:13:57.322 --> 00:14:01.022
And Fabian, I can never say his name right, Neksivia?

00:14:01.022 --> 00:14:01.721
Nek -sivia?

00:14:01.721 --> 00:14:11.395
I apologize, I know I slaughtered that, but Fabian, Here's it and he doesn't laugh and he has a quote that he says is none of us laughed because we thought it was a great idea.

00:14:11.395 --> 00:14:16.375
And obviously that became the iconic X-Men number 25.

00:14:16.375 --> 00:14:17.745
Yeah, insane.

00:14:17.966 --> 00:14:25.166
And a fun fact, since we're on the topic of video games, do you remember how cool it was when you played Marvel versus Capcom 2 for the first time?

00:14:25.166 --> 00:14:29.326
And it was bone claw Wolverine and regular Adam Manium.

00:14:29.405 --> 00:14:29.546
Yeah.

00:14:29.546 --> 00:14:30.105
Yeah.

00:14:30.105 --> 00:14:33.826
What that game did for X -Men, I think, Or what X -Men did for that game?

00:14:33.826 --> 00:14:34.166
I don't know.

00:14:34.166 --> 00:15:02.830
I don't know which one it is But when I think of like 90s video games that one of the first games I think of is Marvel versus Capcom that I still wear the shirt today I still go to arcades and play Marvel versus Capcom to just to rule that machine and play the entire thing through I will never put in more than a dollar and I will hit the scoreboard every time I literally kicked my brother's ass After I left the C2e2 we found a little arcade and they had it and I was like Ellis come on Let's do it one time for our childhood and obviously.

00:15:02.830 --> 00:15:09.159
I used to be the guy that would take my dream cast to school during lunch.

00:15:09.159 --> 00:15:15.080
We had a TV in one of our classrooms and during lunch our teacher would let us hang out in there.

00:15:15.080 --> 00:15:16.940
I would bring my dream cast with Marvel vs.

00:15:16.940 --> 00:15:19.889
Capcom 2 and I would challenge people for money.

00:15:19.889 --> 00:15:23.110
If I was in your school you'd be the coolest kid alive in my eyes.

00:15:23.110 --> 00:15:27.250
Can I also add one more Easter egg episode?

00:15:27.250 --> 00:15:28.494
Was that four?

00:15:28.494 --> 00:15:39.413
No, I'm getting I might be getting too ahead of no I'm not ahead of myself on the topic of that episode which was episode Was that episode 9 that Wolverine gets his?

00:15:39.413 --> 00:15:40.014
Ripped out.

00:15:40.014 --> 00:15:40.153
Yep.

00:15:40.153 --> 00:15:52.874
That is also I think one episode prior episode 7 Where the X -Men suit up and and they're you know, like Wolverine gets into his brown and tan costume Cyclops gets into his I don't know.

00:15:52.874 --> 00:15:54.193
It's swimsuit guy.

00:15:54.193 --> 00:15:55.693
I don't like the weird bald cap thing.

00:15:55.693 --> 00:16:04.666
Yep, but when they get into that costume or that episode, that is also, I believe, a callback not only to the video game, but in a roundabout way.

00:16:04.666 --> 00:16:23.605
That X -Men arcade game, which they reference in the Motendo episode, is also influenced or came from the pilot episode of an abandoned X -Men animated cartoon well before the 90s one that we all know and love called Pride of the X -Men.

00:16:23.605 --> 00:16:26.381
And that was meant to be like a pilot episode.

00:16:26.381 --> 00:16:27.581
The animation was sleek.

00:16:27.581 --> 00:16:31.922
I think it was done by a Japanese animation company, but it just didn't hit the same way.

00:16:31.922 --> 00:16:36.961
And then later it would be revived into the X -Men cartoon that we know and love.

00:16:36.961 --> 00:16:47.322
But I remember playing the hell out of that VHS, because Colossus was in it, Wolverine had Australian accent, and it looked just like the arcade game.

00:16:47.322 --> 00:16:49.721
So I think that's a word that you mention here too.

00:16:49.721 --> 00:16:55.950
I think that's the same episode where Scott puts on the old school...

00:16:55.950 --> 00:17:05.170
Cyclops costume and tosses the suit his old or newer suit to cable and he goes what'd you expect black leather which is a callback.

00:17:05.170 --> 00:17:11.461
Yeah, I want to say the first X -Men movie go outside and these things.

00:17:13.294 --> 00:17:15.173
Yellow spandex.

00:17:15.354 --> 00:17:16.483
Yeah, yeah, that was a cool.

00:17:16.483 --> 00:17:17.423
That's a good one, Aaron.

00:17:17.423 --> 00:17:17.773
Yeah.

00:17:17.773 --> 00:17:27.364
Speaking of Marvel vs Capcom, while we're on the topic really quick, one of my favorite moments of the entire series is when Cyclops uses his hyper move in the last episode against Bassia.

00:17:27.364 --> 00:17:28.173
Optic blast.

00:17:28.173 --> 00:17:29.834
Yeah, optic blast.

00:17:30.034 --> 00:17:31.753
Hit him with that full cannon.

00:17:31.753 --> 00:17:32.773
I would man.

00:17:32.773 --> 00:17:34.733
Chris, I know your pain.

00:17:34.733 --> 00:17:39.150
I finally get it now because I know you've got this beautiful.

00:17:39.150 --> 00:17:55.440
Outline and details and me and Aaron are over here taking like left turns and right turns nearly guys just follow straight ahead Listen, I'm really getting I'm used to I finally get what happens when I am hosting my show and Ed or Cesar are derailing it, but thank you.

00:17:55.440 --> 00:17:58.250
I guess I'm saying thank you for letting me play co -host today.

00:17:58.250 --> 00:18:11.218
Well our last This is what Chris wants me to do willing into his brain right now like magnetic like professor shut up Chris shut, shut your mouth.

00:18:11.218 --> 00:18:12.337
Shut that one up.

00:18:12.337 --> 00:18:12.938
Stupid.

00:18:12.988 --> 00:18:23.938
the existence of the Magneto protocols, which was revealed in the ninth episode, it's first referenced during the aforementioned 1993 fatal attraction, which we've been talking about ad nauseam event storyline.

00:18:23.938 --> 00:18:35.461
These protocols were a series of measures devised by professor X working on in conjunction with the, with shield offering a series of countermeasures to stop Magneto in the event of his going too far.

00:18:36.236 --> 00:18:39.046
Aaron, I'm going to let you keep talking because we have the cast and it's a long one.

00:18:39.046 --> 00:18:39.986
So get ready.

00:18:39.986 --> 00:18:46.395
And, I will say just kind of before we get into it, there's a specific name on here that I know you're going to be excited to hear once you see it.

00:18:46.395 --> 00:18:49.746
Ray Chase is Scott Summers, AKA Cyclops.

00:18:49.746 --> 00:18:51.385
Optic blast.

00:18:52.226 --> 00:18:57.506
Matthew Watterson is Eric Magnus Lencher, Magneto Ross Markand as professor Charles Xavier.

00:18:57.506 --> 00:19:01.105
Jennifer, hey, who's a good friend of the show.

00:19:01.405 --> 00:19:01.786
Yeah.

00:19:01.786 --> 00:19:03.117
As Jean Gray.

00:19:03.117 --> 00:19:07.577
Lenore Zan as Rogue, Allison Sealy Smith as Aurora Monroe.

00:19:07.577 --> 00:19:08.798
That's a lot of ro -ro -ro Monroe.

00:19:08.798 --> 00:19:10.438
I can't feel the breeze.

00:19:12.498 --> 00:19:14.188
Iconic man, classic one.

00:19:14.188 --> 00:19:16.518
I can't feel the breeze.

00:19:16.518 --> 00:19:22.438
Cal Dodd as Logan Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, George Booza as Dr.

00:19:22.438 --> 00:19:29.448
Henry Hank McCoy Beast, AJ Lacascio as Remy Laboe Gambit, Holly Cho as Jubilee.

00:19:29.486 --> 00:19:46.635
Isaac Robinson Smith as Bishop, Adrian Hugh as, or Huff, Huff as Kurt Wagner, Nightcrawler, Guy Agostini as Robert DeCosta, Sunspot, Christopher Britton as Nathaniel Essex, Doctor, excuse me, Doctor Nathaniel Essex, Mr.

00:19:46.635 --> 00:19:54.556
Sinister, Gil Birmingham as Forge, Chris Potter who voiced Gambit in the original series as Nathan Summers Cable.

00:19:54.556 --> 00:19:55.675
I love that Mr.

00:19:55.675 --> 00:19:57.549
Sinister got a downgrade in his title.

00:19:57.549 --> 00:19:58.480
when he became Mr.

00:19:58.480 --> 00:19:58.809
Sinister.

00:19:58.809 --> 00:20:00.410
He was a doctor and then became Mr.

00:20:00.410 --> 00:20:01.420
He's not Dr.

00:20:01.420 --> 00:20:02.130
Sinister anymore.

00:20:02.130 --> 00:20:02.930
No, no, sorry, sorry.

00:20:02.930 --> 00:20:04.829
My father's a doctor, I'm Mr.

00:20:04.950 --> 00:20:05.609
Chris.

00:20:05.609 --> 00:20:07.109
I see you've got a note here.

00:20:07.109 --> 00:20:26.413
And if you don't mind me mentioning this one here, but I was so excited to see Ross Markland, his name on this, because he is a name that, unless you are looking at IMDb's and who voices who in certain cartoons, he's gotten around, not just behind the scenes and for animated shows.

00:20:26.413 --> 00:20:31.933
but also like live action stuff like this one Ross Mark Kwan and hopefully I'm saying that right.

00:20:31.933 --> 00:20:38.314
Has portrayed the red skull in Avengers Infinity War and he voiced Ultron in the what if animated series.

00:20:38.314 --> 00:20:43.334
He's also the voice of immortal and invincible.

00:20:44.054 --> 00:20:48.433
He plays Aaron in the walking dead like my man gets around.

00:20:48.433 --> 00:20:56.269
Yeah, it was cool to see that because I didn't know that you know while watching the series like you're absolutely right like he was a great inclusion here for this.

00:20:56.269 --> 00:21:02.910
And you know, we only get a little bit of professor X there at the tail end, you know, in the last couple episodes, but I'm sure we'll see a lot more of him in season two.

00:21:02.910 --> 00:21:06.740
So, moving on here a little bit, we have, well, so I have fun facts here.

00:21:06.740 --> 00:21:10.450
Is there anything you guys, do you want to go kind of, is there, is there certain episodes?

00:21:10.450 --> 00:21:12.279
How else do you guys want to guide the conversation?

00:21:12.279 --> 00:21:17.950
Cause fun facts is sort of our last bit and that's a long one, but I want to kind of talk a little bit about the series, specific moments.

00:21:17.950 --> 00:21:21.930
We talked about catchphrases and, and sharp lines that people say in the series.

00:21:21.930 --> 00:21:25.198
And I wanted to mention that rogue when she meets up with captain America.

00:21:25.198 --> 00:21:26.738
in that cottage at one point.

00:21:26.738 --> 00:21:30.077
She takes his shield, flings it into the mountains and goes, I guess you don't need that anymore.

00:21:30.077 --> 00:21:33.468
Whenever he's talking about, I need to, if your hands are tied, you can't use this.

00:21:33.468 --> 00:21:34.038
That's right.

00:21:34.038 --> 00:21:34.498
Yeah.

00:21:34.498 --> 00:21:34.698
Yeah.

00:21:34.698 --> 00:21:35.857
That's my favorite one.

00:21:35.857 --> 00:21:38.768
Chris, I think it was such a missed opportunity for me.

00:21:38.768 --> 00:21:42.897
I'm surprised I didn't do any episodes about X -Men 97.

00:21:42.897 --> 00:21:49.597
And maybe that was a saving grace because I just got to enjoy it because there was so many noteworthy quotes in this show.

00:21:49.597 --> 00:21:51.885
Do you know how many times I looked at Blithe throughout the...

00:21:51.885 --> 00:21:56.006
of whatever, this show's been aired for six, seven weeks or whatever.

00:21:56.006 --> 00:21:59.286
You know how many times I looked at her and said, bars, bars.

00:21:59.286 --> 00:22:03.846
You know, like the writing in this show is phenomenal.

00:22:03.986 --> 00:22:09.266
Like this is a show that really respects your intelligence, that understands its audience.

00:22:09.266 --> 00:22:11.715
And I don't doubt that there was kids watching this.

00:22:11.715 --> 00:22:17.556
I can imagine that, you know, hell, a lot of people our age and older are watching this.

00:22:17.556 --> 00:22:19.662
They've got kids, they've got families of their own.

00:22:19.662 --> 00:22:24.162
I'm sure there's people that are like, hey, this is my opportunity to bond with my kid, share something that I got into.

00:22:24.162 --> 00:22:28.442
But I love that they didn't dumb down the dialogue between people.

00:22:28.442 --> 00:22:37.201
Like it wasn't afraid to get emotional and get political and get, you know, deep with things and the writing and the interactions between people.

00:22:37.201 --> 00:22:46.605
Like they're, like I said, I wish I would have wrote down some of the lines and quotes I heard just in this last episode alone between, you know, Magneto and Professor X have so many quotables.

00:22:46.605 --> 00:22:57.185
And obviously you guys are bringing up some of the other ones, but I guess I do want to spotlight how well written the unbelievable these characters are.

00:22:58.105 --> 00:23:00.786
It tells that line of campy and not, right?

00:23:00.786 --> 00:23:10.425
It stays true to the fact that Storm is yelling out her powers as she's doing them, but at the same time, Rogue with her very, very over the top voice and all the things.

00:23:10.425 --> 00:23:15.566
But like you're saying, all of it is so believable and we're so invested as watchers that some of those...

00:23:15.566 --> 00:23:18.465
you know, some of those silly aspects are just part of the fun.

00:23:18.465 --> 00:23:18.786
Yeah.

00:23:18.786 --> 00:23:21.385
I mean, they really lean into like the soap operandist of it.

00:23:21.385 --> 00:23:27.605
I think it executed that so well where it's like, let's, let's have some drama that isn't, you know, involving punching.

00:23:27.605 --> 00:23:33.655
And I think that's where they, you know, they struck such a perfect balance of, of quiet character moments.

00:23:33.655 --> 00:23:36.806
And then the action to me was top notch.

00:23:36.806 --> 00:23:44.109
Sometimes it felt like the anime influence is definitely strong in this, in my opinion, like just from the look and animation.

00:23:44.109 --> 00:23:51.470
but also some of the choreography and act fight scenes, you know, is reminence of fighting games and anime.

00:23:51.470 --> 00:24:00.569
X -Men 97 is, and forgive me if this is kind of like going against what you guys are going to say, but this is something that I really feel is important to state.

00:24:00.890 --> 00:24:14.278
X -Men 97 looks like it is a show that is brought back into reality from the original series in order to kind of bring the older generation, the younger generation together, but it's not.

00:24:14.509 --> 00:24:16.170
And I'm going to say that it's not at all.

00:24:16.170 --> 00:24:16.650
It is.

00:24:16.650 --> 00:24:22.160
This one to me is truly made for the old heads who watched the original X -Men show.

00:24:22.160 --> 00:24:39.170
And I say that because there are so many moments in this show that face some ultra realistic and, and like kind of hard to, to, to like, I don't know, as a kid, you would never be able to understand the, like how, what these things are implying.

00:24:39.170 --> 00:24:52.438
For instance, there's the one episode where Magneto is up, you know, he's, he's, he's, still being trapped by Bastion and that that senator or UN whatever director she like looks at his arm and sees his tattoo from when he was in the Holocaust.

00:24:52.438 --> 00:24:59.998
No kid these days is like no young child who's watching this is really going to understand like the implication of what that tattoo is meaning at that time.

00:24:59.998 --> 00:25:07.978
And it's also just like a purely somber moment of this guy who is just he has nothing left to say to this woman.

00:25:07.978 --> 00:25:12.567
He has nothing left to say to anybody else, but the moment he gets free, he knows exactly what he needs to do.

00:25:12.567 --> 00:25:14.029
He's literally biting his time.

00:25:14.029 --> 00:25:18.390
And that's not a topic that a kid is going to easily understand.

00:25:18.390 --> 00:25:29.990
Same thing with the life death storyline where Aurora is our creature is, is, you know, attacks, forge and is chasing her.

00:25:30.230 --> 00:25:36.130
That creature is purely brought in drawn to both of them through their grief and their pain.

00:25:36.130 --> 00:25:43.597
And kids are going to be like, Ooh, there's a big owl monster, but they're not going to understand the fact that we all have our own demons and our own monsters that are chasing us.

00:25:43.597 --> 00:25:49.178
and we can fight them off as much as we want to, but at some point the bill is due.

00:25:49.577 --> 00:26:10.978
And there's so many amazingly written moments like that, that tie in this feeling of nostalgia from these characters that we love and have adored since we were kids, and these feelings that we have now as an adult and really intertwines them together to create this world that is again, just wave tops of decades of lore.

00:26:10.978 --> 00:26:13.261
And I'm just so impressed by it, but...

00:26:13.261 --> 00:26:16.602
I'm happy that it's not dumbed down for kids.

00:26:16.602 --> 00:26:19.862
We need to re -approach this topic.

00:26:20.122 --> 00:26:21.781
We need to...

00:26:21.781 --> 00:26:31.981
I think it's such a silly thought that when we talk about how we approach children's television or topics, adult themes for kids, kids are smart.

00:26:31.981 --> 00:26:38.481
We need to stop pretending that they don't have all of violence and horror in their pocket right now, because they do.

00:26:38.481 --> 00:26:40.814
So the least we can do is take...

00:26:40.814 --> 00:26:48.733
important topics that they should be learning about in a sort of safe and healthy environment and put it in shit like this.

00:26:48.733 --> 00:26:54.153
Like where else are kids going to learn about relying on other, you know, their family and their friends?

00:26:54.153 --> 00:26:55.114
What makes us different?

00:26:55.114 --> 00:26:57.753
Doesn't necessarily make us adversaries.

00:26:57.913 --> 00:27:09.102
you know, all the important topics that this show sort of highlights might, well, I'll say this and Bob, you kind of talked about a moment ago in terms of what I think is appropriate for kids is that I don't know if there is anything anymore.

00:27:09.102 --> 00:27:18.902
And the fact that they made this for people like us who grew up with X -Men for like the millennial, I guess, millennial and up generation, maybe the older gen Z and up.

00:27:18.902 --> 00:27:20.872
The kids are going to, the kids are going to get along regardless.

00:27:20.872 --> 00:27:22.642
Like they're going to, they're going to see that we're enjoying it.

00:27:22.642 --> 00:27:23.892
They're going to see it in their popular culture.

00:27:23.892 --> 00:27:26.922
They're going to see it online and they're going to be exposed to it in some way.

00:27:26.922 --> 00:27:33.521
But yeah, to pretend that like we need to like kitty this down for some reason, like that's been my, and not to deviate too much.

00:27:33.521 --> 00:27:38.094
We don't have to talk about this very much, but Aaron, that was my main complaint when we talked about Ghostbusters, Frozen Empire.

00:27:38.094 --> 00:27:43.834
Ghostbusters franchise has sort of sort of slowly deviate into all ages, kid friendly bullshit.

00:27:43.834 --> 00:28:02.673
It bothers me because what's great about the Ghostbusters is that it's these, you know, for lumpy sort of just down their luck, no filter New Yorkers out there fighting ghosts, you know, like as I become a naturalized New Yorker, I am appreciating that viewpoint even more.

00:28:02.673 --> 00:28:03.953
I'll tell you, that's the interesting thing.

00:28:03.953 --> 00:28:06.445
And I'll get back to my one of my other points.

00:28:06.445 --> 00:28:19.105
That's the interesting thing about living in New York and the pride that you feel from just being a part of this city There's that scene where where where spider -man's holding the the the basket of people from the bridge That's in the first and like is it the first one?

00:28:19.105 --> 00:28:33.655
Yeah Okay, and like the Green Goblins like trying to like kill him while he's holding these people and the people on the bridge You mess with one of us you mess with all of us, you know, like I almost Teared up the last time I saw that because I'm like fuck.

00:28:33.655 --> 00:28:46.317
Yeah One of the most beautiful things that I think is overlooked in this show is the openness in emotions and how willing everybody is to share how they truly feel with each other.

00:28:46.317 --> 00:28:50.837
And there is this one scene where I think it's an episode nine.

00:28:50.837 --> 00:29:00.508
It's at the end where Morph is sitting next to Logan when he's in bed and he says to him, he's like, she's not here to say it.

00:29:00.508 --> 00:29:01.278
So I will.

00:29:01.278 --> 00:29:05.586
And he turns into Jean Grey and he tells Logan that, They love him.

00:29:05.586 --> 00:29:12.685
And I feel like that was not just Jean Grey or the morph trying to be like helping him and being comforting.

00:29:12.685 --> 00:29:15.806
I feel like that love came from morph.

00:29:15.806 --> 00:29:16.006
yeah.

00:29:16.006 --> 00:29:16.506
100%.

00:29:16.506 --> 00:29:16.895
Yeah.

00:29:16.895 --> 00:29:22.945
That was, that was more of trying to like play to the idea that like he has affection for him.

00:29:22.945 --> 00:29:23.266
You know?

00:29:23.266 --> 00:29:23.846
Exactly.

00:29:23.846 --> 00:29:24.145
Exactly.

00:29:24.145 --> 00:29:31.796
And we already know that because there's that scene where he's like walking into the shower and obviously, you know, I felt like there's like, there is some okayness there, especially from Logan's.

00:29:31.796 --> 00:29:33.518
Logan's old enough to have dipped his.

00:29:33.518 --> 00:29:37.678
You know, his, his, his, there's no way that Logan's not at least by at the very least.

00:29:37.678 --> 00:29:37.897
Yeah.

00:29:37.897 --> 00:29:40.097
I fucking, I, I shipped that right there.

00:29:40.097 --> 00:29:40.397
Okay.

00:29:40.397 --> 00:29:56.738
But what I'm saying is like, that's another level of this show that was very beautifully done, but also very much overlooked with the amount of emotional openness that every character had in this, even Magneto, he, they were so willing to talk about what they truly felt.

00:29:56.738 --> 00:30:03.786
And because they know that like, They're so held back by just being mutants that they can't even hide their emotions.

00:30:03.786 --> 00:30:03.976
Yeah.

00:30:03.976 --> 00:30:04.246
Damn.

00:30:04.246 --> 00:30:21.086
I'm trying my best to find the screen grab I got of, cause Aaron, what you said about them being very open, the characters being very open about how they feel, their emotions and, you know, not being afraid to like, you know, get a little in there and, you know, a little feely about stuff.

00:30:21.226 --> 00:30:29.220
The sisterhood between Jean Grey and Storm, you know, and this is coming, you know, from a hetero, you know, a hetero male perspective.

00:30:29.294 --> 00:30:36.013
Even I really enjoyed seeing that bond between two strong women and that sisterhood.

00:30:36.013 --> 00:30:39.374
Obviously the obvious differences between them.

00:30:39.374 --> 00:30:45.094
I know, and I'm not trying to speak on her behalf, but I know for Blythe, that was really believable.

00:30:45.094 --> 00:30:53.163
That was something that she really liked seeing was like, wow, these two strong female characters having that sisterhood and sharing those emotions.

00:30:53.163 --> 00:30:59.890
There was a killer quote between the two of them that I cannot - recall off top of my head, but it was like a good wordplay.

00:30:59.890 --> 00:31:03.930
And it was like, I'll be the wind, I'll be the wind of your thought.

00:31:03.930 --> 00:31:07.029
I don't want to even try to - I know exactly what you're talking about.

00:31:07.029 --> 00:31:10.299
Unless we know it, I don't even want to say it because it was that good.

00:31:10.299 --> 00:31:20.210
But if, to quickly go back to, there's no way I could have brought up quotables in this show and not mention one of the best quotables in this entire fucking show.

00:31:20.210 --> 00:31:21.579
The name's Gambit.

00:31:21.579 --> 00:31:23.109
Remember it, you know?

00:31:23.109 --> 00:31:23.130
-huh.

00:31:23.130 --> 00:31:23.660
That's right.

00:31:23.660 --> 00:31:23.940
Yeah.

00:31:23.940 --> 00:31:24.190
Yeah.

00:31:24.190 --> 00:31:25.210
That's a good one as well.

00:31:25.210 --> 00:31:25.614
Man.

00:31:25.614 --> 00:31:29.493
I have one final question for us before we head into fun facts and we kind of round out this review.

00:31:29.493 --> 00:31:33.473
I want to ask each of you and I'll start us off here just to kind of get the conversation going.

00:31:33.473 --> 00:31:36.894
What was your favorite episode of the series and then who was your favorite character as well?

00:31:36.894 --> 00:31:40.094
So for me, the characters are all great across the board.

00:31:40.094 --> 00:31:44.023
I think there should be a big argument for Rogue in this series.

00:31:44.023 --> 00:31:46.324
Magneto had a lot of play as well.

00:31:46.324 --> 00:31:53.273
I think that Gambit obviously has his moment in episode five that, you know, that Genosha moment was insane.

00:31:53.273 --> 00:31:59.281
But for me, I think this show, really put a lot of slim doubters to sleep.

00:31:59.281 --> 00:32:01.981
Cyclops is a fucking badass in this series.

00:32:01.981 --> 00:32:02.662
I love it.

00:32:02.662 --> 00:32:03.281
I've always...

00:32:03.281 --> 00:32:05.781
Slim doubters is a great name for Cyclops haters.

00:32:05.781 --> 00:32:06.672
Aaron, you got it?

00:32:06.672 --> 00:32:07.321
Okay, you got it.

00:32:07.321 --> 00:32:07.961
Yeah.

00:32:07.961 --> 00:32:14.142
So have them mind your weather and they'll have to weather your mind.

00:32:14.342 --> 00:32:15.122
Bars.

00:32:15.221 --> 00:32:16.362
Yeah, bars.

00:32:16.902 --> 00:32:20.701
So yeah, so Cyclops is by far my favorite character in the series.

00:32:20.701 --> 00:32:22.622
He's obviously the clear leader.

00:32:22.622 --> 00:32:25.349
Cyclops has been my favorite X -Men for...

00:32:26.894 --> 00:32:28.763
I don't know where it really started.

00:32:28.763 --> 00:32:33.874
It could have been honestly Marvel versus Capcom back in the day, but I just remember always being really behind him.

00:32:33.874 --> 00:32:38.513
Like he's like, in my opinion, in the Marvel universe, one of the true leaders.

00:32:38.513 --> 00:32:43.834
And he's kind of considered a little bit of a boy scout and sort of a mouthpiece for, you know, Professor Xavier in certain aspects.

00:32:43.834 --> 00:32:46.433
But I think he truly cares about the team.

00:32:46.433 --> 00:32:58.642
And while he can be kind of a dummy in some of the Claremont stuff every once in a while, like most of these characters are, what this show does and how they kind of frame Scott is perfect for what the show is trying to do.

00:32:58.642 --> 00:33:01.682
Favorite episode was episode number five, Genosha.

00:33:01.682 --> 00:33:03.662
Incredible, just really good.

00:33:03.662 --> 00:33:09.541
I will say my favorite fight though is between the Sentinel Prime people and the X -Men.

00:33:09.541 --> 00:33:20.201
At one point, talking about anime and Spire, they get together and there's this close -up of, I think someone is throwing a punch and it looks like right out of a manga.

00:33:20.201 --> 00:33:22.261
It looked like a Dragon Ball panel.

00:33:22.261 --> 00:33:24.461
The fist is large.

00:33:24.461 --> 00:33:26.122
And you see like the lines behind it.

00:33:26.122 --> 00:33:29.382
I think Rogue has a similar kick later on in the series.

00:33:29.382 --> 00:33:33.182
Cable has one in the last episode where he like punches the thing.

00:33:33.182 --> 00:33:35.102
It's all very cool.

00:33:35.102 --> 00:33:39.102
So yeah, but episode five, which I think for a lot of people is the best episode.

00:33:39.102 --> 00:33:40.501
Remember his name of the episode.

00:33:40.501 --> 00:33:44.582
Yeah, episode five stands out because I think for me that was the turning point.

00:33:44.582 --> 00:33:52.877
A close second, I think, would be episode nine, Tolerance is Extinction, part two, which I believe is the episode where they all get suited up in...

00:33:52.877 --> 00:34:11.097
You know, storms in a classic 70s suit and so cyclops, but, I think for me it's a, it's a personal, I guess all of this is personal, but them, margin, you know, the rent making me reminisce about the arcade game, and the, the pride of the X -Men pilot, just such like, you know, it, it touched me.

00:34:11.097 --> 00:34:12.538
It resonated with me in a different way.

00:34:12.538 --> 00:34:14.777
So that was probably my second favorite.

00:34:15.197 --> 00:34:22.286
Chris, when that episode where they all turn, when we first see the Sentinel prime people, I think one of the most.

00:34:22.286 --> 00:34:28.226
badass scenes is Wolverine falling through the sky and you know, like fighting his way, you know what I'm saying?

00:34:28.226 --> 00:34:30.735
Like slashing his way through all these prime sense.

00:34:30.735 --> 00:34:33.076
As he's falling, I thought it was something epic.

00:34:33.076 --> 00:34:36.326
And obviously Nightcrawler, you know, picking up the three swords.

00:34:36.326 --> 00:34:39.706
You know, it's like, whoa, they added a third one.

00:34:39.706 --> 00:34:41.326
Of course his tail.

00:34:41.585 --> 00:34:49.742
Yeah, there's a lot of great, I think overall the action in this was such a nice.

00:34:49.742 --> 00:35:00.822
touch because it, you know, they could have easily leaned one way into where it's very soap opera and you know, we are getting a lot of dialogue and emotions, but I love that they went no stops of the action.

00:35:00.822 --> 00:35:02.282
It felt like a big moment.

00:35:02.282 --> 00:35:04.342
So those would be my two favorite episodes.

00:35:04.342 --> 00:35:06.362
I think favorite characters that come to mind.

00:35:06.362 --> 00:35:08.222
I've always been a Cyclops fan.

00:35:08.222 --> 00:35:12.672
I think it, I think all big brothers kind of automatically gravitate towards the leaders.

00:35:12.672 --> 00:35:14.851
And sometimes those leaders can be a little boy scouted.

00:35:14.851 --> 00:35:16.262
They can, you know, you know what I'm saying?

00:35:16.262 --> 00:35:17.402
They could be a little corny.

00:35:17.402 --> 00:35:19.757
I think, you know, I get the same.

00:35:19.757 --> 00:35:22.018
look of like, you know, Cyclops is your favorite.

00:35:22.018 --> 00:35:24.768
When I tell people Leo is my favorite turtle, right?

00:35:24.768 --> 00:35:29.858
There's something about being a leader that, you know, there is a burden that comes with that, right?

00:35:29.858 --> 00:35:32.297
Like you've got to be the example, the role model.

00:35:32.297 --> 00:35:35.657
We can't all be Wolverine, you know, there's, there's bigger things at play.

00:35:35.657 --> 00:35:42.958
And I thought they did a great job of, of showing the weight that is on Cyclops's shoulders this episode.

00:35:42.958 --> 00:35:43.181
And.

00:35:43.181 --> 00:35:52.222
the difficulty that comes of being a leader and being the prodigal son of Professor X.

00:35:52.461 --> 00:35:57.402
And not only that, but Cyclops had a lot of badass moments, like the giant optic blast.

00:35:57.402 --> 00:36:03.052
That speech he has with Cable at the end was extremely emotional and heart touching.

00:36:03.052 --> 00:36:10.670
The fact that they slowed things down and he was having a conversation with them at whatever, it looked like a restaurant, a diner or something.

00:36:10.670 --> 00:36:17.090
So I'd say Cyclops and - Well, also really quick, when he jumped out of the plane in the first episode and he uses his blast to land.

00:36:17.550 --> 00:36:20.070
And the way he's scooting around the warehouse.

00:36:20.070 --> 00:36:21.469
Off the rip.

00:36:21.469 --> 00:36:30.769
And I would probably say for a very close second, this show made me appreciate Storm in a whole different way.

00:36:30.829 --> 00:36:42.840
I feel like Storm is one of those characters that has such a loud fan base and she's got such a very dedicated and loving - fan base, like people who love Storm don't just mildly like her.

00:36:42.840 --> 00:36:44.730
Like they really, really like her.

00:36:44.730 --> 00:36:53.730
And I think I, after this show, I think I'm kind of in that fan base where not only is she, you know, does her costumes look cool.

00:36:53.730 --> 00:36:56.949
I'm a big fan of like the, the, the retro seventies costume.

00:36:56.949 --> 00:37:03.333
Not only is her powers awesome, but w you know, I guess one critique I had.

00:37:03.438 --> 00:37:16.018
was like, man, Storm didn't have these big moments and these bad -ass, when she got her powers back, I felt like she didn't really display the God level that she's at, but that's not really Storm, right?

00:37:16.018 --> 00:37:18.777
She's kind of like the empathetic, the mother role.

00:37:18.777 --> 00:37:19.878
She's wise, right?

00:37:19.878 --> 00:37:22.637
She's revered as a God in her home country.

00:37:22.637 --> 00:37:26.898
There's a certain responsibility and way that she carries herself.

00:37:26.898 --> 00:37:30.253
And no, I don't think that she needed to be.

00:37:30.253 --> 00:37:33.713
you know, the Wolverine or, you know, have these giant moments.

00:37:33.713 --> 00:37:36.134
I think she, her role in this was excellent.

00:37:36.134 --> 00:37:41.474
Like, you know, her moments with Jean Grey, even though they weren't a bunch of action, like were, were really sentimental.

00:37:41.474 --> 00:37:44.983
And I think the actress absolutely like brought her A game.

00:37:44.983 --> 00:37:47.414
If anything, I think she might've been the best.

00:37:47.414 --> 00:37:58.384
I mean, everyone brought an incredible performance, but there's something of Storm that every time she spoke, you really felt like she was, she was really putting her heart and soul into this.

00:37:58.384 --> 00:37:58.793
Okay.

00:37:58.793 --> 00:37:59.342
She got.

00:37:59.342 --> 00:38:01.681
fucked in X -Men Age of Apocalypse.

00:38:01.862 --> 00:38:03.722
She got fucked.

00:38:03.722 --> 00:38:04.041
I'm just saying.

00:38:04.041 --> 00:38:05.081
Very true.

00:38:05.081 --> 00:38:06.981
Halle Berry should have never touched the character.

00:38:06.981 --> 00:38:07.541
That's right.

00:38:07.541 --> 00:38:08.012
No, no, no.

00:38:08.012 --> 00:38:10.552
Age of Apocalypse was when she was the kid, man.

00:38:10.552 --> 00:38:11.981
And she wasn't even like a god.

00:38:11.981 --> 00:38:13.121
Like she was just like this.

00:38:13.121 --> 00:38:14.782
No, I know what you're saying.

00:38:14.782 --> 00:38:16.461
My point still stands.

00:38:17.262 --> 00:38:18.822
Halle Berry should have never touched the character.

00:38:18.822 --> 00:38:19.782
Same with Catwoman.

00:38:19.782 --> 00:38:20.762
Moving on.

00:38:20.762 --> 00:38:26.925
My favorite character was absolutely and will always like revolving was Cable, man.

00:38:26.925 --> 00:38:30.146
Like, Cable for me, I'm a huge Cable fan.

00:38:30.146 --> 00:38:34.346
I remember when I was a kid, after watching, like, I was a huge reader when I was a kid.

00:38:34.346 --> 00:38:41.016
I got this novel and it was all about Cable and like this, you know, him being in the future.

00:38:41.016 --> 00:38:46.226
And then at one point, you know, Jean Grey and Cyclops are actually, you know, we see them transported.

00:38:46.226 --> 00:38:51.505
And this is probably where that book kind of is going to touch into, where they're transported into the future with a young Cable.

00:38:51.505 --> 00:38:54.215
The adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, yeah.

00:38:54.215 --> 00:38:54.686
Yeah.

00:38:54.686 --> 00:38:54.905
Yeah.

00:38:54.905 --> 00:39:11.557
So I was like, I've always, since then, I've been a fan of Cable and the lore and like how, and I wish they would have talked about it a little bit more in the show about how he actually has to use his psychic, like he is such a strong telepath that he - To hold back the TK or the techno.

00:39:11.557 --> 00:39:12.887
Yeah, the techno virus.

00:39:12.887 --> 00:39:13.188
Yeah.

00:39:13.188 --> 00:39:17.128
So he's like, he keeps it in arm form and on that part of his body.

00:39:17.128 --> 00:39:18.927
Cause if he doesn't, it'll overtake him.

00:39:18.927 --> 00:39:21.927
And I'm like, man, I wish they would have talked about that so much more.

00:39:21.927 --> 00:39:40.369
I don't know much about X -Men, but I - Fucking know that and I wish that was a part of it But if cable had a hell of a hell of a moment when he's fighting gene gray and he what he said He's like my mother is one of the most powerful telepaths in the world things like that don't tend to skip a generation Yeah, you like Kami Kami, huh?

00:39:40.369 --> 00:39:45.920
You know, well, it's making of people who get their arm ripped off and beaten with it Yeah, cable in this series.

00:39:45.920 --> 00:39:47.389
Can I finish?

00:39:47.389 --> 00:39:48.389
Can I finish?

00:39:48.389 --> 00:39:49.210
Can I finish?

00:39:49.210 --> 00:39:52.538
Listen, I'm gonna let you finish but Beyonce had the best album of the year.

00:39:52.538 --> 00:39:58.847
I gotta say, like, I just like you guys, well actually as episode 10, I think episode 10 was my absolute favorite.

00:39:58.847 --> 00:39:59.557
The last one.

00:39:59.557 --> 00:39:59.918
Yeah.

00:39:59.918 --> 00:40:00.958
Yeah.

00:40:01.117 --> 00:40:05.577
and that mostly is because we see a lot of these characters in that last fight with Bastion.

00:40:05.577 --> 00:40:07.918
We see a lot of these characters just going off, man.

00:40:07.918 --> 00:40:15.342
Like they go off on these motherfuckers and like even Jubilee, like Jubilee, like she gets that moment where we finally.

00:40:15.342 --> 00:40:19.652
That's the one thing that we did not get enough of in this series.

00:40:19.652 --> 00:40:21.021
And I hope we get more of it later on.

00:40:21.021 --> 00:40:24.681
Like I said, I want to see the growth of her into her powers, into her character.

00:40:24.681 --> 00:40:27.702
I want to see her start doing some heavy fucking damage.

00:40:27.702 --> 00:40:34.021
Like she fucked up Bastion quite a bit during that fight, but she did not tap into her powers nearly enough.

00:40:34.021 --> 00:40:43.150
And that scene with that final fight when they're just beating his ass and you could tell like he's just kind of like, he's kind of like taking it.

00:40:43.150 --> 00:40:45.769
But they even go back to Genosha.

00:40:45.769 --> 00:40:49.349
And I thought that that was a great touch, like take it back to where he really started messing with them.

00:40:49.349 --> 00:41:01.030
That kind of wrapped up like the episode with me was with the, you know, with the mid -credits scene as well, which I thought was amazing, as well as the, you know, right before, you know, when we kind of get the cliffhanger for the next season.

00:41:01.030 --> 00:41:09.090
I'm so excited because I've always loved, and I'll say, spoiler alert, I've always loved the cartoon version of Apocalypse.

00:41:09.090 --> 00:41:09.806
Yeah.

00:41:09.806 --> 00:41:17.786
And so I'm excited to see them do him like some justice versus age of apocalypse X-Men bullshit.

00:41:17.786 --> 00:41:39.661
If I may really quick, because I feel like I would be doing a disservice to myself if I didn't also mention to round out my top characters, I think I have to say Magneto because Magneto also was on that same caliber of Storm where every single scene he was in, he kind of stole the show, whether it be something he said, you know, the emotion.

00:41:39.661 --> 00:41:43.922
I think the voice actor played every scene really well.

00:41:43.922 --> 00:41:50.001
It felt like depending on what was going on, that was the way he emoted and the things he would recall.

00:41:50.001 --> 00:41:56.521
But also just overall, seeing Magneto also be a force of nature, quite literally.

00:41:56.521 --> 00:42:06.981
He stops the whole world of that wave and getting an idea of, wow, this is a guy that is practicing restraint and he don't got a lot of it.

00:42:06.981 --> 00:42:08.846
He don't got a lot of patience for it.

00:42:08.846 --> 00:42:13.186
And I think just seeing Magneto kind of show how OP he is.

00:42:13.186 --> 00:42:27.326
And I'm hoping Storm maybe gets that opportunity, but I think I enjoy the differences where it is Magneto is, you know, he's got a reason to be filled with rage and Storm like, you know, is kind of like that balance, but Magneto also.

00:42:27.365 --> 00:42:34.365
That scene where Professor Xavier mind blasts Magneto was insane.

00:42:34.365 --> 00:42:35.054
Yeah.

00:42:35.054 --> 00:42:38.804
Like he's just like he came a may of him like his fucking brain.

00:42:38.804 --> 00:42:45.114
And I'm just like, also shout out to shout out to old Magnus getting it with rogue old man still got game.

00:42:45.114 --> 00:42:46.474
Come on, man.

00:42:46.474 --> 00:42:50.833
Magneto came in, stole the school from Cyclops.

00:42:50.833 --> 00:42:51.554
Yeah.

00:42:51.554 --> 00:42:55.143
So again, it's a menace, man.

00:42:55.143 --> 00:42:58.974
He was a smooth talking silver haired silver fox.

00:42:58.974 --> 00:43:00.750
Yeah, for sure.

00:43:00.750 --> 00:43:02.110
All right, let's get into our fun fact.

00:43:02.110 --> 00:43:03.389
Let's round up this conversation, Aaron.

00:43:03.389 --> 00:43:04.530
Let's speed through these.

00:43:04.530 --> 00:43:05.829
I'll take three.

00:43:05.829 --> 00:43:07.670
Aaron, you take three and then bother if you want to take three.

00:43:07.670 --> 00:43:08.150
We'll do that.

00:43:08.150 --> 00:43:09.119
We'll just kind of go down the line.

00:43:09.119 --> 00:43:25.170
So when Cyclops feels lost and he tries to figure out how to lead the X -Men after the passing professor Xavier, he finds a photo of the original X -Men team in their original comic book uniforms that includes Scott, Jean Grey's Marvel Girl, Hank McCoy's Beast, Bobby Drake's Iceman, who we don't see in the series at all.

00:43:25.170 --> 00:43:25.806
I don't think.

00:43:25.806 --> 00:43:30.396
And also we don't see, I don't know if we see Warren Warrington's angel at any point during the season either.

00:43:30.396 --> 00:43:38.856
I think we maybe see Archangel at an episode five during the Genosa episode, but I don't remember seeing Warren at all.

00:43:38.856 --> 00:43:40.976
Yo, fuck Professor Xavier by the way.

00:43:40.976 --> 00:43:42.246
That dude's a total bitch.

00:43:42.246 --> 00:43:42.985
Why?

00:43:42.985 --> 00:43:45.126
Why don't you like Professor X?

00:43:45.126 --> 00:43:47.545
Fucking went off world just to get some pussy.

00:43:47.545 --> 00:43:49.206
Some bird pussy.

00:43:49.525 --> 00:43:50.865
Some pussy.

00:43:51.054 --> 00:44:00.773
Morph's costume was adapted from his second look in the 2001 Exile series, minus the cape he wears in the comics, by writer Judd Winnick and artist Mike McCone.

00:44:00.773 --> 00:44:05.934
The Exiles are a band of alt -reality versions of X -Men characters who band together for a multiverse -spanning adventure.

00:44:05.934 --> 00:44:16.213
Genean Scott's wedding portrait is a recreation of 1994's X -Men 30 from writer Fabian Nikiza, excuse me, and artist Andy Kubert, the issue in which they get married in the comics.

00:44:16.213 --> 00:44:19.014
One of the few X -Men comics I actually own.

00:44:19.213 --> 00:44:21.853
In the eighth episode, it's a pretty cover.

00:44:21.853 --> 00:44:22.333
It is.

00:44:22.333 --> 00:44:22.494
Yeah.

00:44:22.494 --> 00:44:22.974
Beautiful.

00:44:22.974 --> 00:44:28.224
So in the eighth episode, General William Stryker shows up on the TV.

00:44:28.224 --> 00:44:30.454
He is a classic X -Men villain from the story.

00:44:30.454 --> 00:44:35.443
God loves man kills by writer Chris Claremont and artist Brent Eric Anderson.

00:44:35.443 --> 00:44:38.373
I feel like you just don't even need to say Chris Claremont anymore.

00:44:38.373 --> 00:44:45.034
You just fucking know that it's like, you know, I just want to say I heard a really funny story.

00:44:45.034 --> 00:44:46.797
Just quick sidebar.

00:44:46.797 --> 00:44:57.978
Chris Claremont told this story at one of his many con visits where he talked about how in the original pitch for God Love Man Kills the original artist was not supposed to be Eric Anderson.

00:44:57.978 --> 00:44:59.838
It was actually supposed to be Neil Adams.

00:44:59.838 --> 00:45:01.697
So and Neil Adams dropped out last minute.

00:45:01.697 --> 00:45:05.208
So it was Eric Anderson, or excuse me, Eric Anderson who had to fill in for him.

00:45:05.208 --> 00:45:10.518
So imagine, I mean, God Love Man Kills is my favorite X -Men, you know, story of all time.

00:45:10.518 --> 00:45:12.557
Imagine Neil Adams on that book as well.

00:45:12.557 --> 00:45:14.574
Now to put it in a whole different.

00:45:14.574 --> 00:45:17.074
I mean, I mean, it's already like a top tier book.

00:45:17.074 --> 00:45:19.773
Well, if Neil Adams at his prime, crazy.

00:45:19.773 --> 00:45:20.054
Yep.

00:45:20.054 --> 00:45:25.204
In the first episode, a Daily Bugle paper can be seen with the headline at the top that reads Hellfire Gala.

00:45:25.204 --> 00:45:31.103
The Hellfire Gala is a yearly event where mutants come together and celebrate mutant kind with dressing up and a fancy dinner.

00:45:31.103 --> 00:45:37.646
The story is also written by Eddie Brock, aka Venom, with photos by Peter Parker, which actually we see at one point we see a cameo of.

00:45:37.646 --> 00:45:40.695
Peter Parker and Mary Jane just watching the TV.

00:45:40.695 --> 00:45:41.606
And Flash.

00:45:41.606 --> 00:45:43.985
Yeah, and then it was when Genosha happened.

00:45:43.985 --> 00:45:47.896
And then recognizable mutants in Genosha include Wizkid, Leech.

00:45:47.896 --> 00:45:49.666
Leech scared.

00:45:49.746 --> 00:45:51.525
Blod Herman.

00:45:52.226 --> 00:45:53.085
Pixie.

00:45:53.085 --> 00:45:54.106
Good, Aaron.

00:45:54.106 --> 00:45:54.726
Thank you.

00:45:54.726 --> 00:45:58.425
The fallen and out reality version of Warren Worthy in the third.

00:45:58.565 --> 00:46:05.106
Nature Girl, Gentle, Multiple Man, Exodus, Dazzler, Boom Boom, Archangel, Squid Boy, Mero, and many more.

00:46:05.106 --> 00:46:06.985
So two Warringtons there.

00:46:07.021 --> 00:46:11.422
The big fucking dude with the mohawk, he's lifting like, who is that?

00:46:11.422 --> 00:46:16.101
I don't know, but I know he's one of the Exile, or no, he's one of the, fuck.

00:46:16.101 --> 00:46:16.692
X Factor?

00:46:16.692 --> 00:46:17.782
Are you talking about Strong Guy?

00:46:17.782 --> 00:46:19.422
It might be Strong Guy, that's what it is.

00:46:19.422 --> 00:46:23.342
That's one of the characters I recognized, but I didn't know his name.

00:46:23.501 --> 00:46:26.802
But, Leech never be afraid again.

00:46:27.141 --> 00:46:31.882
For my tidbits in Easter Eggs, starting with episode four.

00:46:31.882 --> 00:46:36.590
Forge is working in his basement when a photo can be seen of him and the X Factor team.

00:46:36.590 --> 00:46:42.130
Which includes Quicksilver, Havoc, Polaris, Multiple Man, Strong Guy, and Wolfsbane.

00:46:42.130 --> 00:46:43.960
We mentioned Peter David early on.

00:46:43.960 --> 00:46:54.280
Peter David being one of the writers for X Factor and really being responsible for fleshing out the team and all of these characters I just named were in his X Factor or in his X Factor book.

00:46:54.280 --> 00:47:00.909
So I highly recommend if you never read that series, it was like a different take on, you know, the X -Men kind of canon.

00:47:00.909 --> 00:47:03.469
These, you know, X Factor was working with the government.

00:47:03.469 --> 00:47:05.710
So there's that aspect going for it.

00:47:05.710 --> 00:47:06.889
All right, moving on.

00:47:06.889 --> 00:47:09.940
Sunspot's address is 1 Claremont Avenue.

00:47:09.940 --> 00:47:24.730
It's obviously a reference to Sunspot's co-creator, Chris Claremont, but also the name that gets brought up anytime anyone talks about X -Men comics because he wrote so many X -Men comics starting from 1975 all the way well into 1991.

00:47:24.730 --> 00:47:30.429
And honestly, even into the 2000s, he started getting back into writing X -Men.

00:47:30.429 --> 00:47:37.610
And last but not least, Rogue and Nightcrawler refer to themselves as siblings, which is a reference to Mystique.

00:47:37.610 --> 00:47:46.070
In the comic books, Mystique is the biological mother of not only Nightcrawler, but also adopted Rogue when she was young, making them step siblings.

00:47:46.070 --> 00:47:46.309
Yeah.

00:47:46.309 --> 00:47:59.199
So maybe, I don't know if people know this or not, but Mystique and Destiny, I think Destiny is the biological mother of Nightcrawler and Mystique is technically the biological father of Nightcrawler because of her powers.

00:47:59.199 --> 00:48:01.326
I thought Asriel was the biological father.

00:48:01.326 --> 00:48:04.905
There's a lineage there, but I think it's changed.

00:48:04.905 --> 00:48:05.505
It's changed.

00:48:05.505 --> 00:48:08.045
Again, timey wimey X -Men stuff, I think.

00:48:08.045 --> 00:48:08.936
But let's see here.

00:48:08.936 --> 00:48:15.885
In the eighth episode, Cable, Cyclops and Gene travel together to a location with the lead on Bastion, which turns out to be his childhood home.

00:48:15.885 --> 00:48:21.126
Boxes of memories fill the place, including a poster for the Stark Expo, which is pretty cool.

00:48:21.126 --> 00:48:27.065
The Marvel Universe cameos in the finale include Silver Samurai, Iron Man in his suit that he wore in the original animated series.

00:48:27.065 --> 00:48:28.416
Captain America shows up again.

00:48:28.416 --> 00:48:29.262
Daredevil.

00:48:29.262 --> 00:48:33.141
Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Cloak and Dagger, who are also mutants as well.

00:48:33.141 --> 00:48:40.621
The Winter Guard, which is Valentine, I'm gonna say this name incorrectly, Valentine, Shatalova, Crimson Dynamo, Omega Red, and Darkstar.

00:48:40.621 --> 00:48:45.722
And we also see Alpha Flight, which is Norstar, Aurora, and Puck, and with Frenzy and Psylocke.

00:48:45.722 --> 00:48:47.722
So that was pretty cool to see all them together.

00:48:47.722 --> 00:48:49.342
Why is Psylocke hanging out with Alpha Flight?

00:48:49.342 --> 00:48:52.702
I don't know, but that's still a cool little reference.

00:48:52.702 --> 00:48:55.742
And it makes it feel this universe bigger.

00:48:55.742 --> 00:48:57.838
I think I've read something where the...

00:48:57.838 --> 00:49:25.097
Producer I think producer, you know director producer Larry Houston was his name But I guess like he had recommended they do that and at first they were kind of timid but you know, they decided, you know, let's just put it in that last episode and Obviously, that's something everyone has been talking about right is all the cameos and you know whatnot And I think it does a great job of making this universe feel bigger, you know, obviously it's like it's you know, it's X -Men It's in it's in the Marvel Universe.

00:49:25.097 --> 00:49:26.557
It wouldn't be right.

00:49:26.557 --> 00:49:34.465
I if you didn't play on the Marvel Universe's natural lore, which is, or foundation, which is that this is all connected.

00:49:34.465 --> 00:49:41.045
But something about seeing Daredevil, I don't know, for me, I was like, yeah, like, well, you know what I'm saying?

00:49:41.045 --> 00:49:43.896
It's like Daredevil being a badass and he looks good.

00:49:43.896 --> 00:49:50.885
Obviously he made a couple of appearances in the Spider -Man animated show, but I just got a soft spot for seeing Daredevil show up in an X -Men cartoon.

00:49:50.885 --> 00:49:51.806
Yeah.

00:49:51.806 --> 00:49:55.630
When Bashing arrives on Asteroid Rogue relocates the fight to the moon.

00:49:55.630 --> 00:50:03.250
While not identified by name, the ruins they crash into mark as a blue area of the moon beyond containing the Citadel of Watu, the Watcher.

00:50:03.250 --> 00:50:05.369
This is also where the X -Men fought the Dark Phoenix.

00:50:05.369 --> 00:50:06.710
So that's pretty cool.

00:50:06.710 --> 00:50:11.190
With most of the X -Men presumed dead, Forge takes it upon himself to start assembling a new team.

00:50:11.190 --> 00:50:16.340
Six months after E -Day, he's assembled a list of mutants that are likely recruits.

00:50:16.340 --> 00:50:23.630
The poster Forge makes resembles the famous cover of Uncanny X -Men number 141, which started the Days of Future Past storyline.

00:50:23.630 --> 00:50:31.349
The poster lists Archangel as Presumed Dead and Cable, Jubilee, and Sunspot as AWOL, or Away Without Leave in case you don't know that acronym.

00:50:31.829 --> 00:50:37.920
It notes that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are off -world and Shadowcat, AKA KittyPride, is alive but missing.

00:50:37.920 --> 00:50:44.170
This leaves the only potential recruits as Colossus, Magic, Dust, Iceman, Havoc, Exodus, and Emma Frost.

00:50:44.170 --> 00:51:06.291
While Xavier and Magneto are trapped in a collective mindscape together, there are many references to Onslaught, the unholy combination of both Professor Xavier and Magneto's Consciousness I have such a soft spot for onslaught as convoluted and Pure 90s gimmicky power that yeah that that that was That is like a character.

00:51:06.291 --> 00:51:15.362
I grew up with you know it was one of those books I pulled from my dad's you know collection and was like yeah This is like the coolest you know I'm saying it's it reeks of just coolness.

00:51:15.362 --> 00:51:19.097
You know the design the concept, he was also the last boss in Marvel vs.

00:51:19.097 --> 00:51:20.557
Capcom 1.

00:51:20.717 --> 00:51:21.518
It's just the 90s.

00:51:21.518 --> 00:51:29.077
Yeah, so I won't lie, I did get a little nerd boner as they're alluding to onslaught throughout this entire season.

00:51:29.077 --> 00:51:38.938
From Professor X mind wiping Magneto to Magneto having amnesia and him being inside of his mind, it's all accumulating to onslaught.

00:51:38.938 --> 00:51:42.418
And I think that's what I'm really excited about is all the potential.

00:51:42.418 --> 00:51:45.934
Because we got to see them do these cool remixes.

00:51:45.934 --> 00:51:47.614
to these classic stories.

00:51:47.614 --> 00:51:55.114
And I think they're gonna do, and do justice to some of these stories that, you know, to a lot of X -Men fans aren't the best material.

00:51:55.134 --> 00:51:58.713
So I'm excited to see how they remix and approach Onslaught.

00:51:58.713 --> 00:52:02.853
In the next season, I want Magneto and Xavier to do like a fusion.

00:52:02.853 --> 00:52:04.043
The fusion dance?

00:52:04.043 --> 00:52:05.574
And they turn it on, Onslaught.

00:52:05.574 --> 00:52:08.074
It's like a fat version of Magneto.

00:52:08.074 --> 00:52:15.469
I gotta say this though, before I forget, because I know we got a couple more fun facts, but I gotta ask the question, and this is another fucking thing.

00:52:15.469 --> 00:52:35.510
in the MCU continuity or just the Marvel continuity, the X -Men continuity, you're telling me we have future fucking time travel, we got aliens, the Shi 'ar Empire, we got fucking Professor Xavier going into space, getting his freak on with an alien empress, and we still can't fix his goddamn spine?

00:52:38.286 --> 00:52:47.766
Keep the soup there there are certain things no comics you just don't touch, you know You don't yeah, you don't give Bruce's parents back You don't fix the thing either like you talk about mr.

00:52:47.766 --> 00:52:59.945
Fantastic the smartest man in the universe can't figure out how to fix his friend He got you better believe that he could like you Charles Xavier can't grow hair or be it'd be be able to walk like there are certain things just don't touch I can't believe I'm gonna bring this up but all day on Twitter today.

00:52:59.945 --> 00:53:08.706
I saw people reposting Seeing you guys remember that that excellent PlayStation fighting game and I cannot recall the name of it outside.

00:53:08.706 --> 00:53:31.065
I think it might have been called, it wasn't children of Adam, but it was an X-Men fighting game and Professor X was an unlockable character and they had him in his chair and he had some killer combos, but just looking back at it, it's like, why would you guys even throw Professor X into this fighting game and not have him in his She -R suit or something like that?

00:53:31.065 --> 00:53:31.266
So.

00:53:31.266 --> 00:53:31.565
Yeah.

00:53:31.565 --> 00:54:05.597
Yeah, we just kind of funny if they just threw him without his chair and he just had to like come on All right, the last two tidbits to share when Jean and Scott are sent forward in time 3960 ad they meet a tribe called the Eskani who are raising the young Nathan Summers in a post-apocalyptic Wasteland this is a nod to the 1994 for issue miniseries the adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix by writer Scott Lobdell and artist Jean Ha where a time display Scott, Summers and Jean Grey finally get the chance to raise their son under the alias Slim in Red.

00:54:05.597 --> 00:54:14.237
To further complicate matters, Mother Ascani was eventually revealed to be Rachel Summers, another child of Scott and Jean from a different, ultimate future.

00:54:14.237 --> 00:54:16.777
I'm sure that makes sense to everybody.

00:54:16.938 --> 00:54:22.617
And last but not least, the team was sent back in time to meet Nsab Anor, who is Apocalypse.

00:54:22.617 --> 00:54:28.398
This is how he looked in his original, in his origin comic, which is 1996's Rise of Apocalypse.

00:54:28.398 --> 00:54:31.077
by Terry Kavanaugh and Adam Polina.

00:54:31.077 --> 00:54:39.498
In this series, Egypt is ruled by King variant Ramu Tut and 3600 BC, which becomes an important plot point in Apocalypse's origin.

00:54:39.498 --> 00:54:52.177
Which if I can use this as a catapult to the ending, like this is how you do an ending for a show, but also set up, you know, the next season because there are so many story arcs.

00:54:52.177 --> 00:54:53.387
It isn't just one thing.

00:54:53.387 --> 00:54:56.846
It's like, okay, you've got Jane and Cyclops time displaced.

00:54:56.846 --> 00:55:00.755
And I guess that same thing could be said about Magneto, Xavier and beasts and all of them.

00:55:00.755 --> 00:55:02.666
They're also time misplaced as well.

00:55:02.666 --> 00:55:11.056
And then you've also got a proper time where it's Forge and Bishop having to reassemble the X -Men.

00:55:11.056 --> 00:55:14.565
And then there's the apocalypse and Gambit teaser at the end.

00:55:14.565 --> 00:55:15.065
You know what I'm saying?

00:55:15.065 --> 00:55:22.726
It's like so much thrown at you and only in the X -Men do you have an embarrassment of riches of stories to tell.

00:55:22.885 --> 00:55:26.253
And a little bit, part of me is a little trepid about...

00:55:26.253 --> 00:55:32.414
Okay, this is gonna be a lot to juggle and all these storylines to try to make cohesive.

00:55:32.454 --> 00:55:36.373
But I think my, I guess my confidence and faith is kind of high after this season.

00:55:36.373 --> 00:55:39.213
You know, it could easily go downhill from here, but my faith is kind of high.

00:55:39.213 --> 00:55:41.914
You can't doubt that they have the right approach to do it.

00:55:41.914 --> 00:55:43.173
But you know what?

00:55:43.173 --> 00:55:52.934
I say that my confidence is high after the season, but there is that thing in the back of my head where it's like, well, how much of this was DeMeo orchestrating this and keeping this together?

00:55:52.934 --> 00:55:56.465
Like, that is the part where I'm like, They got to get this shit fixed.

00:55:56.465 --> 00:55:59.545
I'm not saying that he was the only guy that wrote.

00:55:59.545 --> 00:56:08.615
I mean, obviously, like if you look at the credits, like certain episodes he did not write, you know, there's other writers involved and I'm not saying that they can't step up and make a great product, but.

00:56:08.615 --> 00:56:10.106
Well, they already got season two done.

00:56:10.106 --> 00:56:10.606
So.

00:56:10.606 --> 00:56:12.686
We're good for season two, at least.

00:56:12.686 --> 00:56:15.956
Season three is when we need to stop worrying, I think.

00:56:15.956 --> 00:56:17.166
We got a couple of years.

00:56:17.166 --> 00:56:17.626
Hopefully.

00:56:17.626 --> 00:56:17.726
All right.

00:56:17.726 --> 00:56:18.385
Thank you, Chris.

00:56:18.385 --> 00:56:20.166
I feel a lot better now.

00:56:20.166 --> 00:56:20.606
All right.

00:56:20.606 --> 00:56:22.576
We've talked about this show at Nausium.

00:56:22.576 --> 00:56:24.666
Clearly, we all liked it, but let's do our final thoughts here.

00:56:24.666 --> 00:56:26.016
Aaron, I'm going to pass the baton off to you.

00:56:26.016 --> 00:56:29.445
What are your final thoughts on X -Men 97 season one?

00:56:29.445 --> 00:56:30.405
Phenomenal job.

00:56:30.405 --> 00:56:38.862
Again, I take back the doubt that I had watching the first episode because I understand, like I said, it was a good transitional point from childhood to adult show.

00:56:38.862 --> 00:56:43.302
and that understanding that we all brought with us into a new generation of watching this.

00:56:43.302 --> 00:56:55.121
Again, very well done as somebody who, just like you Chris, who knows very little about the X -Men universe, they did everything very well to where I wasn't lost and I enjoyed it all and I'm really excited for the next season.

00:56:55.121 --> 00:56:55.771
Bader, how about you?

00:56:55.771 --> 00:57:07.411
Yeah, I'm gonna keep this brief because I feel like if you don't understand what, you know, if you didn't get my final thoughts out of all of this, then I don't know what to say, but I will keep it brief and say that I will give this four out of five David A.

00:57:07.411 --> 00:57:07.981
Wieners.

00:57:07.981 --> 00:57:09.081
Winer.

00:57:09.081 --> 00:57:11.742
I think, Winer, sorry, Winer.

00:57:12.641 --> 00:57:14.661
Trust me, that's why he's named after our ratings system.

00:57:14.661 --> 00:57:16.342
That's what we thought initially.

00:57:16.342 --> 00:57:26.402
Yeah, I think the only things that go against it is that I think the pacing in the beginning was a little sluggish and it took a while to finally get the bigger picture.

00:57:26.402 --> 00:57:30.161
Obviously, that could have just, I mean, this is my personal rating, so whatever.

00:57:30.161 --> 00:57:36.686
So for me, yeah, I think that the pacing in the beginning was a little sluggish and there are things that if I'm being real, I could have done without.

00:57:36.686 --> 00:57:46.385
Maybe the mojo episode of focus maybe in Aaron's point like maybe someone like cable or you know another character that Didn't get as much spotlight, but that's maybe being a little selfish.

00:57:46.385 --> 00:57:54.976
The show is damn near perfect, but I'm a little hesitant to call it perfect If I'm being honest, but a four out of five is strong as hell.

00:57:54.976 --> 00:57:57.976
So four out of five I'm gonna give it a three point five by the way.

00:57:57.976 --> 00:57:58.905
Okay, three point five.

00:57:58.905 --> 00:58:02.246
Okay Now I don't feel bad at all for yeah all day.

00:58:02.246 --> 00:58:03.226
That's a plus.

00:58:03.226 --> 00:58:10.797
I'll tell you guys In the history of the Oblivion Bar podcast, I've only given one thing five stars, and that was Top Gun Maverick.

00:58:10.797 --> 00:58:13.557
And we've reviewed a lot of things, haven't we, Aaron?

00:58:13.557 --> 00:58:14.938
A lot of things on the show.

00:58:14.938 --> 00:58:16.257
Actually, I do remember that episode.

00:58:16.257 --> 00:58:17.427
I do remember listening to that episode.

00:58:17.427 --> 00:58:31.789
One might argue that we talk about too many things, but I'll tell you, X -Men 97 is the poster child of what DC should do, what any other adaptation into a comic book.

00:58:31.789 --> 00:58:32.630
kind of story.

00:58:32.630 --> 00:58:35.550
I know I'm not, I'm just kind of spinning my wheels trying to figure out how to describe what this is.

00:58:35.550 --> 00:58:41.730
But you know, when you adapt comics into other media, I think X -Men 97 is the perfect version of that.

00:58:41.730 --> 00:58:45.469
Me personally, like I said, issue, or not issue, issue.

00:58:45.489 --> 00:58:48.250
Episode four was kind of slower, but I still enjoyed it.

00:58:48.250 --> 00:58:50.809
Like I said, it was my least favorite, but it was not bad by any stretch.

00:58:50.809 --> 00:58:57.690
And what I think what we're able to learn from these characters just in a short 10 episodes is pretty incredible.

00:58:57.690 --> 00:59:00.717
I think a lot of people had some reservations about the way it looked initially.

00:59:00.717 --> 00:59:02.307
But I think those were put to bed pretty quickly.

00:59:02.307 --> 00:59:10.878
The moment that you saw Scott falling from the earth and uses his concussion blast to land safely, I was like, OK, we're in good hands here.

00:59:10.878 --> 00:59:18.217
And I just I feel like this tickles every part of my brain that I love in terms of adaptation with comics.

00:59:18.217 --> 00:59:21.478
Like the only thing better than this is the comics in my opinion.

00:59:21.478 --> 00:59:25.478
So I'm going to do something for the second time in the history of the Oblivion Bar podcast.

00:59:25.478 --> 00:59:27.608
I'm going to give X -Men 97 a five out of five David A.

00:59:27.608 --> 00:59:28.757
Weiner's.

00:59:28.757 --> 00:59:28.958
my.

00:59:28.958 --> 00:59:29.934
I've been mad at that.

00:59:29.934 --> 00:59:35.653
You know, and that was a great recap and rating and justification, Chris.

00:59:35.653 --> 00:59:41.014
I wanna go back and say, I said that the show kinda maybe suffered from being sluggish.

00:59:41.014 --> 00:59:43.364
What I meant, I don't think the show was sluggish at all.

00:59:43.364 --> 00:59:53.373
I think the show sometimes was almost too much, too fast, where you thought you'd settle into a story or you were getting familiar and then it was like on to the next.

00:59:53.373 --> 00:59:54.994
You want a little more time to breathe?

00:59:54.994 --> 01:00:03.150
Yeah, yeah, and I think maybe there were, also, like my comic book head is like, no, I, this is not how the inferno ends or why do we only give it one episode?

01:00:03.150 --> 01:00:13.760
So I think sometimes it was almost too fast, but when you look at it holistically, you're like, okay, yeah, they had a theme and story to go for, but I ain't mad at her perfect rating.

01:00:13.760 --> 01:00:19.150
I mean, if anything deserves it, this show is a easy, you know, easy debate.

01:00:19.150 --> 01:00:26.349
I can't, you know, I appreciate that Chris has given this and Top Gun, because again, to each their own.

01:00:26.349 --> 01:00:27.969
you know, however you take it, however you...

01:00:27.969 --> 01:00:29.289
There were some amazing things.

01:00:29.289 --> 01:00:31.349
The show did some amazing things.

01:00:31.349 --> 01:00:32.869
But to be honest, this wasn't...

01:00:32.869 --> 01:00:35.570
This is one of those things where I wasn't like, I need to watch it.

01:00:35.570 --> 01:00:35.929
I need to watch...

01:00:35.929 --> 01:00:40.820
Like, I wanted to finish it because it was really, really good, but I didn't need to, like, finish it in a day.

01:00:40.820 --> 01:00:43.409
There are other things that I could have done, you know.

01:00:43.409 --> 01:00:45.369
So for me, it's not necessarily a perfect...

01:00:45.369 --> 01:00:50.679
But also, again, that's the relationship that I have with the X -Men and some of the characters in it.

01:00:50.679 --> 01:00:54.539
But yeah, I appreciate you giving it a four or a five.

01:00:54.539 --> 01:00:55.885
Give me five out of five.

01:00:55.885 --> 01:01:01.405
I think for me a 3 .5 is, is yeah, that's not, that's, that's where I want to be at.

01:01:01.405 --> 01:01:04.405
Hey, look, man, this is, this is a personal rating type thing, man.

01:01:04.405 --> 01:01:08.186
I think it's very interesting that when you look at the oblivion bar, I feel like I'm the guest.

01:01:08.186 --> 01:01:11.065
He's like explaining the rating scheme.

01:01:11.065 --> 01:01:12.255
This is like, this is all you, man.

01:01:12.255 --> 01:01:13.275
You do what you want to do.

01:01:13.275 --> 01:01:15.346
And I'm over here saying wiener.

01:01:16.186 --> 01:01:18.885
Again, that's why, that's why he's named by me already.

01:01:18.885 --> 01:01:20.306
I know my place.

01:01:20.365 --> 01:01:22.925
Well, I'll tell you like you fucking guessed.

01:01:24.302 --> 01:01:26.661
You're going to sit back in the third chair right now, mister.

01:01:26.661 --> 01:01:30.452
You might as well, the way you said it was like, you basically called me a mutie.

01:01:30.452 --> 01:01:33.902
You know, like some of the derogatory terms that you use, an X -Men, mutie.

01:01:33.902 --> 01:01:35.842
You're like a mudblood and a mutie.

01:01:35.842 --> 01:01:38.561
I was always just thinking, you mudblood.

01:01:38.561 --> 01:01:41.672
I'll tell you, I mean, five out of five feels good to me.

01:01:41.672 --> 01:01:45.132
And I'll tell you the reason why is because I was genuinely - It feels good to me.

01:01:45.132 --> 01:01:59.626
It's because what you had just said there, Bodder, I think that's where I decided initially that like, this has the legs to be my ideal version of the series is that- Throughout the week, if I had a moment where I had sort of a lull in entertainment, which we just have entertainment being thrown at our face constantly.

01:01:59.626 --> 01:02:00.826
We're eating good, boy.

01:02:00.826 --> 01:02:05.065
Wednesday was not only an event for new comics, but now it's an event for new X-Men.

01:02:05.065 --> 01:02:06.706
I'm so weird.

01:02:06.706 --> 01:02:14.876
And you know, man, sometimes just being a part of the moment, I think you get a certain lens to it.

01:02:14.876 --> 01:02:17.358
Some people would call it rose -colored lens.

01:02:17.358 --> 01:02:23.217
And I think maybe that could be true, maybe in the hindsight, years from now we'll look at this and maybe there'll be some more flaws.

01:02:23.217 --> 01:02:38.597
But, you know, man, just being in the moment and seeing the excitement for this show and, you know, like people, you know, our age and older talking like, I'm watching this show on Saturdays, bringing me back to being a kid watching Saturday cartoons.

01:02:38.597 --> 01:02:44.628
And, you know, the fact that new episodes were dropping on new comic book day as people that, you know, Wednesday Warriors, like, you know what I'm saying?

01:02:44.628 --> 01:02:46.989
Like there was an energy and air to this.

01:02:46.989 --> 01:02:49.179
that I'm already, I think I'm already going to miss.

01:02:49.179 --> 01:02:58.960
But I wanna go ahead and say, and I wish I would have brought this up earlier so it wasn't buried until the end, but there is one more episode coming out, but it's technically the making of.

01:02:58.960 --> 01:03:01.369
You know, Marvel Studios has been doing like these.

01:03:01.369 --> 01:03:02.849
The assembled episodes?

01:03:02.849 --> 01:03:04.309
Yeah, the assembled episodes.

01:03:04.309 --> 01:03:10.849
And I was so happy to learn that they're not skipping that for this, you know, even though it's animated.

01:03:10.849 --> 01:03:15.597
I guess they did it for what if, but they're doing like a behind the scenes documentary type thing.

01:03:15.597 --> 01:03:22.007
for this and I think that's a nice send off to have a chance to appreciate what went into making this.

01:03:22.007 --> 01:03:24.307
Because I think this story is fascinating too.

01:03:24.307 --> 01:03:29.277
The fact that they resurrected this, they brought in the OG creators and all that.

01:03:29.277 --> 01:03:31.708
So I think honoring that is important too.

01:03:31.708 --> 01:03:37.557
If they don't talk about why Bo Dumeo is so obsessed with OnlyFans during that simple episode, then what are we doing here?

01:03:37.557 --> 01:03:38.378
I need to know what's going on.

01:03:38.378 --> 01:03:40.398
It's gonna be just B -roll of him just staring at you.

01:03:40.398 --> 01:03:41.518
my God.

01:03:41.557 --> 01:03:45.518
If there's a scene at some point in the series where you just see him scrolling.

01:03:45.518 --> 01:03:47.458
And like has the thousand -yard stare.

01:03:47.458 --> 01:03:48.378
We know what he's looking at.

01:03:48.378 --> 01:03:49.438
We know what he's looking at.

01:03:49.438 --> 01:03:50.307
He's jacking off in the corner.

01:03:50.307 --> 01:03:51.288
We're like, okay.

01:03:51.288 --> 01:03:53.318
I guess you got to get fired.

01:03:53.536 --> 01:03:57.128
All right, everybody that'll do it for our review of X -Men 97.

01:03:57.128 --> 01:04:01.556
Let's get into my favorite segment here on the oblivion bar podcast, Aaron's arcade.

01:04:03.342 --> 01:04:06.405
It's time for Aaron's Arcade.

Did you guys catch that?

01:04:32.005 --> 01:04:33.045
Yeah.

01:04:33.045 --> 01:04:33.826
Just checking.

01:04:33.826 --> 01:04:34.565
Okay.

01:04:34.565 --> 01:04:36.865
The galaxy's OBP.

01:04:36.865 --> 01:04:37.056
Okay.

01:04:37.056 --> 01:04:37.295
Cool.

01:04:37.295 --> 01:04:37.606
All right.

01:04:37.606 --> 01:04:38.206
Go ahead.

01:04:38.206 --> 01:04:38.965
Can I finish?

01:04:38.965 --> 01:04:40.905
I'm gonna let you finish.

01:04:40.905 --> 01:04:42.666
I'm gonna let you, but I'm gonna need that code.

01:04:42.666 --> 01:04:43.096
Yeah.

01:04:43.096 --> 01:04:44.206
OBP at checkout.

01:04:44.206 --> 01:04:44.416
Okay.

01:04:44.416 --> 01:04:44.996
It stacks.

01:04:44.996 --> 01:04:45.346
All right.

01:04:45.346 --> 01:04:46.606
Stacks.

01:04:46.726 --> 01:04:49.038
the galaxy's last line of defense.

01:04:49.038 --> 01:04:57.217
enlist in the Helldivers and join the fight for freedom across the hostile galaxy in a fast, frantic, and ferocious third -person shooter.

01:04:57.217 --> 01:04:59.998
How about a nice cup of liberty?

01:05:00.797 --> 01:05:04.347
All right, so I am playing Helldivers 2.

01:05:04.347 --> 01:05:14.797
If you guys haven't heard from Patreon, or we're on our Patreon show, The Grid, man, Helldivers 2 is probably the most fun I have ever had in a, like, online game.

01:05:14.797 --> 01:05:15.858
I have ever played.

01:05:15.858 --> 01:05:23.588
Like normally I hate teams where I have to, or I hate games where I have to be teamed up with people, but this game is phenomenal and it is so much fun.

01:05:23.588 --> 01:05:26.688
You literally kind of create your own background to the story.

01:05:26.688 --> 01:05:28.418
Like there's no real like storyline.

01:05:28.418 --> 01:05:30.717
It's just think of like Starship Troopers.

01:05:30.717 --> 01:05:33.867
You have this galaxy, the humans are at war.

01:05:33.867 --> 01:05:34.987
There's three different factions.

01:05:34.987 --> 01:05:38.068
There's humans, there's the automatons, and then there's the bugs.

01:05:38.068 --> 01:05:40.018
The only good bug is a dead bug.

01:05:40.018 --> 01:05:40.657
Okay.

01:05:40.657 --> 01:05:41.581
And.

01:05:41.581 --> 01:05:44.382
You get to choose who you fight against on different missions.

01:05:44.382 --> 01:05:50.061
You can go to the automatons side of the galaxy or you can go to the bug side of the galaxy, but you're always going to be a hell diver.

01:05:50.061 --> 01:05:52.842
You drop into the planet with your basic loadout.

01:05:52.842 --> 01:06:04.342
You get to change and customize your, your stratagems, which are these like codes that you put in kind of like up down, left, right, left, right down, you know, and then you throw this little orb and then you get like this, like just, I don't know what do you call it?

01:06:04.342 --> 01:06:08.362
Like a, like a supply drop from space where it's whatever you're calling it.

01:06:08.362 --> 01:06:11.405
Sometimes it it's, well, it's like, it's like, it's like literally just, just.

01:06:11.405 --> 01:06:13.115
boom, it just lands in front of you.

01:06:13.115 --> 01:06:23.606
Sometimes it has like a cool down, whatever, but you can order guns, you can order like support items, like backpacks that have like these like roving laser rifles on them.

01:06:24.025 --> 01:06:25.706
It's like, it's so customizable.

01:06:25.706 --> 01:06:27.965
The loadouts are so amazing.

01:06:28.286 --> 01:06:31.456
The character development, like it really isn't anything.

01:06:31.456 --> 01:06:35.025
The only thing you can kind of change is your helmet, your cape and your armor.

01:06:35.045 --> 01:06:38.414
Not all of them have different effects, but some of them do.

01:06:38.414 --> 01:06:41.813
Like there's engineers, there's heavy armor and there's medium level armor.

01:06:41.813 --> 01:06:53.434
And sometimes a lot of you have like extra grenades or extra stimpaks, but literally, literally you're in a team of four going around this, this, this planet or different parts of this planet, you know, doing different missions.

01:06:53.434 --> 01:06:57.813
And it is like, you can do a, each mission at most is 40 minutes.

01:06:57.813 --> 01:07:00.134
You can do it in 10, you can do it in five.

01:07:00.134 --> 01:07:01.634
You can do the, take it the entire time.

01:07:01.634 --> 01:07:08.293
And you literally have to defend your, your extraction point for about two minutes before your, your Pelican comes in and saves you.

01:07:08.333 --> 01:07:09.974
So much fucking fun.

01:07:09.974 --> 01:07:13.474
Like I cannot, I have been obsessed with this game since I first loaded it up.

01:07:13.474 --> 01:07:13.753
Okay.

01:07:13.753 --> 01:07:14.974
So again, there's barely a story.

01:07:14.974 --> 01:07:16.213
You kind of make it up as you go.

01:07:16.213 --> 01:07:27.614
The community has such an involvement, like the, Airhead Studios who created it issued like last weekend, you had to destroy the entire community had to destroy 2 billion, automaton robots.

01:07:27.614 --> 01:07:35.164
Unfortunately, the community, if they, if they did destroy all 2 billion, they would have unlocked a special new like weapon, but they didn't.

01:07:35.164 --> 01:07:37.324
They only got 78 % of the way there.

01:07:37.324 --> 01:07:38.349
So they failed it.

01:07:38.349 --> 01:07:46.079
So yeah, it was crazy, but it's so fun because they're literally issuing this kill order to the entire player base of this game.

01:07:46.079 --> 01:07:50.590
And it's just, you all have to work as this like entire army and it's so much fun.

01:07:50.590 --> 01:07:51.699
I love the game.

01:07:51.699 --> 01:07:53.340
So I highly recommend it.

01:07:53.340 --> 01:07:58.920
If I'm going to give anything a five out of five, I'm going to get Helldivers 2 a five out of five David A.

01:07:58.920 --> 01:08:00.230
Winer's on the game scale.

01:08:00.230 --> 01:08:03.829
So fuck that Chris, fuck your five out of five.

01:08:03.829 --> 01:08:04.349
Okay.

01:08:04.349 --> 01:08:05.293
How about some nice.

01:08:05.293 --> 01:08:06.833
A nice cup of liberty.

01:08:06.833 --> 01:08:07.393
You know what I'm saying?

01:08:07.393 --> 01:08:08.264
This game is so much fun.

01:08:08.264 --> 01:08:09.063
Go check it out.

01:08:09.063 --> 01:08:11.134
Again, you guys can check me out.

01:08:11.434 --> 01:08:15.153
Actually, I shouldn't say it anymore because I don't really stream anymore.

01:08:15.153 --> 01:08:16.814
You can go to your Twitch channel.

01:08:16.814 --> 01:08:17.953
I just won't be streaming there.

01:08:17.953 --> 01:08:19.514
Yeah, I just won't be streaming there.

01:08:19.654 --> 01:08:19.873
Yeah.

01:08:19.873 --> 01:08:20.993
Go play Hell Dive or Sue.

01:08:20.993 --> 01:08:22.833
Can they add you as a friend online?

01:08:22.833 --> 01:08:23.493
Yeah, yeah.

01:08:23.493 --> 01:08:25.684
So you can find me like my Steam code or whatever.

01:08:25.684 --> 01:08:32.622
I'll put it on my social media, but I'm at Better Actions on Twitter, at Better Actions on, at Better Actions TTV on Instagram.

01:08:32.622 --> 01:08:38.981
I'll put my friend code on there, my Steam code, people can add me, we can go on submissions and fuckin' you know, spread some democracy.

01:08:39.122 --> 01:08:41.782
Spread some controlled democracy, man, it's fuckin' awesome.

01:08:41.782 --> 01:08:45.362
All right, let's go to my favorite part of the show.

01:08:45.421 --> 01:08:48.287
Good to your friend of mine, Chris's Corner.

01:08:50.510 --> 01:08:53.637
It's time for Chris's Corner.

01:08:58.381 --> 01:09:32.054
Alrighty this week for Christmas corner we're gonna be talking about doom number one written by Sanford green and Jonathan Hickman Illustrated by Stanford green and in the near future doom alone must save the Marvel universe legendary creators Jonathan Hickman and Sanford green send dr Doom on a journey unlike he has ever undertaken before with Valeria Richard at his by aside doom goes on a quest to harness more power than any human has ever wielded before in order to stop Galactus from bringing about the death of the universe now I want to give a big big shout out to our special co -host here this week, Bodder, who had Sanford Green on his show last week.

01:09:32.054 --> 01:09:33.814
It was a great conversation.

01:09:33.993 --> 01:09:41.094
And we actually read this comic, Bodder, I can say now he shared it with me a while ago and it was very good.

01:09:41.274 --> 01:09:43.234
And everyone knows I'm a giant Doctor Doom fan.

01:09:43.234 --> 01:09:46.234
He's my favorite villain in all of com.

01:09:46.234 --> 01:09:47.234
I won't even say villain.

01:09:47.234 --> 01:09:53.314
I'll make a bold claim here that I think Doctor Doom is the greatest anti -hero in all of comics.

01:09:53.314 --> 01:09:56.453
And he is one of my favorite just characters in general.

01:09:56.453 --> 01:10:01.001
I'm, I'm, As I'm recording here with everyone, as I'm talking to you currently, I'm looking at multiple Dr.

01:10:01.001 --> 01:10:04.122
Doom commissions behind me, you know, in my recording studio.

01:10:04.122 --> 01:10:08.462
So big, big fan of Victor Von Doom, excited to eventually see him in the MCU.

01:10:08.622 --> 01:10:12.782
This comic is exactly what I want from like a Dr.

01:10:12.782 --> 01:10:13.742
Doom comic.

01:10:13.742 --> 01:10:18.832
It's sort of just brain candy and well, brain candy implies that it's stupid.

01:10:18.832 --> 01:10:19.981
It's not, it's not stupid.

01:10:19.981 --> 01:10:22.301
It's just, it's just action wall to wall.

01:10:22.301 --> 01:10:28.037
Like, We get the introduction of what Doom is doing, what Valyria is there for, and then after that is madness.

01:10:28.257 --> 01:10:29.837
So, Botter, do you want to speak on this at all?

01:10:29.837 --> 01:10:31.377
Since you had Sanford on the show last week.

01:10:31.377 --> 01:10:41.167
You know, I'm actually really excited to hear that this book resonated with you so much because I know how much you revere and really liked the character of Dr.

01:10:41.167 --> 01:10:42.408
Doom because Dr.

01:10:42.408 --> 01:10:45.188
Doom fans are sort of like Storm fans.

01:10:45.188 --> 01:10:46.408
Like there isn't no middle ground.

01:10:46.408 --> 01:10:48.707
Like you really either really like Dr.

01:10:48.707 --> 01:10:51.478
Doom or you don't really know how to feel about them.

01:10:51.908 --> 01:10:52.525
this.

01:10:52.525 --> 01:10:59.086
particularly comic, I think also, you know, same way that X -Men 97 kind of made me like a new, you know, diehard Storm fan.

01:10:59.086 --> 01:11:03.445
This is one of those books where even if you don't know the lore of Dr.

01:11:03.445 --> 01:11:09.586
Doom or all the big moments and, and whatnot, you could read this and have a new appreciation for him.

01:11:09.586 --> 01:11:14.076
And just overall, it's just a fun, action-filled, great looking book.

01:11:14.076 --> 01:11:21.902
And I guess there's another layer for me, the fact that I had an opportunity to talk to Sanford and, you know, we had a two hour discussion and...

01:11:21.902 --> 01:11:23.561
had the interview and whatnot.

01:11:23.561 --> 01:11:25.061
He is so likable.

01:11:25.061 --> 01:11:26.702
He's humble.

01:11:26.702 --> 01:11:30.822
He's soft -spoken, extremely intelligent, extremely gifted.

01:11:30.822 --> 01:11:32.981
And there's just so much likability to him.

01:11:32.981 --> 01:11:42.181
And then hearing how much he reveres the character and how long he's been a fan, you see that come through in this book.

01:11:42.181 --> 01:11:44.601
You know that it's a labor of love.

01:11:44.601 --> 01:11:48.381
And I think even if you don't listen to the interview, you can appreciate the book.

01:11:48.381 --> 01:11:51.533
But there's something more that I appreciate this book after talking to him.

01:11:51.533 --> 01:11:57.474
just knowing that his mission was to put Doom on the map and this being a love letter to the character.

01:11:57.474 --> 01:12:03.934
I think it's a great, it is a solid one shot and I'm here for more giant size one shots.

01:12:03.934 --> 01:12:11.543
I think the only minutia critique I could have is that I think I just, and this is just coming full greed, I just want more.

01:12:11.543 --> 01:12:23.078
I kind of wish it would have ended in maybe a little more clear way, but when you talk to Sanford, he says that Marvel offered him the opportunity to, do more, make this like a mini series.

01:12:23.078 --> 01:12:25.728
And he was like, nah, I'm gonna tell my story and I'm a bounce.

01:12:25.728 --> 01:12:29.547
And I respect this shit out of that artistry that he just wanted to tell a story.

01:12:29.547 --> 01:12:31.318
He didn't go for the cash grab.

01:12:31.318 --> 01:12:33.297
And we got such a great book.

01:12:33.297 --> 01:12:46.278
And I thought I was saying like a hot take when I said it on the interview, but I've seen this kind of echoed online as well, that this is probably one of some of his best artwork out there, which is saying a lot, because the man is extremely talented.

01:12:46.278 --> 01:12:48.173
Like you look at a bit of Root or even...

01:12:48.173 --> 01:13:21.113
You know his stuff his work on DC and just over the years it's all been great But there's something about this like it really comes through the pages that doom is one of his favorite characters that he took this seriously and the fact that you know He's he's credited as co -writer But if we're being real and I've also seen this online that a lot of people are They see Hickman and you know, it's a doom book and they automatically think Hickman wrote this and I do want to state that in the interview He says like Hickman was very, I won't say hands off, but he was like, hey, this is your story.

01:13:21.113 --> 01:13:24.533
I'm here for the ride and I'm just gonna help where I can.

01:13:24.554 --> 01:13:33.293
So, kudos to Sanford Green for not only drawing a great book, but writing an awesome, awesome story and just summation of Dr.

01:13:33.293 --> 01:13:34.434
Doom as a character.

01:13:34.434 --> 01:13:37.213
Yeah, when you read it too, it's not a Hickman book.

01:13:37.213 --> 01:13:43.323
You maybe see some seeds of Hickman, but like Hickman has a very heady sort of over-explained - For sure.

01:13:43.323 --> 01:13:44.729
Sort of narrative.

01:13:44.877 --> 01:13:49.618
I gotta say this, I gotta give credit to Greg and the first issue club for this joke.

01:13:49.618 --> 01:13:53.467
But Greg, I listened to their episode today and Greg spotlighted Doom.

01:13:53.467 --> 01:13:55.057
So I think it's cool that you spotlighted Doom.

01:13:55.057 --> 01:13:56.908
I had Sanford on and Greg brought it up.

01:13:56.908 --> 01:13:58.377
Greg might say you like.

01:13:58.377 --> 01:14:04.537
But Greg said, you know, this isn't a Hickman book because you didn't have to read any emails or charts.

01:14:04.537 --> 01:14:06.057
You didn't need to decipher anything.

01:14:06.057 --> 01:14:07.627
It's been on my head all day.

01:14:07.627 --> 01:14:07.877
Yeah.

01:14:07.877 --> 01:14:09.318
This came out recently, right?

01:14:09.318 --> 01:14:11.398
Yeah, Wednesday of this week.

01:14:11.398 --> 01:14:11.677
Yeah.

01:14:11.677 --> 01:14:12.046
OK.

01:14:12.046 --> 01:14:16.376
man, I didn't grab this one, I wanted to, I knew it, like I saw this one, I was like, I wanna read this.

01:14:16.376 --> 01:14:29.345
I think this is a book that a couple years from now will be in conversation of like, some of the all time great one shots, like even the ending aside, I think that all the rest of it is perfection.

01:14:29.345 --> 01:14:29.934
Yeah.

01:14:29.934 --> 01:14:32.113
And also speaking of Doom, he shows up in X -Men 97.

01:14:32.113 --> 01:14:32.863
We didn't mention that.

01:14:32.863 --> 01:14:34.863
He shows up during a meeting at one point.

01:14:34.863 --> 01:14:35.613
I forgot to mention that.

01:14:35.613 --> 01:14:39.274
Yeah, because him and Baron Zemar are both like, yo, we're not that evil.

01:14:39.274 --> 01:14:41.993
Relaxed.

01:14:41.993 --> 01:14:42.854
You're a little far.

01:14:42.854 --> 01:14:45.873
And it was the same thing with The Rocketeer.

01:14:45.873 --> 01:14:54.713
There's this mobster and he finds out that Neville Sinclair, who's the baddie of the movie, he's like, yeah, I'm a fucking criminal, but I don't work with Nazis.

01:14:54.713 --> 01:14:56.234
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

01:14:56.234 --> 01:14:58.957
I think Carnage and Joker have that exchange.

01:14:58.957 --> 01:15:03.078
Doesn't Joker do that to the Red Skull as well during the Amalcom comics or something?

01:15:03.078 --> 01:15:03.438
okay.

01:15:03.438 --> 01:15:03.868
I'm sorry.

01:15:03.868 --> 01:15:05.007
Yeah, I'm mistaken.

01:15:05.007 --> 01:15:05.497
Yeah.

01:15:05.497 --> 01:15:07.158
I thought Carnage and Joker had a...

01:15:07.158 --> 01:15:09.478
I think they do have a moment where - They could have a moment too.

01:15:09.756 --> 01:15:12.917
Where Carnage realizes, shit, you are insane.

01:15:12.917 --> 01:15:17.497
But to your point, I think there's a scene with Red Skull and Joker and Joker's like, whoa, buddy.

01:15:17.497 --> 01:15:21.518
I'm a psychopathic murderer, but I'm not a Nazi.

01:15:21.518 --> 01:15:24.297
There is no filter with who I kill.

01:15:24.297 --> 01:15:25.158
I kill everybody.

01:15:25.158 --> 01:15:26.908
But I didn't know that was a Rocketeer joke.

01:15:26.908 --> 01:15:27.347
That's cool.

01:15:27.347 --> 01:15:27.717
Thank you, Aaron.

01:15:27.717 --> 01:15:28.301
Yeah.

01:15:28.301 --> 01:15:34.591
No, I the one thing I was always just thinking about this doom cover is Maria Wolf did a one in 25 ratio.

01:15:34.591 --> 01:15:35.971
yeah, and it's sick.

01:15:35.971 --> 01:15:39.042
And I wish I would have grabbed it at C2E2 speaking about C2E2.

01:15:39.042 --> 01:15:41.421
It was there, but something I don't know.

01:15:41.421 --> 01:15:47.061
I was like, I know I'm going to get the A cover and I got that really nice painted cover.

01:15:47.061 --> 01:15:47.641
Have your grandma.

01:15:47.641 --> 01:15:48.061
Yeah.

01:15:48.061 --> 01:15:48.421
Yeah.

01:15:48.421 --> 01:15:48.841
Yeah.

01:15:48.841 --> 01:15:49.101
Yeah.

01:15:49.101 --> 01:15:50.221
So yeah.

01:15:50.221 --> 01:15:50.862
Do number one.

01:15:50.862 --> 01:15:51.572
Highly recommend.

01:15:51.572 --> 01:15:52.561
I cannot recommend enough.

01:15:52.561 --> 01:15:57.811
I told Bada the other day, I read it three times in a row after I read it back to back to back and it's a double it's double size.

01:15:57.811 --> 01:15:58.253
So.

01:15:58.253 --> 01:16:03.304
That'll do it for Chris's Corner and that'll do it for episode 156 of the Oblivion Bar podcast.

01:16:03.304 --> 01:16:04.533
I almost forgot for a moment.

01:16:04.533 --> 01:16:07.234
Before we head out of here, Bodder, thank you so much for hanging out with us all night.

01:16:07.234 --> 01:16:09.814
Thanks for talking all things X -Men 97.

01:16:09.814 --> 01:16:14.253
Before we end the show, can you tell the folks how they can find you, how they can find the short box?

01:16:14.253 --> 01:16:18.673
Look, I know how good of a host and producer Chris is.

01:16:18.673 --> 01:16:21.264
I know that he's going to have all of that shit in these show notes.

01:16:21.264 --> 01:16:29.710
So I'm going to say if you want to check out the short box podcast, if you enjoyed my blabbering, these last two hours or however long this episode comes out.

01:16:29.710 --> 01:16:31.090
We're probably splitting it too.

01:16:31.529 --> 01:16:32.069
that'd be great.

01:16:32.069 --> 01:16:32.449
Yeah.

01:16:32.449 --> 01:16:34.479
Then come on over to the short box.

01:16:34.479 --> 01:16:40.909
I've got plenty of episodes with Chris on there if you need like a, you know, to dip your toe in and you need some familiar voice.

01:16:40.909 --> 01:16:43.210
But like I said, I've been doing this since 2012.

01:16:43.210 --> 01:16:44.649
I've interviewed a lot of people.

01:16:44.649 --> 01:16:45.850
I've covered a lot of topics.

01:16:45.850 --> 01:16:50.189
I've got a great set of co -hosts as well in some of those older episodes.

01:16:50.189 --> 01:16:53.198
And I think if you enjoy the Oblivion Bar podcast.

01:16:53.198 --> 01:16:55.377
And I think you'll enjoy the short box.

01:16:55.377 --> 01:16:55.797
And thank you.

01:16:55.797 --> 01:16:57.568
And I want to say thank you guys for having me on, man.

01:16:57.568 --> 01:17:01.868
This was a really big honor and always been a fan of the show.

01:17:01.868 --> 01:17:08.398
And I think you guys have one of the best chemistry, some of the best chemistry in all of comic podcasting.

01:17:08.398 --> 01:17:09.487
That's my boo right there.

01:17:09.487 --> 01:17:10.127
That's my boo.

01:17:10.127 --> 01:17:11.028
I'm pointing at Aaron right now.

01:17:11.028 --> 01:17:13.417
You guys, you can't see it, but it's with its penis.

01:17:16.037 --> 01:17:19.377
It's with my, what Bodder said earlier, my nerd boner.

01:17:20.974 --> 01:17:22.014
All right, Aaron, take us out of here.

01:17:22.014 --> 01:17:23.384
Take us out of episode one.

01:17:23.993 --> 01:17:25.293
fine.

01:17:25.293 --> 01:17:26.594

Camel comic book couples counseling.

01:17:52.341 --> 01:17:53.301
I almost had it.

01:17:53.301 --> 01:17:54.192
It's getting to the point.

01:17:54.192 --> 01:17:55.332
You can't do it.

01:17:55.332 --> 01:17:56.082
It's getting longer.

01:17:56.082 --> 01:17:56.761

01:18:26.938 --> 01:18:32.597
Don't forget to tip your bartenders 20 % or more or Chris and Bodder will double team you.

01:18:32.597 --> 01:18:33.497
Damn right.

01:18:33.497 --> 01:18:41.597
And if I may say, if I may also try to make Oblivion Bar History and toss in another five out of five, five out of five attempt right there, Aaron.

01:18:41.597 --> 01:18:42.057
Thank you.

01:18:42.057 --> 01:18:43.438
I give that attempt five out of five.

01:18:43.438 --> 01:18:45.997
I was really impressed by the one breath take.

01:18:45.997 --> 01:18:47.297
reading of the patrons list.

01:18:47.297 --> 01:18:49.438
There's been a couple of times where he's got it all in one take.

01:18:49.438 --> 01:18:50.087
So that's impressive.

01:18:50.087 --> 01:18:52.247
I just need to like it's a practice thing.

01:18:52.247 --> 01:18:55.877
It's like you got to you got to get those lungs as tight as you can.

01:18:55.877 --> 01:18:59.398
Everyone next week for episode one fifty seven, we're going to be covering Furiosa.

01:18:59.398 --> 01:19:03.278
We're going back to Australia, back to the Mad Max franchise.

01:19:03.278 --> 01:19:05.997
So be on the lookout for that review of Furiosa.

01:19:05.997 --> 01:19:08.198
Very excited to see that next week with you, Aaron.

01:19:08.198 --> 01:19:10.028
So you know what I did before this episode?

01:19:10.028 --> 01:19:10.818
What's that?

01:19:10.818 --> 01:19:13.537
I rewatched Mad Max, Fury Road again.

01:19:13.537 --> 01:19:15.405
I cannot wait to read.

01:19:15.405 --> 01:19:16.046
Watch that.

01:19:16.046 --> 01:19:17.506
That is like one of my favorite movies.

01:19:17.506 --> 01:19:24.565
That is one of the few movies I've ever seen three times in theater back to back and I cannot wait to rewatch it to prepare for Furious.

01:19:24.565 --> 01:19:25.886
So you're a Mad Max fan.

01:19:25.886 --> 01:19:26.506
I'll be honest.

01:19:26.506 --> 01:19:28.426
I've never watched the old ones.

01:19:28.426 --> 01:19:33.735
It's Mad Max, Fury Road was like, you know, that movie single -handedly got me into the franchise.

01:19:33.735 --> 01:19:34.805
I should probably go back and rewatch it.

01:19:34.805 --> 01:19:35.576
That's not rare either.

01:19:35.576 --> 01:19:37.985
I think a lot of people started with Fury Road.

01:19:37.985 --> 01:19:41.546
Mel Gibson did really, really good in the originals.

01:19:41.546 --> 01:19:43.622
They're, they're, they're.

01:19:43.757 --> 01:19:50.717
They follow the same premise as a lot of early like movie franchises where they just kind of get bonkier, like, you know, we're in weirder.

01:19:50.717 --> 01:20:05.368
I will say this, however, without Mad Max walking, crawling and walking, we would not have had water world with Kevin Costner, Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson had to walk.

01:20:05.368 --> 01:20:06.858
So Kevin Costner could run.

01:20:06.858 --> 01:20:08.978
I'm just saying that one of those is the greatest.

01:20:08.978 --> 01:20:10.417
One of the greatest franchises of all time.

01:20:10.417 --> 01:20:12.122
And the other one is water world.

01:20:12.362 --> 01:20:22.231
One of them is an amazing attempt at being a great franchise and the other one is starred by an anti -semitic asshole.

01:20:22.231 --> 01:20:23.891
that's yeah, you're not wrong there.

01:20:23.891 --> 01:20:37.011
But I will say this, if you love Mad Max Fury Road, you will love the fact that if you go back and watch it, there is a lot of lore that follows the evolution of the Mad Max series.

01:20:37.011 --> 01:20:45.315
There's a lot of lore that goes into it and how We who we think is Max may not actually be Okay.

01:20:45.315 --> 01:20:46.926
Thank you Aaron.

01:20:46.926 --> 01:20:55.405
Well, we will talk about that next week on episode 157 So make sure you guys come back for that but until then from Aaron and I and botter Thank you so much for listening to the oblivion bar podcast.
